River Landing Golf Association for Ladies (RLGALS) held its annual “Swing for the Cure” helicopter golf ball drop and golf tournament & luncheon on October 21st and 22nd. In the past, the two-day event has raised money for the RLGALS Endowment Fund for Breast Cancer Research, managed by UNC Lineberger. This year, at the request of several members, Pretty In Pink Foundation was added to receive a portion of the monies collected. The RLGALS Endowment Fund is used to award seed grants to promising researchers who are working to find a cure for breast cancer. Pretty in Pink Foundation (PIPF) is a North Carolina charity whose mission is to provide financial assistance to uninsured and underinsured breast cancer patients. Donations made to PIPF in Duplin County will stay in Duplin County to help those in need right here in our community.

On October 21st, The Swing for the Cure events began with the 6th annual Helicopter Ball Drop. The participants in pink gathered on the back terrace of the Clubhouse in anticipation to find out whose golf balls landed in the cup.

Mother Nature was not being very cooperative and added some extra drama to the event in the form of a thunderstorm, just in time for the scheduled ball drop. However, River Landing residents are very resilient and were not going to be denied the fun of watching the ball drop. As a result of constant communication about the approaching storm between head pro Larry George and pilot Courtney St. Pierre, the helicopter was able to take off, but a little earlier than originally planned. In dramatic fashion, the helicopter made several passes over the River Landing Clubhouse before hovering over the 14th fairway of the River Course to drop the 1,009 numbered golf balls. Three River Landing residents (1st Place - Brenda Long, 2nd Place - Terri Hayes, and 3rd Place - Cathy Harless) split half of the money raised from the raffle after their golf balls landed in the hole. The remaining raffle money was donated to The RLGALS Endowment Fund for Breast Cancer Research, and Pretty In Pink Foundation.

Due to the generosity of many Wallace businesses and the residents of River Landing, UNC Lineberger will receive $7,756 and Pretty In Pink will receive $3,895.

The RLGALS are very grateful to local businesses -- Bill Carone’s GMC, Chevrolet and Buick Dealership, the Pizza Corner, Smith Brothers Gas Company, and River Landing residents Rich and Keri Phaneuf, for donating the money needed to fund the helicopter.

The law firm of Hunter & Price, P.A. in Kenansville gave all golf attendees a customized Swing for the Cure golf towel. Pretty In Pink also gave golfers a golf towel and Lori’s Golf Shoppe in Calabash, NC gave a bag of tees, discount card, and a gift basket.

Along with the golf, there were multiple other prizes being awarded throughout the event. Along with many miscellaneous raffle prizes, Debra Makins won the Closest to the Pin on hole #8, while Elaine Frater took the win for Closest to the Pin on hole #16. Martha Edgerton was the Closest to the Line winner on #17. We would also like to announce that the Limited Edition Pink Bubba Watson Driver was won by our very own Jack Carver!

In addition to the golf prizes, there were numerous door prizes donated by residents and many Wilmington businesses. Jennifer Bowman from UNC Lineberger played in the golf tournament and attended the luncheon. Jennifer thanked everyone for their donations and ongoing support for breast cancer research. Joy Wade and Shelley Lesniewicz from PIPF attended the luncheon and thanked everyone for including PIPF this year.

Thanks to the generosity of too many to count, the RLGALS’ Swing for the Cure fundraisers have donated $88,105 to UNC Lineberger from 2008 to 2016.

The RLGALS look forward to another successful Swing event next October 20-21. Please mark your calendars. The Swing for the Cure golf tournament is open to all women in River Landing, as well as their family and guests. Non-golfers can donate to the charities and join in the fun by signing up for the luncheon.

In addition to the purchase of golf ball drop raffle tickets, another way to donate to UNC and Pretty In Pink was to sponsor a hole at the golf tournament. Many River Landing residents, their families and friends, and Wallace businesses did so in the name of loved ones who fought or continue to wage the fight. Ken Santarelli, Program Director and Operations Manager for WEGG-Surge Radio 100.5 FM & 710 AM, generously sponsored seven holes at the tournament. Other businesses which sponsored holes were: Blueberry Farms; Cavenaugh’s Gifts; James Cavender, CPA; Duplin Winery; Falyn’s Boutique; Farrior’s Flooring & Interiors; Glass Slipper Boutique; Johnson Realty; K.R. Cavenaugh Electric; Olive Branch Gardens; Revive Physical Therapy/Pigford’s PT; the Purple Thistle; Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home; Rose Hill Restaurant; Southland Dental Care; and Whitewood Management Associates. Gotcha Signs and Designs graciously donated the sponsor signs for the event.

Giving Back...River Landing Supports Wallace-Rose Hill Friends of the Arts

In 2004, River Landing residents Charlie and Pat Schaeffer, Jack and Jan Zoesch, Graham and Sandra Phillips, along with area locals Clint and Mary Ayres, met with Principal M.D. Guthrie at the Wallace-Rose Hill High School. Together, they formed the Wallace - Rose Hill Friends of the Arts to promote local cultural growth and awareness of the arts. The Friends of the Arts brings fine arts programs to area schools and the entire community, donating any surplus proceeds from funds raised to the school system’s Art and Music programs. It’s a passion that many River Landing residents continue to support to this day.

FOA has established close working relationships with the principals and faculty at participating schools, and these educators are extensively involved in program planning and execution. Performances are held in the 752-seat Fine Arts Center at the Wallace-Rose Hill High School located in Teachey, North Carolina, as well as in the local Wallace and Rose Hill Elementary Schools.

FOA schedules outstanding performances for all students, kindergarten through high school. Performing artists often visit the classrooms and work with the students on such things as song writing, storytelling and playing various musical instruments.

The community can be proud that River Landing and area residents, as well as local business and corporate leaders, have together contributed more than a quarter of a million dollars to the Friends of the Arts. Each year a major fundraiser is held at the River Landing Clubhouse to help in that effort. Funds raised help provide education, artistic, and creative growth for our local youth, opening their eyes and minds to a wider world of opportunity. So far, 68,500 students have attended 302 performances, all free to the students, thanks to the donations you and your neighbors have made to the Friends of the Arts. Less than five percent of the funds raised have gone to administrative costs and fundraising.

This school year, the students will be entertained and educated by Moscow Nights and Golden Gates (the students perform with the instrumentalists), Chinese acrobats, a storyteller musician, a violinist workshop, and the Anderson Brothers jazz trio, plus others to be scheduled. And on December 4th at 7:30 pm at the First Baptist Church in Wallace, the Christmas portion of The Messiah will be presented for the entire community. You’re invited to enjoy this wonderful performance, and help show your support of the arts!

Special Thanks: -Rich and Mary Beth Peters for arranging free freight from Wallace to Rainelle. -Colette/Island Creek Landscaping for providing the labor to load the books here in River Landing. -Don and Robin Cmar for the use of their garage for staging and sorting of the books in the past 3 months.

Thank YouOnce again the River Landing Community stepped up--in conjunction with the Town of Wallace, Duplin County and other surrounding counties’ libraries, we were able to deliver 395 boxes (approximately 12,000 books) on Wednesday, October 26th to the Rainelle, WV Library! The library staff and the residents of Rainelle were totally overwhelmed! They are in the midst of recovering from the 5 feet of water that ripped thru the main street of Rainelle.

It’s examples like this that make River Landing so special!!

A beautiful weekend greeted the 32 player field as they competed on both the River Course and the Landing Course. The annual 36-hole competition establishes the best players in their age bracket, both gross and net, as well as the desirable name on the trophy recognizing the 2016 Champions. By way of a live scoreboard following the leaders, it was apparent the competitors knew where they stood in their flight and it certainly seemed to elevate the winners. The gallery reacted appropriately with applause at the numerous birdies and great shots which were observed. Our hope as the championship increases in popularity is not necessarily the field growing (which we would prefer) but the gallery growing. We thank all who participated; it takes a great deal to compete in an individual competition putting yourself on a stage to perform with others, sometimes peers watching. Congratulations to our winners:

Holes-n-One

Congratulations to Dick White (no this isn’t a typo)! I believe he has 5 now with 4 here at River Landing. On 10/2/16 he used his trusty 6-iron (as a single-digit handicap he trusts all his clubs) on

#11L to navigate the 157 yards to reach the bottom of the hole in 1 singular shot. Mr. White, please don’t forget, you owe the pro a cocktail!

Golf Cart Pairing Up – Are you one of the many groups who need 3 carts for 3 or 4 players? Please pair up when leaving the 1st Tee and make sure there are 2 riders in each cart. It is careless and adds age to our cart fleet if you don’t!

Golf Shop Vendors – Please know that just because you don’t see it in the golf shop doesn’t mean we can’t order it! We can compete and usually offer a better price on new products than most golf stores. Please ask a member of the golf staff for a price if you don’t see it in the golf shop.

Golf Course Cart Towels – Please, Please, Please return any cart towels you may have accidentally taken home or left in your vehicle.

Safety First – Please wait for the golfers ahead of you to clear the landing area before you hit your next shot. It only takes one errant shot to change our community. Are you really impatient enough to jeopardize someone’s life? If you are, think about someone doing the same thing to your spouse, child or best friend. It’s just a game!

Practice Range Mats – When the balls are set to hit on the range mats, please only hit on the mats. They are intended to protect and prolong the natural grass tee for all golfers.

Cigarette Butts & Trash – Please keep River Landing Green & Clean “No butts about it!”We would like to inform all smokers that we do have ashtrays for golf carts so please ask the staff for one and help us keep our golf courses free of butts!!!

Decorative Grasses – Please do not drive golf carts or push carts through the decorative grasses. There should never be any vehicles in the grass. This will not be tolerated.

Back Driving Range - Please keep golf cart traffic limited to the cart path or beside the south practice tee. Our maintenance staff is trying to improve and beautify our practice area and the traffic elimination will help substantially.

Wild and Wet but we have no regret. We finished September and began October expecting our normal play days mixed in with Hot Dog Day and our Fall Classic Tournament. Well, we were fooled! We had our Hot Dog and Beer Day on Tuesday 9-20-16 with 53 players sharing dogs, beer, and stories of the shot they made. Okay, things were moving forward until we got rained out on September 29th, but the sun returned and we resumed our Play Days the next week. Then Hurricane Matthew arrived and he teed off on both courses and then some. What amazed all was how the River Landing Pro Shop and Golf Course Maintenance Staff worked to get us back in the swing of things. We had to move our away trip to Bear Trail to October 25th, but we still pulled off our Fall Classic on October 15th. Kudos to all. Coming up will be our Closing Day Tournament on November 5th and a special Post Season Tournament on November 19th. The following pictures show that RLMGA keeps on swinging even when Mother Nature challenges us.

It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge another passing of one of our own, Jack Zoesch. Jack enjoyed playing golf, especially with his family. He was an RLMGA member who always seemed to be hitting that perfect shot. As we play #13 on the Landing we will turn to the right of the fairway and tip our caps to you. Well done Jack, you are missed.

The pantry provides non-perishable food for underprivileged families in Duplin County. Most of the recipients live in Wallace, Rose Hill, and Teachey.

As part of our 20th Anniversary, River Landing wants to make the 2016 Holiday Season unforgettable! To celebrate, we have created our “12 Days of Christmas” just for you! Throughout the month of December we will hold a series of 12 events to get you in the holiday spirit. Be sure to mark these dates on your calendar so you don’t miss any of these festive experiences. We hope you will join us at each of these events as we say thanks to you for making our River Landing community so special. More details about each date will be provided as the Holiday Season approaches. Take a look on the next page for our “12 Days of Christmas Calendar”
