Welcome to Coastal Virginia! Whether you are staying on the Southside (Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, Chesapeake), the Peninsula (Hampton, Newport News, Williamsburg), Smithfield, Suffolk or the Eastern Shore of Virginia, you are in the birthplace of the U.S. of A.
Coastal Virginia is a history buff’s paradise. Native American communities resided here for generations before the “First Landing” of European settlers just 400 years ago. Throughout time, the people of the region have played a significant role in the advancement of trade, technology, exploration, civil and human rights, medicine, business, education and culture. And, the future of this region is even more exciting than the past.
Located in the heart of the Mid-Atlantic, one of the most notable characteristics of the area is the abundance of water. In fact, the region takes its name from local waterways. From the U.S. Navy, the shipbuilding and repair industries, to international marine transportation, leisure cruising and the Port of Virginia, the area thrives on the Atlantic Ocean, Chesapeake Bay and many natural harbors and rivers.
Our purpose in developing this publication is to give the reader a sense of the area they are visiting. The stories on the best places to eat, to shop, to visit as well as living here and local history are contributed by people that live and work in the region. We hope their stories enhance your stay.
We truly hope you enjoy your stay in Coastal Virginia. Additionally, we hope www.LandmarksGreatDeals.com will help you to save money on dining, shopping, and attractions during your stay or for future visits. Please mention this book when you visit our sponsors, without whom this book would not be possible.

Landmarks of Coastal Virginia 7
Coastal Virginia, also known as Hampton Roads, covers cities
in the southeastern region of Virginia and its lifestyle offers as
much diversity as the origin of its original name. Taken from
the 17th century English Earl of Southampton, Henry Wriothesley and
the nautical term road, the name Hampton Roads offers residents and
visitors everything from 29 miles of Atlantic Ocean beaches to historic
early American culture. Whether you are here to work, play, or live the
area offers options to suit any lifestyle at any stage of life.
Home to over 1.6 million people, and host to many Colleges and
Universities, Coastal Virginia encompasses the Southside cities of
Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Virginia Beach while
the Peninsula includes, Hampton and Newport News, Williamsburg,
Yorktown and the counties of Gloucester, Isle of Wight, James City,
Mathews, Southampton, Surry and York, and Currituck in North Carolina.
The Southside Norfolk: Located where the Chesapeake Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean, the 400-year old port city of Norfolk offers beauty, arts and entertainment, great healthcare, and the opportunity to stretch your wings and enjoy all that being alive truly means.
Home to the world’s largest naval installation and a major commercial port for centuries, Norfolk is international in its scope and its vision. Travel is easy with Norfolk International Airport offering 200 flights daily, including connections to major hubs. Interstates make driving to and from Norfolk hassle-free.
Norfolk features numerous restaurant and theater districts, waterfront dancing and dining, and upscale shopping. A “walkable” city, with attractions, shopping and restaurants only steps from major hotels; a destination for cruise, history and art lovers; and home to the U.S. Atlantic Fleet; Norfolk offers southern charm and
city nightlife in a peaceful waterfront setting.
Virginia Beach: Hampton Roads boasts more than 29 miles of beaches, Virginia Beach being the most infamous 14 miles. A year round destination, Virginia Beach is rich in history, culture, and natural beauty.
Located at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, Virginia Beach is a bustling recreational port that supports a booming economy and is called home by nearly half a million people. With over 150 farms, a strong construction and real estate market and being a hot spot for Convention and Trade shows, Virginia Beach is also well known for its military presence.
Of course, when it comes down to it, Virginia Beach is all about “the beach.” This beautiful city offers the perfect backdrop to simply slow down, relax, and take in the breathtaking Atlantic Ocean vistas.
8 Landmarks of Coastal Virginia
Portsmouth: Portsmouth offers the best of both worlds. It is home to the second busiest port on the east coast so you might be surprised to find tree lined streets that lead toward a scenic downtown. Its central location affords residents and visitors the luxury of taking advantage of all the amenities the region has to offer.
Comprised of six historic districts, Portsmouth is an enclave of fine dining, antiques and specialty shopping, not to mention an abundance of outdoor activities. Rooted in three decades of history, there is so much to discover and uncover. Take your time or a lifetime to enjoy Portsmouth.
Suffolk: Conveniently situated as the “Gateway to Coastal Virginia,” Suffolk is within easy driving distance of the beaches & most historic Virginia Treasures…
One of the fastest growing cities in Virginia, Suffolk is known for it’s small town charm, revitalized Historic District & it’s Southern Hospitality.
Home of Planter’s Peanuts and the birthplace of Mr. Peanut, Suffolk boasts an array of activities & attractions. The Great Dismal Swamp, which isn’t dismal at all, is a 112,000 acre Wildlife Sanctuary favored for it’s eco-tourism, guided tours, nature trails & bird-watching.
The up & coming Arts & Culture scene has developed into the perfect blend of local, regional & national artisans through visual arts, theatre, dance, music & much much more.
With 5 golf courses, boating, fishing & kayaking, boutique shopping, relaxing spas & unique eateries. Suffolk truly offers something for everyone!
PeninsulaHampton: Located on the picturesque shores of the Chesapeake Bay, Hampton prides itself on being one of the most unique cities in the Mid-Atlantic region. Unparalleled in its deep-rooted American history and rich maritime tradition, Hampton continues to maintain old-fashioned charm without sacrificing essential urban amenities.
Known as America’s first city, Hampton is now home to nearly 150,000 people and attracts over 650,000 visitors annually as well as 14,000 college students. Whether you attend school, live, work, or are spending the day or the weekend you are sure to find it both charming and enchanting.
Newport News: Newport News invites you to discover the future. On the north side of Hampton Roads Harbor where the Chesapeake Bay meets the
James River, the City of Newport News is recognized for its advanced research and technology resources.
The city’s historic sites, museums and recreational facilities foster a superb quality of life and offer visitors a fun-filled adventure. The region’s important military ties are captured at two of the city’s museums, the U.S. Army Transportation Museum at Fort Eustis and the Virginia War Museum.
Hampton Roads is the birthplace of Colonial America. It is home to Jamestown, Yorktown, and to Colonial Williamsburg. The melding of history, maritime commerce, and beautiful waterfront landscapes come together with bustling and quaint communities, healthy economic prosperity, and its ever prominent military presence to offer residents and visitors alike a beautiful place to discover for a day or a lifetime.

“Could have stayed all day! We went there recently and
could have stayed all day. It’s full of super fun things for kids
of all ages and VERY clean.”
Great Dismal Swamp“Well, it doesn’t really live up to its name, does it?” A common
sentiment from visitors, The Great Dismal Swamp National
Wildlife Refuge is hardly dismal. The refuge encompasses over
112,000 acres of forested wetland in southeastern Virginia and
northeastern North Carolina. Early European settlers referred
to swamps as “dismals,” and considered them fearful places
filled with wild beasties and poisonous fogs. Colonel William
Byrd II is generally credited for giving the swamp its name
when he led a land survey crew through in early 1728.

Landmarks of Coastal Virginia 15
With three distinct beach experiences,
pristine natural wonders, a vibrant
downtown district, fresh coastal
cuisine and a variety of year-round
festivals, it’s not surprising that Virginia
Beach has been consistently ranked
among the country’s best beach
destinations.
From the Atlantic Ocean to the
Chesapeake Bay, Virginia Beach
offers unique coastal experiences that
are nothing short of extraordinary –
that’s living the life! At the Resort area,
from First to 40th Streets, visitors can
enjoy a stroll along the iconic three-
mile oceanfront boardwalk. The area
features a fishing pier, an active
inlet and plenty of opportunities for
biking, boating, kayaking, jet-skiing,
parasailing and stand-up paddle
boarding. Locally-owned restaurants
and nightlife range from coastal
cosmopolitan to crab-and-oyster
shacks. King Neptune - a 34-foot-tall
cast bronze statue of the mythological
sea god—is a must-stop spot for a
family selfie at 31st Street and Atlantic
Avenue.
Visitors seeking a more relaxed
day at the beach will enjoy a visit to
Chesapeake Beach, known to locals
as “Chick’s Beach” and preferred
for its tranquility along the scenic
Chesapeake Bay. The area is also
home to a marina, as well as multiple
dockside seafood restaurants
and incredible sunset views over
Lynnhaven Inlet. Many restaurants
encourage guests to pull up their
boats to their docks, making for a
distinct Virginia Beach experience.
For a more secluded environment, the
Sandbridge area on Virginia Beach’s
southern shore is just 20 minutes away
from the main resort area, nestled up
against the Back Bay National Wildlife
Refuge. With no hotels, visitors can
enjoy breathtaking ocean-view rental
homes, condominiums and sheer
serenity in Sandbridge, where area
outfitters offer everything from bikes
and paddleboards to surfboards and
kayaks. Park the car, hop on the bike,
get to know the neighbors and plan
to meet for a beachy drink at the local
restaurants.
In addition to 35 miles of beaches,
Virginia Beach – which has been
consistently named one of “America’s
Fittest Cities” – boasts an abundance
of parks, trails, waterways and wildlife,
beckoning the outdoor adventurer.
Kayak with dolphins, paddle-board
though a wildlife reserve, or learn to
SUP and “hang 10.” Landlubbers will
love exploring First Landing State
Park or hiking through the Back Bay
National Wildlife Refuge.
Virginia Beach’s marine life also
beckons visitors indoors to the Virginia
Aquarium & Marine Science Center,
featuring more than 800,000 gallons
of aquatic environments, as well as
harbor seals, sea turtles, rays, river
otters and even Komodo dragons.
New this year is the Adventure Park
at Virginia Aquarium, the largest aerial
park of its kind, where visitors can
experience an adventure high above
the treetops through a series of ropes
courses and zip lines.
It’s Virginia Beach’s location on the
southern tip of the Chesapeake Bay
that gives the coastal community
a seafood-centric culinary culture.
With the famously rich waters of the
bay, hundreds of inlets and miles of
farmland, Virginia Beach is the place
to go for fresh seafood and locally
harvested ingredients, which pair
perfectly with locally crafted brews –
all staples in area restaurants.
After a day of outdoor adventure,
Virginia Beach’s downtown district,
Town Center, offers a mix of shopping,
dining and entertainment options
covering nearly 20 walkable city
blocks, lined with local eateries,
brand-name retailers and upscale
boutiques. Enjoy performances by
world-renowned artists at the Sandler
Center for the Performing Arts or a
show at the Funny Bone Comedy Club
year-round.
After all of the activity, it’s time to
relax and grab some ZZZs. With
more than 12,000 hotel rooms, more
than 1,800 campsites and several
hundred vacation homes for rent—
most with ocean or bay-front views,
Virginia Beach is an accommodating
destination.

I Fly, You Fly, We All Fly at iFLY!“You will never again have to wonder what it feels like to fly because you are about to experience it first-hand.”—And so begins every flight at iFLY Virginia Beach. The first and only vertical wind tunnel in the state, iFLY Va Beach opened in January of 2015 and is quickly proving to be a velocity-fueled memory-maker for all ages and abilities.
Got a teenager who’s tough to impress? Grandparents who think they’re too old? An 8-year-old who’s up for anything? And parents who aim to please? Flying is bound to be a “high”light for everyone. iFLY Va Beach offers the most realistic skydiving simulation possible—no jumping, free falling or experience necessary.
From the moment flyers enter the state-of-the-art facility at 24th and Pacific, it’s clear this will also be a high-tech adventure. A quick glance at the flat-screens behind the front desk provides a real-time, jaw-dropping glimpse at flyers in action, and it all begins with the selection of a flight package and any desired add-on options.
All first-time flyer packages include two flights in the tunnel, professional flight gear, one-on-one assistance from an IBA-accredited instructor and personalized flight certificate. Each flight lasts 60 seconds. In comparison, the average free-fall portion of a plane-assisted skydive lasts approximately 45 to 60 seconds.
Flyers are asked to enter their information and sign the required waiver and then it’s off to the flight deck to meet the heart of the operation—a 14-foot wide, 52-foot tall, climate-controlled, recirculating-air flight chamber powered by four fans generating
1,400 horse power and capable of creating variable wind speeds in excess of 180 m.p.h.
Each group of flyers attends a training session, during which a short video is shown, hand signals are learned, flight positions are practiced and questions are answered. Is it like a roller coaster? No. Is it nauseating? No. Will I fall? No, the sensation is more like floating than falling. Will I have fun? Absolutely, it’s pure awesomeness.
From there, flyers suit-up. The iFLY Va Beach gear fits easily over clothes and is specially designed to allow instructors to guide and hold onto flyers in the tunnel. A quick photo-op in front of the iFLY Va Beach step-and-repeat, and it’s time to enter the flight chamber. Taking turns, each flyer will step from the holding area into the wind tunnel, lean into the vertical column of air and let it lift them right off their feet.
The entire process lasts approximately one hour and 15 minutes, and at iFLY Va Beach, flyers age 3 to 94 have conquered it. They’ve hosted retirement communities and wounded warriors, as well as bodyflight athletes, and accomplished civilian and military skydivers. They’ve created a venue perfect for free-falling enthusiasts and the faint-of-heart. They’ve brought a monumental experience to visitors and locals alike and are quickly proving that no beach day is complete without the “wind” beneath your “wings,” an instructor by your side and the pure joy of flight written all over your face.

Kids, teens and adults find that The Adventure Park delivers fun, excitement, challenge and memories that aren’t soon forgotten. The park is ideal for ages 5 and older and is great for families or groups of friends.
The Adventure Park is located in the woods next to the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center’s Marsh Pavilion. Walk into the forest, and you’ll see wooden platforms around trees that are connected by zip lines as well as by quirky bridges (or crossings) made of wood, cable and rope. Some of these crossings include wooden or net tunnels, suspended balance beams, trapeze bars, Tarzan ropes and even an aerial skateboard.
Harnesses and always-locked-on safety equipment are provided for a self-guided climbing and zip lining adventure. Once fitted with your equipment, you will receive a safety briefing and an opportunity to practice before taking to the trees in one of two climbing areas: the Adventure Forest and the Labyrinth.
In the Adventure Forrest, you first climb into a main tree platform where you can choose one of 13 trails that include a series of bridges and zip lines. You don’t need to be an athlete to enjoy the Adventure Forest. Our trails are rated by degree of challenge offered – sort of like runs at a skill hill. The easiest trails are suitable for 5 and 6-year-olds when accompanied by an adult. These trails are 10 to 12 feet above the ground and are marked as Purple Trails. Climbers are progressively challenged as they take on Yellow, Green, Blue, Black and Double-Black trails. Trails become higher and the demands for physical strength, agility,
stamina and balance become greater. Within the Adventure Forest, there are 170 unique bridges and 21 zip lines. Our 315-foot zip line crosses Owls Creek and offers a unique view of the estuary. Once you complete a trail, just walk back to the main tree platform to start another trail.
There are many benefits to the Adventure Forest’s system of trails, crisscrossing through the woods. Adventurous climbers don’t leave tentative climbers behind. Families and groups arriving together can continuously interact no matter which trail each member chooses. A young climber can stop to watch an older sister take on a more difficult trail. An advanced climber can pass on encouragement to his friend on an intermediate trail. Climbers can look back on sections they’ve completed and scope out trails to come. Upon completing a trail, a climber can decide to do it again using a different technique or tackle a new trail with different challenges. Many climbers leave at the end of the day thinking about trails they want to conquer during their next visit.
In addition to the Adventure Forest, the Park includes the Labyrinth that transforms a portion of the woods into what could become a premier birthday party location for kids ages 5–9. The Labyrinth is a self-contained space with crossings that are similar to those in the Adventure Forest, but built to scale for young climbers. The kids wear harnesses connected to safety lines, receive safety briefings, and play under parental supervision with park assistance. It is a place where kids can truly find their inner squirrel.
The Adventure Park is like no other attraction in Coastal Virginia. You won’t hear the clank and hum of motorized rides, or feel like you are melting on sun-scorched concrete. Come create stories you’ll swap with your friends and family whenever you gather for years to come.

in Coastal VirginiaShopping can be sport or recreation for many when traveling. Whether you are searching for an original work of art, a luxury timepiece, a new pair of shoes or something jauntily nautical, you will have a variety of options to shop ‘til you drop while visiting Coastal Virginia. In addition to tempting nationally-known stores, you will find a memorable group of exceptional locally-owned specialty shops.
On the Southside, Norfolk and Portsmouth have older neighborhoods that offer vintage appeal and walk-about browsing. Ghent, Downtown Norfolk and Olde Towne Portsmouth are great for strolling down sidewalks, window shopping and enjoying the feel of these historic cities. Also on the Southside, Virginia Beach offers many beachfront shopping options on both Atlantic and Pacific Avenues. And the Beach has many smaller shopping areas away from the oceanfront for specialized and unique bargains. You will find unusual and interesting jewelry, fine furniture and gifts galore. Be on the lookout for incredible fine art by both local and nationally known artists. Try La Promenade and Hilltop on Laskin Road or the new Town Center on Virginia Beach Blvd. for those unique and specialty shops in a newer setting as well as shops along Shore Drive.
Peninsula visitors also have an array of shopping excitement. Phoebus and the Downtown area in Hampton both offer that historic stroll and Newport News’ Port Warwick and Hilton Village show off eclectic locally owned shops.
What are some of those unique “will not find anywhere else” items? Nautical and Naval items, many found in area museum shops. The Mariners’ Museum, Nauticus, Virginia Aquarium and others search the world for those special ships, whales and educational toys that inspire memories of our historic ties to the sea.
Of course, beach and resort themes from Virginia Beach to Ocean View and Buckroe Beach are plentiful but offer more than just a t-shirt or hat. Search these areas for specialized jewelry and clothing you will not find anywhere else. Small shops have creative license to provide a unique item you’ll always cherish.
Sailing and boating gear is readily available at the many marine shops. Rudee Inlet and Shore Drive in Virginia Beach have a wide array of both motor and sail boats and accessories. Willoughby Bay in Norfolk and Downtown Hampton also cater to the recreational boater for more Chesapeake Bay activities.
If you are looking for great Mall- Shopping experiences you have a lot of great options throughout Coastal Virginia. On the Southside, MacArthur Center in Downtown Norfolk is a big mall happening in a small package. Lynnhaven Mall at the Beach has become a mecca for fashionistas. And both City Center in Newport News and Towne Center in Hampton are the newest malls to open in the market.
Find your unique experience in shopping in Coastal Virginia for yourself, your friends and family. The shopping experience and the rewards you uncover will be a treasure hunt to remember!

Health & Spasin Coastal VirginiaSpas provide a place for rest, relaxation, and a chance to de-stress. The Coastal Virgina beaches offer a number of tranquil Day Spas. Make your visit extraordinary and escape to an oasis of relaxation! Vacations are the perfect time to make time to nurture your body and soul with some much needed self care.
Whether you are looking for a rejuvenating massage, a soothing facial, a detoxifying body treatment or an indulgent manicure and pedicure you will be sure to find what you need on the spa menu. Nearly all spas have custom day spa packages so consider devoting several hours to some much needed pampering.
One of the most popular spa services is Therapeutic Massage. Massage not only feels incredible – it’s good for you too! Massage helps reduce stress and alleviate muscle tension. There are so many different kinds of massages to choose from! When in doubt, a basic Swedish relaxation massage is a good choice for anyone who has never experienced massage therapy. Massage aficionados may prefer a deep tissue massage to work out specific areas of muscle tension or a reflexology treatment which can address problem areas in the entire body from working out corresponding points on the feet.
Facials are a wonderful spa service designed to keep you looking your best.
They can be customized to address a variety of skin care concerns including acne, fine lines and wrinkles, hyper pigmentation, and Rosacea just to name a few. Facials are divinely relaxing and a great way to keep your skin looking fantastic. Microdermabrasian and LED Light Therapy are some additional anti-aging skin care services that many spas offer. More aggressive skin care treatments can be found at day spas that provide medical aesthetic services such as Laser treatments and Botox. With such a great variety of options, you should be able to find a skin care service that meets your needs. Body treatments are skin care services that provide rejuvenation from head to toe. Detoxifying body wraps and exfoliating body scrubs will leave your whole body amazingly soft, smooth, and energized.
Although fun in the sun is part of any great beach vacation, too much sun can lead to premature aging and major health concerns. Spray tanning has become a popular alternative with health conscious spa goers. Spray tan services can help you achieve a healthy beach glow without submitting yourself to the sun’s damaging rays. Spa manicures and pedicures are an experience in indulgence with special pampering for hands and feet. A trip to the spa may be just what you are looking for on your next visit to the beach. With so much to offer, the Coastal Virgina day spas provide the perfect beach escape and may prove to be the highlight of your beach vacation.

Aberdeen Barn Steak House
Family owned and operated by the Pramada family, the Aberdeen Barn Steak House has been serving locals and visitors to the Virginia Beach area for over 29 years. Originally founded in 1966 and purchased by Gus and Tasia in 1987, this premier steak house is now a local favorite as the tradition continues with their two sons, Yanni and Demetri, with their long term partner Panikos. Several of their signature steaks, such as the Cowboy Cut Delmonico, 18 ounces of premium aged Black A ngus, are served on a sizzling hot plate with a fresh vegetable, baked potato and homemade bread. The Barn serves the best slow cooked roast prime rib in coastal Virginia with au jus, horseradish, and your choice of sides.
The Aberdeen Barn uses Stockyard Angus Premium Beef. Stockyard Angus Premium Beef has a reputation for the highest standard of quality. It is government certified by the USDA/CFIA for its superior marbling, giving the beef its rich flavor and juiciness. Each cut of Stockyard Angus Beef is aged, carefully trimmed, and prepared to mouth-watering perfection for a truly memorable dining experience.
Yet this steak house is not just known for their steak. With seafood favorites like the Fried Oysters Rockefeller, Captain Yanni’s raw bar selection or the Ultimate Seafood Platter, you will never leave there hungry!

Inside Nauticus, exhibit highlights include Our Mighty Seaport, an exhibit exploring maritime commerce; Guns, Sweat, and Gears: Anatomy of a Battleship, with its enormous gun devices, tools, and personal mementos from the Battleship Wisconsin; and Stewards of the Sea: Defending Freedom, Protecting the Environment, a 1,000-square-foot, highly interactive exhibit which highlights how the Navy protects marine life while fulfilling its mission. Stewards of the Sea was developed by the Hampton Roads Naval Museum and U.S. Fleet Forces Command.
The Nauticus Theater shows 3D films daily. Outside the theater, you can step inside the Clelia, an underwater
exploration submersible, and control an actual 9-foot long robotic arm to collect samples and artifacts from the seabed. Educators are always on hand to help you create an ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle), and test it out in a giant tank of water.

It’s all at the Virginia Living Museum, Newport News, where living exhibits depict Virginia’s natural heritage from the mountains to the sea.
The museum introduces visitors to more than 250 living species native to Virginia (including 10 that are listed as endangered or threatened) through exhibits, discovery centers and interactive hands-on exhibits.
Opened in 1987 as the first living museum east of the Mississippi, the Virginia Living Museum is still a museum leader in its use of living exhibits (animals, plants, marine creatures, reptiles, amphibians, birds) to present its message—connecting people to nature through educational experiences that promote conservation.
Each exhibit tells a story. There is the predator-prey relationship between the chipmunk and the corn snake; the camouflage abilities of the flounder, the invasive, but beautiful lionfish, and the complex interrelationships of the animals and plants that inhabit a cypress swamp.
Transport yourself to the steamy world of a cypress swamp, complete with an alligator. Find songbirds nestled in the trees around a cascading mountain waterfall and view trout in a cool mountain stream. Explore the underwater world of the Chesapeake Bay and the underground realm of a limestone cave. See flying squirrels, stingrays and other creatures of the night. in Coastal VirginiaPerforming and fine arts thrive throughout Coastal Virginia. It is one of the hallmarks of the region where museums, artists, and performers flourish in this multi-cultural setting with both historic and innovative settings.
The downtown area of Norfolk is considered by many to be the heart of the arts in Coastal Virginia. The renovated Harrison Opera House, home to the Virginia Opera, is right next to the Chrysler Museum of Art, renowned for it’s world-class collection of more than 30,000 objects, including one of the most impressive glass collections in America. The Museum presents special exhibitions, events and educational programming that bring the art to life for visitors. For a complete schedule of exhibitions and events, visit www.chrysler.org.
The Hermitage Museum & Gardens, formerly home to the Sloane family, is an early 20th century Arts-and-Crafts estate located on the shore of the Lafayette River in Norfolk, Virginia. Featuring a nationally recognized art collection spanning 5,000 years, the Hermitage is home to the arts. Contemporary exhibition galleries, a Visual Arts Studio, working artist studios, and 12 acres of gardens and grounds offer art and culture to the community, as envisioned by the Sloanes.
The Wells Theater, home to Virginia Stage Company and professional theater in Hampton Roads, and the d’Art Center where you can watch as artists develop their creations are nearby.
Virginia Beach has added many wonderful venues for both performing and fine arts. The breathtaking new Sandler Center for the Performing Arts offers flawless acoustics and a state-of-the-art comfortable interior that work together to create an intimate atmosphere allowing you to experience each performance to the fullest.
The Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art is a non-profit institution which exists to foster awareness, exploration, and understanding of the significant art of our time. Regularly changing exhibitions feature painting, sculpture, photography, glass, video and other visual media from internationally acclaimed artists as well as artists of national and regional renown. By balancing its four primary activities—gallery exhibitions, studio art classes, educational outreach programs and outdoor art shows—MOCA seeks to involve a diverse regional public in the rich and active language of contemporary visual art.
When artist Richard Stravitz purchased and renovated a building on Laskin Road for a place to show and sell his bronze sculpture in 2008, he took the approach of a businessman.
He hired key people to run the gallery and brought in a variety of artists with strong followings. He ensured that Richard Stravitz Sculpture and Fine Art Gallery, with its large windows fronting the highly traveled Oceanfront corridor, attracted attention.
Hampton has also become a center for arts with a variety of old and restored venues. The American Theater, a refurbished landmark with an intimate setting, promotes a variety of performances in Phoebus while the Charles H. Taylor Arts Center, a former public library, hosts changing exhibitions.
So no matter where you go along Virginia’s coastal territories, you will always find yourself immersed in some form of arts and culture.

EXPLORE HERMITAGE MUSEUM & GARDENSThe Hermitage Museum & Gardens, formerly home to the Sloane family, is an early 20th century Arts-and-Crafts estate located on the shore of the Lafayette River in Norfolk, Virginia. Featuring a nationally recognized art collection spanning 5,000 years, contem-porary exhibition galleries, a Visual Arts Studio, and twelve acres of gardens and grounds, the Hermitage offers art and culture to the community as envisioned by the Sloanes.
Guests are invited to tour the museum, where 5,000 years of art harmoniously blends with the hand carved oak, walnut, and teak interiors of the galleries. The Sloanes had broad artistic interests and were educated collectors. They were instrumental in the founding of the Norfolk Museum of Arts and Sciences, now the Chrysler Museum.
Objects in the collection range from archaic Chinese bronzes to Spanish religious icons, European furniture, as well as American paintings and sculptures. Two changing galleries host rotating exhibits throughout the year including works by contemporary artists, local arts groups, and pieces in the Sloane Collection that are not on permanent display.
Guided tours of the museum are offered daily by knowledgeable docent staff. Self-guided tours are also available to visitors who would prefer to browse the home and collection on their own.
The Hermitage is also known for its beautiful grounds, which include semi-formal gardens, forest, and wetlands. The property is bordered on three sides by the Lafayette River, a tributary of the tidal estuary that threads through Hampton Roads. Both the wetlands and woodlands provide a natural habitat for hundreds of plants and animals, including a variety of waterfowl and migrating birds. The gardens feature 105 millstones, many of which reside in the Millstone Courtyard that greets visitors at the museum en-trance. Along the south side of the house is a colorful English-style perennial border coupled with a pathway leading into the water-front lawn. A large southern magnolia tree stands on the east lawn overlooking a stone terrace highlighted by Edward McCartan’s bronze fountain, Girl Drinking From a Shell.

“Well, it doesn’t really live up to its name, does it?” A
common sentiment from visitors, The Great Dismal
Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is hardly dismal. The
refuge encompasses over 112,000 acres of forested
wetland in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North
Carolina. Early European settlers referred to swamps as
“dismals,” and considered them fearful places filled with
wild beasties and poisonous fogs. Colonel William Byrd
II is generally credited for giving the swamp its name
when he led a land survey crew through in early 1728
to establish the boundary between Virginia and North
Carolina. While the plentiful trails today provide easy
walking and biking through the Refuge, it isn’t too hard to
imagine how hacking through dense vegetation and wet
muck for months might leave a suboptimal impression
on the surveyors.
Despite its imposing name, the Great Dismal Swamp
National Wildlife Refuge is full of beautiful scenery,
ample hiking, cycling, birding, and wildlife observation
opportunities, allows for fishing, boating, and hunting, and
played an important role in the Underground Railroad.
Hike or bike (mountain bikes or hybrids are recommended)
some of the 60+ miles of trails along narrow canals
formerly used for transporting lumber, or walk one of the
boardwalk trails that meander through cypress and gum
trees. Drive the auto tour and view the unique landscape
of the 3,000-acre Lake Drummond, one of only two
naturally-formed lakes in Virginia. Paddle among ancient
cypress along the lakeshore and through overhanging
boughs along the Feeder Ditch from Dismal Swamp
Canal. Bring a pair of binoculars to test your birding
knowledge and be on the lookout for larger wildlife—the
Great Dismal Swamp is home to many animals including
snakes, otters, a multitude of white tail deer, and one of
the largest black bear populations on the east coast.
Learn about its role in history as George Washington’s
Dismal Swamp Land Company and as home to maroon
colonies of escaped slaves.
The Refuge provides the unique opportunity of operating
the largest public hunt the Tidewater region. About
75,000 acres are open in Virginia and North Carolina
to deer hunters for six weekends in October through
November, and 20,000 acres are open to bear hunters in
mid to late November. In addition to their state licenses,
all hunters must apply for a refuge hunt permit via the
Virginia Game Department. While all hunters applying for
a deer permit will receive one, the bear hunt is a lottery
and only 50 applicants will receive permits. Contact the
refuge headquarters for more information.
