High Season is Here!

The heat of summer is finally beginning to dissipate around the U.S. and many of us are making our preparations for a fall or winter trip to Club Land’or and the welcoming climate of the Bahamas. The islands continue to be a major tourist destination for Americans and Europeans alike; the proximity to the United States and the cultural ties to The United Kingdom may draw first time visitors, but a large number of them continue to return year after year. At Club Land’or, we continue our uninterrupted tradition of providing a safe, family-friendly experience in the heart of Paradise. Our members and guests are warmly greeted by our loyal, efficient staff who, if they don’t know your name on Friday, will remember you every day thereafter and on through the years. Now is the time to make your plans to return to Paradise and the warm hospitality of Club Land’or!

Welcome to the Land’or Family! National Heroes Day

October 12 has traditionally

been celebrated in The

Bahamas as Columbus Day/

Discovery Day. The day

commemorates the landing

of Christopher Columbus’

famous first landing in the

“New World” at San Salvador

in The Bahamas in 1492. He

claimed the area for Spain (to

the unknowing doom of the

local peaceful Arawaks) and

history took it’s course. In

2013 the holiday was

renamed Heroes’ Day to

honor the contributions of

Bahamian soldiers, patriots,

educators, poets and others

to the culture of the island

nation.

The Blue Lagoon Restaurant Tradition Continues

“My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary at Blue Lagoon. We

ordered escargot as an appetizer. It was my first time trying the dish, but let

me tell you, the taste was AMAZING!!! I loved it! This dish melted in my

mouth. I was impressed by the flavor of this dish, as well as the dishes that

followed (my husband had the seafood platter and I enjoyed the grouper).

The staff is welcoming and friendly and very efficient. I will definitely dine

there again. Loved it! “

“Blue Lagoon Restaurant at Club Land'Or is one of the best restaurants on

Paradise Island. The food is of the best quality and always consistant. My

favorite dish is Lobster Thermador......excellently prepared. “

A Primer in Bahamian Music Culture

The Caribbean is steeped in many varieties of music, the most celebrated of which is reggae. The most novice

listener is familiar with Jamaican Bob Marley and his distinctive island sound but the sounds of the Caribbean

vary vastly from region to region, island to island. But did you know that The Bahamas is known musically for

more than “Funky Nassau” and “Who Let The Dogs Out”? Anyone who has visited Club Land’or has seen a

Junkanoo parade or is at least familiar with the sound of

horns, cowbells, drums and whistles. Another popular sound

made popular by Harry Belafonte is calypso (think “Banana

Boat, Day-o” and steel drums). A truly traditional island

sound is rake n scrape, an early form of musical expression

that uses a saw as the primary instrument; a knife blade is

scraped across the saw’s teeth to the accompaniment of

Goombay drums, guitars and other instruments. A musical variety that is sweeping the Caribbean is soca,

dance music that evolved from calypso and can be heard during the new Bahamian Carnival that takes place in

the summer. Due to its reputation as “the sound track of the islands”, steelpan music can be heard in Nassau

as well. No matter where you go in Nassau or Paradise Island, music plays a huge part in the island experience;

it’s an outward expression of the joy of living in such an idyllic setting. If you want to prep yourself for your

upcoming Club Land’or visit, grab a copy of “The Godfather of Bahamian Music “ Ronnie Butler’s “Pretty Brown

Eyes”, sit back and envision the soft breezes and frozen drinks that are soon coming your way!

Working Out In Paradise

Just because you are on vacation in one of the most relaxing yet vibrant spots in the Caribbean doesn’t mean you need to forego your exercise regimen. Paradise Island offers a long sidewalk going east (just make a left from the Club Land’or property) that will take you past the Cloisters. You may also enjoy an early morning walk on world-famous Cabbage Beach, located just minutes from the resort. If you’re up for a challenge, hike the bridges that connect PI to Nassau. You’ll want to pause at the top for spectacular views of the harbor, Nassau and the colorful cruise ships docked at Prince George Wharf!
