Calculationsofnewsolar,waterandairqualitytech-niquesdemonstratehowSouthKingstownHighSchoolcanbemoresustainableandwhatnativevegetationcanbeused.

The PLAN

Concentratingonthethemeofartandenvironment,thismas-terplanforlocalSouthKingstownHighSchool(SKHS)integratesartintotheschoolgroundsandpromotesasustainableenvironmentforlearning,recreationandbeauty.ReducingthecarbonfootprintofSKHSwithplantingsandutilizingsolarpowerwillhelpSKstepforwardwithasustainablecampus.Controllingstormwaterrunoffthroughnaturalmethodssuchasswalesanddryriverbedswillcreatespacesforlearningandartisticinterpretation.

Moundedamphitheaterwithtallnativemeadowgrass.Itprovidesaplacefortheater,graduation,outdoorclassesandgamespectating.

Alargevegetablegardenforstudentstolearnaboutagricultureandgrowtheirownfood.Anoutdooreatingareaisabuttingthis.

Planninga30lotdevelopmentforthis12.22acresitehadmanyconstraints.Tomaketheconfigurationcommunity-oriented,thereisa3,559foottrailthatloopsthroughoutthesitetoconnecteveryone,and4.83acresofopenspacetopromoteanactivelifestyle.Anabundanceoftreesprovideshade,windblockandaesthetics.

ThisenclosedcourtyardattheRhodeIslandDepartmentofTransportation(RIDOT)inProvi-dence,RIhadapermanentconcretepaving.Withsunanalysistheprimelocationofabove-groundel-ementswerelocated.Tocreateaflowthroughthecourtyard,withplacesforemployeestoeatlunch,sitdownandalsobesecluded;raisedstoneseatingwallsmeshedwithtallgrassandplanterstobringgreenandheightintothespacewereimplemented.OneoftheconstraintswastomaintainthefeelofRIDOTsoasidewalkandmetalsculpturewereincorporated.Partofcreatingthemetalsculpturewastohavethewaterfountaintodissipateloudcitynoises.

Livingoffofthelandwasthethemeusedforthis8.49acresiteonLaurelLane.Afamilyoffourcanproduceenoughfoodfromthevariousfruitandnuttreesandvegetablegardenforyeararoundsus-tenance.Thehouseisalowimpactdesign‘zerohouse’whichhassolarpanelsandrainwatercollection.Onlyasmallareaaroundthehousewasdisturbedtokeepthenaturalforestsystems.Nativevegetationwasstrategicallyplacedtobufferthehousefromwindandsun.Theplaystructureismadefrommoundedsoiltoprovidedifferentchal-lengesoneachside.

East Farm RINLA Headquarters

ToredesigntheRhodeIslandNurseryandLandscapeAssociation(RINLA)headquarters,reroutingthevehiculartraffictobemorepedestrianfriendlyandcreatingalargergatheringareawasanecessity.ThismadespaceforlearninganddisplayoftheprojectsatEastFarm.Thefirepitwasproposedtomaketheareausableatallhoursoftheday.TokeeptheheritageofRhodeIslandalive,naturalstoneandnativeplantingswereutilized.Alltreeswillbetaggedtocreateanarboretum.Permeablepavementandmanyplantingswereintergratedtohelpwithdrainageandrunoff.

Biscuit City Historic Mill

Datingbacktothe1800’sBiscuitCityMillwasknowntotheNarragansettIndiansastheGreatSpring;itwasalsoacottonmill.Topreservethispristinelandtheinvasivesneedtobecleanedoutandnativesplanted.LivestakingmethodswithSalix discolor andCornus sericeawillhelpsolvethedrainageproblem,stabilizethebanks,provideshadeand,filterpollution.

Goalsforthisprojectweretopromotehealthylivingbyhavingtrailsthroughthesite;tocreateanenvironmentalclassroomand,connectiontotheheritagebyprovidingsignage;tohelpthewildlifehabitatbykeepingtheexistinghealthyna-tivevegetation;and,todealwitherosion,drainage,bridgesandbenchesthroughdesignmakingBiscuitCityadestinationforcommunitymembers.

Thisprojectstartedwithaphotograph.Technicalpenswithmylarwereusedtoreplicatethephotographandthenadesignwascreatedfromthat,thisoneevolvingthroughtheconnectiontootherrowers.Zoominginandfindingaunitshapefromthedesignwerethebeginningstepstoformaplanusingonlyrightangles.

Fromtheplanamodelwascutoutofcardboard,andthenrecreatedinSketchUp.Todifferentiatebetweenpositiveandnegativespaceelevationwasused,creatingadeckarea,andalowerelevation,whichisforestedsowhenonthedeckthetreetopsarevisible.
