Pioneer and Veteran Memorial Park
Phoenix, AZCEMETERY
Everyone who visits Pioneer Cemetery does so because they are separated from something, and through that, they are connected. The physical forms of features are manifestations of separation, while the experiences emphasize connection. Whether it be connection to the history of the area, or connection to a lost loved one, this cemetery connects us by framing our shared separations.

The reflection space (left) features a symbolic gravemarker, an olive tree as a focal point, and a water feature for ambience and cooling. The stones are engraved with all the different information about those buried, providing an additional sensory (touch) experience leading to discovery. Night time lighting is inspired by artist James Turrell.
A memorial (right) along the northern exterior wall will often be the first experience for visitors and passersby. The height of corten steel panels corresponds to the final age of those buried within the cemetery. This creates a powerful visual experience when looking down the length of the wall with all its varying heights.
Grave markers (left)are placed on the same grid that continues into the rest of the existing site. Each marker is a symbol of intersection, and references the surrounding markers. Their placement reinforces connection, while the forms themselves are obviously separated.

The exhibition space pays homage to the history of the deceased as well as the city of Phoenix. All views from within the building are aligned
with a significant feature. Above, the view is aligned with the reflection space. The interior has been kept white to maintain focus on the pieces
being displayed. The physical form is consistent with connection through separation, as the above columns demonstrate.

BIRD HABITAT & OBSERVATORY
Program includes all accomodations for the American Kestrel to live healthily, as well as a low-budget viewing facility and a network of trails offering up close education opportunities for visitors. A challenge in the design process was developing a dialogue of space for the birds to live uninhibited, while providing ample viewing and education for visitors. This was solved using varying vegetation densities in conjuction with the naturally undulating topography to create distinct corridors meeting the needs of both parties.

Competition Solution
Avondale, AZTRIO
After interviewing the youth of Avondale, we took their wish list and combined it with the Youth Center’s mission goals to create Trio. We created a multi-use gathering space to be used as a community for events, arts, and sports. The triangular layout and forms correspond to the three guiding principles of the youth center: Collaborate, Identify, Grow. The shade structures and stone paving facilitate the initiation and graduation processes of the institution, and provide inspiration for those within, and joining, the community.
