TIPS FOR A STRONG ENTRY
Be con dent in your abili es. Even the smallest project can be an award winner.
Be pa ent. If plants are a key component, allow plan ngs to mature su ciently.
Be careful in your category selec on. Judges cannot switch an entry to a di erent category. Call the o ce ifyou ques on your selec on choice.
Be clear and concise in your narra ve. Convey your projects story and uniqueness. Judges o en men onthey do not have a good sense of the overall project.
Be fas dious in preparing your project for photos. Make sure the area has been recently maintained.
Be aware of the importance of good photography. Be sure that your digital camera has at least 3.2-mega-pixel capability. Let the photos embellish the story of the project. An early photo should show the totality of theproject, so judges can sense the scope. If applicable, be sure to include a before and a er photo taken from thesame vantage point. Take photos in the best light. You should usually avoid bright sunlight. If you doubt yourabili es, consider consul ng a landscape photography book, such as The Art of Garden Photography, by IanAdams, buying a tripod or hiring a professional photographer.
Be crea ve. Consider portraying your project at various mes of the day or season, or a er a rain or a watering.Wonderful focal points may warrant photos from di ering perspec ves. Try using foreground plants for framing. Some mes the angle of a shot can help. Think about climbing a ladder. Move the subject o center in the shot. Ifyou created an outdoor room, help make it look lived in. Set the table. Display candles for evening shots.
Be discrimina ng. Make your photos count. Do not waste a shot on construc on work, or a close up of aplant, if it doesnt embellish the story of your project. If submi ng in the plan ng design category, dont over-emphasize shots of hardscaping.
Be organized. Maintain an awards le in your computer, and compile items early. Take plenty of photos so you
can submit the very best. Set up a schedule to photograph your best projects at peak mes. Have your entryproof read .
Be persistent. De nitely consider resubmi ng a project that you believe warrants recogni on. Categoriessome mes change, and judging panels usually do. Perhaps be er photos or more maturity could make thedi erence .
Be proac ve. Show your entry to other designers to solicit opinions.
