DESCRIPTION

I traveled with a group of Landscape Architecture Students and their instructor to head an advertising strategy for their urban design plan of Zingonia, Italy. I was the soul representative of the advertising program participating in the workshop. I created two books, one on the process of the Landscape Architects to create the urban design plan accompanied with an advertising strategy book. I chose this work to show my adaptability in another country learning what does and doesn’t work as far as advertising communication in other cultures. It also shows my work ethic in that I had a week to research, work with a team to facilitate their project by creating a presentation to the city and finish my own campaign to present.

INTROOne professor of landscape architecture, three students of landscape architecture, one student of architecture and one advertising student traveled to northern Italy. They took their various skill sets and an ambitious goal to revive the city of Zingonia through urban design and branding. This is their story.

I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Oregon. Prior to coming to the University of Oregon, i taught at Cornell University. At Oregon, I teach large-scale open space studios, urban design and technology classes.

My research projects include a post occupancy evaluation of various new towns and master planned communities worldwide, including the garden city of Harlow, England, the master planned community of Mission Viejo, California and the new town of Zingonia, in Italy, for which he has received a grant from the Clarence Stein Institute. Over the past few years, I have been engaged in developing a new model for landscape architecture studio pedagogy based on multi-disciplinarily, collaboration, peer teaching, and the use of new information technologies to increasingly link academia to practice.

My favorite part of the trip was sharing my culture with my students. I was able to see my friends and family and immerse my students in the culture of Northern Italy. I was also so glad to get home cooked meals from my Mom.

I received my Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Washington in 2009 and am currently pursuing dual Masters degrees in Architecture and Landscape Architecture at the University of Oregon.

I think that the project evolved in a very collaborative manner and that the design team had a high level of exchange and discussion regarding the conceptualization of the design interventions for the new vision of Zingonia. For this reason, it is not possible to take individual ownership of any particular aspect of the project. We all contributed to the visioning process in very similar ways through critical discussion and inquiry.

My favorite part of the experience was the visioning process itself, not only the exchange between the team, but also the discussions with representatives from the city and the community.

I am currently pursuing a masters in landscape architecture at the University of Oregon. My previous academic training is in psychology (Cornell University, BA 2000), pharmacology & toxicology (UC Davis, MS 2006), and community & regional development (UC Davis, MS 2010). While at UC Davis, my research focused on non-motorized transportation policy and planning.

I hope to combine these different interests and focus her landscape architecture thesis on the re-conceptualization of urban public space.

My specific contributions to Salute da Zingonia include composing and organizing the vision statement and slide text, creating the zoning, circulation, and phasing diagrams, incorporating feedback from community representatives into the plan, and assisting with streetscape design intervention ideas.

I appreciated the opportunity to work collaboratively on an international design project. There is something gained through studying abroad that simply can’t be taught in school. Having the opportunity to participate in a real-world design project is of value in and of itself, but the opportunity to experience design through a different lens is priceless. Besides, there’s always good food!

I am a recent graduate of Bachelor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Oregon.

I contributed a lot of things...ideas, design suggestions and drawings, the power point, but also general support doing things when things needed to be done.

The experience of getting to work in an international office was very special. It was interesting to see how people work, their design process and theories, and seeing the differences and similarities.

The immigration and social issues included in the scope of the project were eye-opening. Immigration was an issue in Italy that I had no previous knowledge of. It was my first time dealing with such a diverse group of social class and ethnicities in a single project. Thinking about how designing a space can flourish or diminish social interaction in a city was another vital and challenging layer to our project.

I will also never forget the interactions I had with the local people--so welcoming and hospitable, and passionate about their city. Lastly, a special thanks to the school cafeteria women who cooked incredible Italian lunches for us every day.

I am 5th year BLA student, Student ASLA chapter president.

I have an interest in urban design and public spaces I helped coordinate the plan for Salute Zingonia. Placing buildings, spaces and infrastructure in accordance with the schemtatic zoning plans. The Autocad base was drawn and put into photoshop where detailed zones and the plan as a whole were rendered to give them a realistic appearance.

Later in the summer I constructed a computer model of the plan to give it a 3rd and crucial dimension to add a level of realism to the project as a whole.

My favorite part of the experience was getting to know the real Italy, the one tourists will never see.

I am going into my last year of the Advertising program in the School of Journalism and Communication at the University of Oregon. I have a focus on strategy and planning.

I was presented with the opportunity to join the Deni and his students on this exceptional experience and I jumped on it as I knew it would be something I just had to do. I am so glad I did.

I contributed to the project in two ways. My first task was to document the process of the Deni and the Landscape students, to show their process from start to finish. I had my camera glued to my hand and was always taking photos. I also took notes vigorously constantly observing and learning. My second task was to create a brand strategy and campaign for the city of Zingonia by using the Landscape design plan and interviews from the people of Zingonia as my base. This was an experience that pushed me to my limits, I had to apply all of my knowledge of branding and strategy to apply it to the project.

My favorite part was learning about the Italian culture, including the advertising, through the people I meet and walking through the streets. I also couldn’t help but be in awe of the personal style the people of Italy have.

Vision Statement

Salute da Zingonia aims to increase the living standard, as well as health within the community of Zingonia.

Once heightened, the three elements of health, including the economy, the environment, and social interaction will together transform Zingonia. The prospects of Salute da Zingonia will allow for the integration of Zingonia’s five surrounding towns through newfound social interactions within the city. This process will strengthen Zingonia’s social health.

Salute da Zingonia plans to enhance the area’s agriculture and green thumb. In turn, the connection between community and local ecology will magnify. This will ultimately enhance both the physical health and social health encompassing Zingonia.

Salute da Zingonia will improve the quality of all pedestrians’ experiences throughout the city. This will encourage physical activity and boost the physical health of Zingonians.

Industries in Zingonia reach beyond the city’s limits. Salute da Zingonia will support these industries and push for a stronger international economic presence.

Through a new sense of community instilled through branding, and a specific conceptual design for the area, Zingonia promises a future filled with active community-led growth.

The creative process of a Landscape Architect begins with the dissection of maps and schematics of said area. Through the use of photo walks, Architects are able to observe the landscape by foot. This allows them to get the pedestrian’s experience.

Before delving into the project, it’s also important for Landscape Architects to meet and interview those who the project will affect most in order to create useful plans.

They continue by planning and strategizing measures with their gathered observation material. Using these, they are able to develop a vision statement for their plan.

The plan consists of sections surrounding specific goals and objectives, zoning, circulation, phasing, and finally a master plan section. The plan is then further illustrated through plan details, sections and perspectives.

After presenting these ideas, Landscape Architects can get feedback and adjust to the needs of their clients. This process can be seen in the following section.

The city provided lunch for us every day at the local elementary school. We never went hungry in Italy.

Deni and the group went on a walking tour of Zingonia with Giovana and discussed the issues of the town.

Deni was interviewed by the local newspaper about the work we were doing in Zingonia.

With the help of the mayor, we were able to tour the Habilita Clinic and see the hyperbaric chamber, the only facility of its kind in the region.

Our tours continued with the tour of Bianchi and three other international companies that have their factories and base of operations in Zingonia.

We took a tour of the Largest public hospital in the region, right in Zingonia!

As we walked through Zingona we saw the diverse population due to its immigrant communities.

We went to the weekly market where vendors sold local produce and other goods to the people of Zingonia. This was a very popular event for the locals.

The group took photo walks to get a sense of the pedestrian experience and the surroundings of Zingonia.

After a lot of observation and tours, the group was ready to begin the work of creating a vision for Zingonia, while the city promoted our presentation all week long.

Many hours of planning, drawing, and producing and we had a solid presentation to give to the mayor, the city council and the people of Zingonia.

With the help of Deni as our translator each of us was able to present part of the “Salute da Zingonia” vision.
