Lane Cove West Public School
Principal’s Report
Happy Holidays to all families from the
staff at Lane Cove West Public School!
Happy Holidays
As this is the last Chatters for the year, I wanted to take
the opportunity on behalf of all the staff of our school to
wish all our families a lovely Christmas time with family
and friends, a relaxing and safe holiday break and
wishing everyone happiness and success for the 2019
year.
Staff will be returning to school on Tuesday 29 January
for our first Staff Development Day of the year with
Corwin University on ‘Building and Developing Visible
Learners’. Students Years 1-6 return on Wednesday 30
January. Students w ill return to their 2018 class
for Wednesday and Thursday 31 January so new
enrolments can be processed and allocated into 2019
classes.
Wednesday 30 January
2018 Kindergarten students will meet on the silver seats in front of OOSH where they will be met
by teachers and taken to a classroom for the two days. Years 1-5, have been allocated classrooms
as well.
The map on the following page shows classroom allocation for the first day back.
See our ‘Principal for a Day’
report on page 3!
4M is in the library with Abby.
5T will be split between 5A and 5K
We aim to have all students in their 2019 classes by Friday 1 February at the latest.
Classes 2019 – Increase in Student Numbers
On anticipated numbers to date, we expect to increase from 579 at the commencement of 2018 to
613 at the beginning of next year. This growth will impact our Kindergarten 2019 classes as we
expect to form five Kindergarten classes. As a result, we are eligible for an additional classroom
teacher position and this vacancy has been submitted to Human Resources. We anticipate to have a
new graduate appointed.
This also means that as Human Resources will fill the classroom teacher position through a central
appointment, we will be able to complete the open merit selection process for the Librarian vacancy
early in 2019.
Student Reports
Our Semester 2 assessment and reporting period is well underway with classroom teachers
working hard to assess student progress this semester. The results of these assessments will be
communicated to parents in our Semester 2 reports which will be sent home on Friday 14
December. This end-of-year report is part of the ongoing communication between parents/
caregivers and the school.
Last Wednesday Bree H got to be Principal for a Day, which was a prize won at the Spring Fair.
Adriana R was her Deputy Principal for the day as well.

Thank you to Ole Lanfear who worked with me on this project and for all her input in contacting and
following through with companies who quoted for the project.
Our Year 6 students have
voted on names for the
six koi fish that reside in
our new aquaponics
system in our Sustainable
Garden. They have been
named: Sushi, N’Chips,
Spongebob, Bubba, Basil
and Phil. Which one is
which? We need to wait
until they get a little
bigger to connect the
names to a fish!

Ethics Teachers Wanted for 2019
Primary Ethics provides the opportunity for NSW public primary
school students who don’t attend scripture classes (SRE) to
participate in philosophical ethics classes. Classes are on
Tuesdays mornings for 30 minutes and teach children how to
approach ethical issues and develop their capacity for considered
moral judgement, which will enable them to respond more
thoughtfully to many of the problems and issues they will face in
their lives.
Volunteer Ethics Teachers are trained to deliver age-appropriate curriculum every week and to use the accompanying learning and teaching materials.
For more information, please contact ethics coordinator Tim Butcher on 0413 490 328 or at [email protected]
Scholastic Literacy Pro weekly update
As a school, years 3-6 have read over 30 million words since we began
the Literacy Pro program! As of December 6, we are up to :

First Lego League State Finals On Saturday 24 November, Mrs Lee, Mr Campbell, ten robotics students and their parents had a
very early start as they set off for Wollongong to compete in the FIRST Lego League State Finals.
Competing against teams from across New South Wales, the day was a fantastic opportunity for
students to meet other robotics teams and to be inspired by the next level of competition, with
some amazing projects, Lego attachments and programming on display. A huge thank you to
Toby L, Melanie T and the Lu family for assisting with driving students to the competition and
supporting them on the day.
K-2 Art Club
K-2 Art Club students are proud to present their Sakura blossom inspired art work with all parents, families and community members. Students used a range of techniques to create this beautiful artwork, such as blowing Chinese ink with straws, painting with cotton buds and cutting and pasting. Everyone also accepted the challenge of writing their Chinese names with complicated lines. What persistent and open-minded learners we have here at LCWPS! Well done!

Robotics Excursion
Escorted by our STEM teachers, Mrs Silipo and Mrs Lee, Year 6 robotics students were given the
wonderful opportunity last Monday to take a behind the scenes tour of Sydney University’s
Australian Centre for Field Robotics. Students enjoyed learning about a variety of land, air and
underwater robots and were inspired to see where further studies in robotics could take them. A
special thanks to two parents of our school community for making the visit possible: Dr Stuart
Wishart, who co-ordinated the visit and helped drive students on the day, and Dr David
Johnson, who hosted our visit.
What a Champion! A huge congratulations to our very own Coach Brown
who recently competed in the Commonwealth
Veteran Fencing Championships held in Canberra at
the Australian Institute of Sport.
Coach Brown placed:
1st in the Veteran Foil
1st Overall in her age group
9th in the Veteran Epee
In September Coach Brown also competed in the
Asian Masters Fencing Championships in Japan
placing:
3rd in the Veteran foil
5th in the Veteran Epee
Amazing results, especially after having shoulder
surgery at the start of the year!
