Language Acquisition 1 Language Acquisition Second language learning is a complex task that requires a risk-free environment in which meaningful and purposeful interactions can occur. Providing opportunities that allow for such communication are essential to the second language learning process. According to second language acquisition research, ELLs benefit from content-area instruction that is accommodated to their need for comprehensible input; academic language instruction integrated into content-area instruction; programs that hold high expectations for students for academic success; and language proficiency standards that provide a common framework for integrating language and content instruction for English learners.
