What was the Holocaust?

• The killing of millions of Jews and other

people by the Nazis during World War II

• An event or situation in which many

people are killed and many things are

destroyed especially by fire

• Holocaust Survivor Video

What was the Holocaust?

• Hitler began to send people to concentration camps.

Some of these places were work camps where the

prisoners worked in the field or in factories. Most were

considered “death camps” where the prisoners died

once they arrived. Others died due to disease and

starvation.

• The groups most affected by the Holocaust were the

Jewish people, disabled people, the Romani

(Gypsies), Jehovah’s Witnesses, and prisoners of war.

NAZI PROPAGANDA

Nazi propaganda blamed the world’s woes and the war on the Jews.

This is a swastika, the symbol of

the Nazi army.

First, Jewish people were required to wear yellow Stars of David on their clothing to identify themselves as Jewish.

STAR OF DAVID

Jews had to wear the Star of David at all times or risk being arrested.

Then, Jews and other “inferior” people were forced to live in ghettos: run-down, crowded parts of the cities with strict rules and curfews.

They were forbidden from practicing their religion, among other things.

Ultimately, Prisoners were loaded into cattle cars—train cars—to travel to concentration camps.

Sometimes these journeys lasted for days with no food or water.

The concentration camps were dirty and crowded.

Prisoners were given thin,

striped uniforms to wear

regardless of the weather

conditions.

CONCENTRATION CAMP BUNKS

This is where the prisoners slept. The crowded, cold conditions lead to disease and death.

Sometimes as many as 4 people slept in one bed

GAS CHAMBERS

Many Jews died in the gas chambers, which were disguised as showers.

UNIT 3 RESEARCH PROJECT PORTFOLIO• You will create a slide presentation or a research paper about the real life experiences of Jewish

individuals or communities living under Nazi occupation during World War II. You can also research people who helped the Jews during the Holocaust.

• You may also research and write about any events related to World War 2

• You MAY NOT use the Diary of Anne Frank or the topic of Anne Frank’s life and family.

• You may choose another topic for your research presentation as long as it is related to the play The Diary of Anne Frank and approved by Mrs. Marshall.

• You need a thesis statement, which is the main point that you plan to address in your research project. The evidence you provide in your project should support your thesis statement.

• Your presentation can be a slide presentation or a research paper.

SLIDE PRESENTATION

10 slides or more, with text and graphics on each slide.

• 1st slide- Introduction, with thesis statement, to introduce your topic. It needs to be a paragraph with 5 sentences, and graphics (picture, map, chart, etc.)

• 2nd slide-8th slide- Information about your topic. Include text on each slide, with 3 sentences or more. You need a graphic on each slide (a picture, map, chart, etc.)

• 9th slide- Conclusion- Conclusion, restate your thesis statement, and give concluding thoughts about your research. It needs to be a paragraph with 5 sentences and graphics (picture, map, chart, etc.)

• 10th slide- A list of your 3 sources, , including author, title, where you found the information (book, article, website, etc.), and date.

RESEARCH PAPER

2 pages or more, 5 paragraphs or more (and 5 sentences in each paragraph). You need

a list of your sources on the 2nd page. You need 3 or more sources.

First page:

• 1st paragraph: Introduction, with thesis statement, to introduce your topic• 2nd paragraph: Information about your topic

• 3rd paragraph: Information about your topic

• 4th paragraph: Information about your topic

• 5th paragraph: Conclusion, restate your thesis statement, and give concluding thoughts

about your research

Second page:• A list of your 3 sources, including author, title, where you found the information (book,

article, website, etc.), and date.
