Plurilingual /pluricultural skills
-communicate linguistically and interact culturally
-skills and languages should not be seen as separate, superimposed, juxtaposed but as a complex and integrated web of skills and knowledge

The AEFE network is based on the French education system – education and excellence for all. In languages this requires a
PERSONALIZED PATHWAY TO SUCCESS IN LANGUAGES
Language TeachingThe European Framework encourages
linguistic diversity from a young ageRequires expertise and adaptation to
local context and resourcesEMILE/DNL is necessary to this processA rigid 50/50 system unnecessary (the
word “Bilingual” should be avoided to describe such systems – misnomer) – it is not a guarantee of quality / efficiency
Flexibility is essential in the organisation
Any language policy should be integrated into the School Project and approved by the Inspectors and the Service Pedagogique at the AEFE
Languages are both the object and the means - articulate language teaching with the acquisition of knowledge in different subjects.
Allow all students to have French as a second mother tongue
The planning process
Define the linguistic situation of the country, the school, the family
Be aware of the student’s study, career projects
Do not merely transpose French teaching methods
In order to ensure plurilingualism we must:
• develop teaching in the languages and of the languages (diversify subjects taught in other languages)
• give priority to situations facilitating language acquisition and experience.
• consolidate the mother tongue• use diversified/complementary teaching
methods rather than mechanically superposing them
• globalise language hours and vary their distribution
• put in place a school policy for national language certificates
• open up International Sections from primary with the language of the host country
• Interactive and innovative teaching methods
• Actions Pedagogiques Pilotes
It is a true skill to learn languages and to learn in another language, to
discover the world and to think using these languages as a medium. A skill
which the AEFE should be able to develop for those students who are
entrusted to us.
