Editors’ Note

In the international seminar on Language Maintenance and Shift III, there are some new issues. First, the committee changes the previous theme into “Investigating Local Wisdom through IndigenousLanguage”. Through the new theme, the committee invites language practitioners to discuss theproblems concerning the importance of maintaining indigenous languages because the languagesfunction as a means of expressing local wisdom. Second, the seminar uses the new label, LAMAS, theacronym which was proposed by Prof. Dr. Bambang Kaswanti Purwo in the previous seminar, tomake the particiants easily remember it. Third, most of the keynote speakers come from variousinstitutions. Those are Dr. Johnny Tjia (Summer Institute of Linguistics, Indonesia-International),Prof. Jee Sun Nam, Ph.D (Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Korea), Prof. Dr. Mahsun, M.S.(Badan Pengembangan dan Pembinaan Bahasa, Jakarta, Indonesia), Prof. Dr. Bambang KaswantiPurwo (Atma Jaya Catholic University, Jakarta-Indonesia), Prof. Dr. I Dewa Putu Wijana (GadjahMada University, Yogjakarta, Indonesia), Prof. Drs. Ketut Artawa, M.A., Ph.D (Udayana University,Denpasar, Indonesia), and Dr. Suharno, M.Ed. (Diponegoro University, Semarang, Indonesia).

There are 113 participants who present the papers covering various topic areas. Those are 38 paperson sociolinguistics, 14 papers on morphology, 13 papers on applied linguistics, 8 papers onantropholinguistics, 8 papers on discourse analysis, 8 papers on cognitive linguistics, 7 papers onethnography of communication, and 7 papers on computational linguistics.

We would like to thank the seminar committee for putting together the seminar that gave rise to thiscollection of papers. Thanks also go to the head and secretary of the Master Program in LinguisticsDiponegoro University, without whom the seminar would not have been possible.

THE ANALYSIS OF FACE WANTS AS SELF IMAGE USED BY AGNES MONICA IN KICKANDY SHOW

Mastuti Ajeng SubiantiDiponegoroUniversity, Semarang

[email protected]

Abstract

In communication people usually show their self-image and prestige through their language.Based on their language, it can be known how the speaker is viewed and recognized in the society.Toanalyze how the speaker wants to be viewed by the society, there is the concept of face wants. Thereare two kinds of face wants, positive face and negative face. Using the concept of face wants, in thisstudy discusses the utterance of Agnes Monica as an Indonesian singer in Kick Andy Show whichaims to observe her self-image through face wants analysis.Self-image that the speaker wants toshow can influence her face wants. After knowing her self-image through face wants analysis, thewriter will know the speaker’s social status. This article is conducted by taking a record of Kick AndyShow for approximately six minutes length and transcribes the record. By transcribing the record, the self-image of Agnes Monica that she presents to the audience would be recognized therefore thespeaker’s social status also could be known.Key words: face wants, positive face, negative face, and self-image

1. Introduction

People in the world communicate each other by using languages. O’Grady et al. (1997: 1) states,“A language is many things – a system of communication, a medium for thought, and a vehicle forliterary expression …” It means that a language has an important role in human being’s life. A languageis used as a means of communication by all people. It is used to communicate which could be expressedin verbal through words or non-verbal through person’s expression or mimic. The expression could beseen by face. According to Yule (1996:60) states, “Face means the public self-image of a person”. Here, face is defined as self- image because people want to show or claim himself or herself in his or her socialmember. The self-image is constructed by individual in social interaction. But he or she cannot choosefreely the image of self that they would to present because he or she behave in keeping the social norms.

As described above, self- image influence face. The face itself has a concept which is face wants. There are two kinds of face wants (Yule, 1996:61), negative face and positive face. Negative face, whenothers need to be independent. Then, positive face, when others need to be accepted as a member. Thosekinds of face wants could be determined by the individual’s utterance. If the individual’s utterance showsthat he or she is independent, it could be include as negative face. In other hand, if the individual’sutterance shows that he or she is a social member, it could be include as positive face. Therefore, thisobjective is to observe the individual’s utterance which is Agnes Monica as a subject of this studywhether her utterance include the negative face or positive face.

2. Face And Self-Image

Through face, individual’s feeling could be recognized based on expression that is showntherefore face has an important role in interaction. This statement is supported by Goffman ([1955] 1967:5) cited by Muehleisen et al. (2005:10) states that, “Face plays an important part in this interaction as it isdescribed as an “image of self delineated in terms of approved social attributes”. In addition, face wants isan individual’s expectation concerning their public self-image to be respected According to Yule(1996:61) states that there are two kinds of face wants, negative and positive faces. A person withnegative face needs to be independent, to have freedom of action and not to be imposed on by others. The opposite pole from negative is positive. A person with positive face needs to be accepted and treatedas a member of the same group. In the simple terms, negative face is the need to be independent andpositive face is the need to be connected (Yule, 1996:62).

From two kinds of face wants, person’s self-image could be recognized. Goffman (1955, 1956,1967) cited by Muehleisen et al. (2005:10) present two different of self, the self as a social product andthe self as an individual’s construct. Self could be constructed by the individual social interaction but he

or she cannot choose the self-image freely that he or she would like to present to the public. The self-image comes from how the individual present his or her self to the public.

3. Research Method

This research was conducted by taking a record of Kick Andy Show with the subject is AgnesMonica. She is an Indonesian singer that nowadays becomes an international singer. The duration of therecording is approximately six minutes. After taking a record, it is transcribed and analyzed using facewants analysis.

This research uses qualitative data. Hancock (1998:6) says that qualitative data is concerned withdeveloping explanations of social phenomena. On other words, qualitative research concerns humanbehavior and social word. In qualitative research, there are some types of data collection. Merriam (1988)and Bogdan & Biklen (1992) cited in Creswell (1994:150) says, “The data collections types areobservations, interviews, documents and audiovisual materials”. Here, audiovisual materials such asphotographs, videotapes, art objects, computer software and film. This research belongs to audiovisualmaterial because it is taking a record from Kick Andy Show.

4. Discussion

Based on the theory before about face wants, the utterance of Agnes Monica shows the negativeface. Through the utterance above, it could be seen clearly that she is an independent person who hasfreedom to do what she wants to be. It can be shown through what she said, “Keluarga aku tusebenarnya datengnya dari dunia olahraga. Jadi mami itu 10 besar dunia untuk atlit tenis meja dan papiitu di basket gitu. Memang istilahnya mental yang aku dan kakakku dapat dari orang tua aku memangseperti itu ya disiplin atlit trus udah gitu kerja kerasnya harus seperti apa totalitasnya”. In that utterance, she said about herself which is in family she was taught to be a person who should had discipline andhard work. She also has freedom to do what she wants. She said that her parents are athletes but she doesnot be an athlete; she chooses to be a singer. Besides that she is an independent person because she couldbe a singer which is her dream since she was a child.

The other example of Agnes’s utterance is “… sementara kalau aku seperti nyanyi aja istilahnyaaku perlu latihan, aku latihan fisik, aku fitness, latihan vocal kemudian aku juga masih belajar…” Thisutterance also shows negative face because in this utterance, she shows how independent she is. Throughthis utterance she wants to show her self-image as an independent person. Another utterance that alsoshow the negative face is “Orang tua sebenarnya gak pernah bilang ya sama aku jadi mereka maunyaaku jadi seperti apa…” Through this utterance, it shows how independent she is, because her parentsalways support and encourage her to do her carrier.

As talked before that face wants is influenced by self-image. The face wants that Agnes show isnegative face and she makes her self-image as a confident person. It because she could tell the firstexperience becomes a singer. She says that she becomes a singer when she was three years old and startedto make album when she was six years old. It is shown from the utterance: “Kalau mulai menyanyisebenarnya dari umur 3 tahun ya tapi buat album itu dari aku umur 6 tahun”.

The next utterance is ”…Jadi aku suka banget meniru gayanya mbak Desi Anwar di depankaca…” Through this utterance, Agnes wants to show that she is not only an independent person but sheis also a confident person. It is as her self-image. The background of the utterance is she could imitate heridol which is Desi Anwar. In that time, she acted like her idol in front of the mirror. From that situation, her mother saw her and brought her to the studio. It could be concluded that her parents always encourageher to make her confident. Therefore, the self-image that she wants to be shown is her confident to feelfree in expressing her feeling.

5. Conclusion

Based on the analysis above, the conversation between Agnes Monica and Andy F. Noya containnegative politeness because from the Agnes’s utterances show that she is independent person. Theutterances also show that she has a freedom of action. She has a freedom to choose what she wants to be.Moreover, her parents always encourage her to achieve her dream. From the example of her utterance, public will know her self-image which is confident, independent and free to express herself. Besides that,Agnes also wants to show to the public how independent she is by making statement that she couldachieve her dream by working hardly.
