LANGUAGES AT ADELAIDE HIGH SCHOOL

Language learning underpins effective intercultural communication and enables deep and authentic global citizenship. At Adelaide High School, learning a language offers students the opportunity to:

• Study languages in an environment which is vibrant and exciting

• Develop world class communication skills

• Develop literacy and numeracy skills which underpin all learning

• Participate in local cultural events and the language speaking communities

• Engage authentically with the wider global community where multilingualism is the norm.

Adelaide High School has a vibrant language learning culture• All students study a language until the end of Year

10 and many students study two languages.

• Special Language students make a commitment to study two languages other than English for three years and at least one language until the end of Stage 2 (Year 12).

The languages offered include:

• Auslan Continuers

• Chinese Continuers

• Chinese Background (SACE Stage 1 and 2)

• Italian Continuers

• French Continuers

• German Continuers

• Japanese Continuers

• Modern Greek Continuers

• Spanish Continuers

Please note: SACE determined eligibility criteria apply for Chinese Continuers, Chinese Background and Japanese Continuers.

Exchanges and Study ToursAdelaide High School has well-established sister school relationships to support the Languages program. Currently, Adelaide High School has sister school links with:

• Asahi High School in Osaka, Japan• Heriburg Gymnasium in Coesfeld, Nord Rhein

Westfalen, Germany

• IES La Sisla in Sonsecas, Spain

• IIS Quintino Sella in Biella, Italy

• Jinan Foreign Language School in Jinan, China

• Qingdao No.9, Shandong Province, China (Friendly Cooperation Agreement)

• Lycée Saint Sauveur in Redon, Brittany, France

• 7th High School of Corfu, Greece

When travel is permissable, there are annual exchanges and study tours – both incoming and outgoing – which develop students’ language and communication skills, intercultural experiences and international understandings. Students have many opportunities to host international students.

Language curriculum includes digital connections with the sister schools.

Program EntryAdelaide High School is South Australia’s only Special Interest Language School. Details regarding applications for Special Entry Programs are available from the Adelaide High School website.
