he history of humanityteaches us that humanmobility is a universalTphenomenon of all ages.

He moves in search of new goals, from the imperfect to the perfect, and from inadequacy tosufficiency. Hence migration hasbecome a symbol of the existenceof man. The Bible is basically thehistory of man on the move. It

was hunger that first forced theHebrews to migrate to Egypt(Gen 12:10). The exodus ofIsraelites proves that migration

from one place to another insearch of better life situation is tobe seen in accordance with theplan of God. As Christians we arefollowers of a man on the movewho had nowhere to lay hishead (Mt. 8:20). Churchenvisages the whole Christian lifenot merely as a migration butrather as a pilgrimage. Church is apilgrim community here on earth.

Migration on an unprecedentedscale is taking place all over the

world. Many nations, in fact, would not be what they are today

without the contribution made bymillions of immigrants (Ergamigrantes, No. 5). In the contextof India, especially that of urbanareas, migration is a significantreality. Indian cities have

witnessed increasing presence ofmigrant Christians. The life ofthese migrant Christians isexposed to many problems anddifficulties in the new socio-

    cultural atmosphere.

Migration has many implicationsdue to demographic, religious, political, cultural and economicchanges. The Church, sign andinstrument of unity amongpeople, has been closely involvedand has pondered over thedemands of the migration. Fromthe ecclesial perspective, migration

invites special pastoral care in thefield of ritual, liturgical, cultural, social fields. The Church is to beinstrumental among the migrantsfor the promotion of humandignity, human identity anduniversal communion.

There are numerous families whohave settled down in differentcities of India and abroad. Usuallythe first generation of the migrant

families is reluctant to go to thelocal parish community exceptperhaps for an occasional Massand services such as those in Lent

or Christmas season. They maynot have much contact with thelocal parish either. Language andculture are big barriers becausemost of these migrants often have

very little knowledge of Englishor the local language. The fear

whether they will be accepted bythe local community alsodistances them from the localcommunity. Financial situation

also may be a hindrance to theirintegration in the localcommunity. Many may be gettingjust enough money or barelyenough to make both ends meet.Such people may not be able togive much to the parish by way ofmonetary contribution. Differencein liturgical celebrations andpastoral style of the parish priestalso work as a great hindrance for

many to integrate themselves tothe local Catholic community.Even the reception of sacramentsbecomes difficult because manyare not able to make theirconfessions in English or in thelocal language.

There are several thousands ofstudents belonging to Syro-Malabar Church pursuing variouscourses in institutions run by

Catholic as well as non-Catholicagencies in the big cities. Thenumber of employed bachelorsalso is big in these cities. Sincethey have come for studies or fortemporary work, and will go backafter a few years, they dont takeinterest in learning the language

of the place nor do they getintegrated into the localcommunity. Most of them willlike to be anonymous and wouldnot live their faith unless they getproper attention in their ownlanguage and tradition. In many acase the non-Christian authoritiesof the educational institutions in

which they study will not allowthem to go out for religious

services. Therefore the localChurch authorities will have totake special interest and contactthe educational institutions forpermission. The overburdenedpastors of the Latin Church whodo not have much interest in theseyoungsters may not be in aposition to undertake suchministries. This is the case in mostof the metro cities of India, and

    in the cities abroad.

It is needless to say that Churcheshave the duty to give due pastoralcare to their faithful wherever theyare. It is urgent because the slowerthe pace of action the more thetime required to bring them backto the consciousness of theidentity as belonging to anOriental Church. The firstgeneration migrants who areuprooted from their cultural andgeographical background aretotally estranged in the localsituation. They often becomeanonymous in the large majorityof the faithful of other Churches

who surround them. That maylead them even to the loss offaith. Some, on the other handmay join non-Catholiccommunities because they areinfluenced very much by them.

The second generation of thesemigrants may not even have theawareness that they once belongedto another sui iuris Church. Thereality that the faith dies out ifproper care is not given for the

nourishment of faith life of themigrants in their unfamiliarsituations has motivated theChurch to be actively involved inpastoral care of her children. Thelack of proper pastoral care forthe migrants has severalconsequences such as: the loss of

sense of oneness with the MotherChurch, lack of proper liturgicallife, lack of proper religiousinstruction, a feeling of isolationfrom the rest of the communityand steep decline of priestly andreligious vocations. Hence thepastoral care within the samecountry or abroad has been oneof the growing concerns of thedifferent churches both Catholic

    and Non-catholic, in the moderntimes.

Let us all bear in mind thatpastoral care and evangelizationare also co-related. When we thinkabout the spread of Syro-MalabarChurch, we understand that oftenit is the Syro-Malabar migrants

who paved the way also forevangelization work of theChurch. Priests followed themigrants to their places forpastoral work. Wherever there

were the presence of themembers of our Church weadopted also as fields ofevangelization. So the migrants ofour Church can be considered asthe first missionaries of ourChurch. Migration necessitates thepastoral ministry and together

with it, it helps our Church tospread our missionary activities.

Thus the migration of the Syro-Malabar faithful to different partsof the world offers our Churchnew prospects and new challengesto work for the spread of theKingdom of God.

earch for better jobopportunities and livingSconditions generally ends

up in migration. Once the basicneed of the body is met, theinner search begins forquenching the spiritual thrust.

Rather even in the search forbasic needs of the body, divineintervention is sought. Thisphenomenon existed in thehistory of humanity from timeimmemorial.

Living Faith and traditionssupersede the boundaries. Bigcities attracted the educated andthe business class of the Syro-

    Malabar Christians who could

not find satisfactory job in theirmother land. Kerala, under theinitiatives of the Church, didhave schools and the Keralites

were professionally qual ified inmany fields. But lack of jobopportunities there, may be

considered a blessing indisguise, has paved the way forthe global migration. Thepresence of Keralites is felt inevery part of the globe. TheMarthoma Christians, sociologically a very outgoingcommunity among the otherIndian communities, did nothave any difficulty to get settledin various corners of the globe.

This was the reason for the

growth of the Syro-MalabarChurch which was confinedmainly to the Kerala territories togrow to a global Church in 20thand 21st centuries. Thisgeneration is blessed to see andenjoy its growth, to be a globalone.

Reaching Mumbai, Pune, Nasikcities empty handed and with noone to contact, the stories ofthe first migrants were not thatgreat. But with hard work, theystarted earning their livelihood.

They did not neglect theirspiritual life which was deeplyrooted in their very being. Theexisting Latin Diocese of that

time, Bombay Archdiocese andPune Diocese opened their armsto welcome the migrants andlater appointed chaplains for thespecial pastoral care within thelimitations. Also in view oftaking care of some spiritualneeds of the migrants, thefaithful under their owninitiative started newassociations such as Kerala

Catholic Association in Bombayand St. Thomas Catholics ofIndia in Pune. The migrants wereable to set apart their might forthe spiritual needs as well as forsome infrastructures.

    For the migrant Syro-Malabar

Catholics, the Church was azero Church in all senses. Manymigrant faithful did not knoweven to spell the name of theChurch. They neither hadbishop, nor priests, sisters, seminarians. There were nochurches or other infra-

At this juncture, in1978, Mar Antony Padiyara wasappointed Apostolic Visitor tostudy the situation of themigrant Syro-Malabar Catholics. He reached Mumbai, conducted18 meetings from 4th to 18thFebruary 1979 and a report wassubmitted in 1980. After lengthydiscussions in Vatican, CBCI,SMBC on 30th April 1988, the

    Kalyan Eparchy was erected.

Immediately after theinauguration of the Eparchy, inorder to cater to the spiritualneeds of the faithful, priests

were appointed who came fromvarious dioceses of the motherChurch as well as the religiouscongregations. The new eparchytried to pave strong foundations

for its pastoral development.Keeping the same territory ofthe Latin parishes, the newEparchy also tried to organizepastoral activities for the Syro-Malabar faithful with the helpof the existing Latin Churchesand dioceses. Some priests and

seminarians ascribed to the neweparchy in the early years.

In order to make sure of theChristians presence and servicein all 15 districts of theEparchy, 10 of them wereentrusted to MST, VC, MCBSand CMI religiouscongregations. Many religious

    women came forward to start

educational and other socialcharitable institutions and toassist in the pastoral work.

The faithful wholeheartedlyaccepted the new set up withlots of enthusiasm though there

were a few incidents of initialtroubles. A minority of thefaithful even objected to itsestablishment and growth. LongHoly Qurbana, new ecclesial setup, financial burdens tomaintain parishes and priestsand the frightening face of thezero church were enough forthem to raise their eyebrow(s).Planting the St. Thomastradition in this multi religious-linguistic-cultural city was neveran easy task. God has revealed His will to His people in various ways at various times.Redemption of mankind is accomplished by His son Jesus Christ who was thepure and sublime manifestation of His will. Therefore to obey His son meansto obey the Father and to obey the Father means to obey His commandments,

which is the person of Christ Himself. To enter the kingdom of the Fatherone must keep the commandments. God is the supreme God and the sourceof all good. Jesus too shares in the supreme goodness of the Father.

Therefore Jesus is the commandment. Hence one is obliged to love theLord his God with all his heart, with all his soul, with all his might and withall his strength. To obey the commandments means to care for theneighbor. That is why one should not kill, commit adultery; steal and bearfalse witness. One must honor his/her father and mother. (Mt 19:16-19)

Following Jesus involves keeping His commandments. Following Jesusclosely will finally lead us to sanctity of life and the perfection of the Father. Beperfect as your heavenly Father is perfect is the exhortation of Jesus. But to beperfect one must sell all that he/she has and give to the poor. This is a pre-requisite for us to follow Jesus and also to enter the kingdom of heaven. (cf Mt19:21)

Christian life involves keeping the commandments. Jesus has not abolishedthe law (cf Mt 5:17). Jesus is the perfect fulfillment of every minute law. Fornot even a letter of the law shall be removed but fulfilled in him.

The power of the spirit is at work in the words of the law and the law of theWord. The words of the law are contained in the sacred scripture. The law iscontained in the person of the Word i.e., Jesus Himself. Hence the one whohears the word and practices it will become worthy of the kingdom of God.Our righteousness must therefore exceed that of the scribes, pharisees and thegentiles. (Mt 5:20:46-47).

The righteousness of the Pharisees has been limited to the external law. Therighteousness of the people of God consists in loving the Lord their God

with their whole heart, mind, soul and body and loving their neighbors asthemselves (Cf Mt 22:37-40, Deut 6:5, Lev 19:18). All the law and theprophets can be concluded in this one message. Fulfillment of the law iskeeping the commandments of love. Love is the fulfillment of the law. (Rom28:9-10)

The Ten Commandments place before us the fundamental duties towardsGod and towards our neighbors. There is a grave obligation to obey theserules which are oriented towards our redemption. Since they are engraved onhuman hearts they are immutable and oblige always and everywhere. Thesupreme law which is engraved on human hearts is the law of love. No one isdispensed from it. Apart from Jesus love you can do nothing (Cf Jn 15:5).

    Holy QurbanaPart: 5

The Command of Christ at Last Supperdo this in memory of me (1 Cor 11:25)reminds us that our Qurbana is infulfillment of His command. Besides, itreminds us of other commands given byChrist in relation to the Eucharist. Jesus

said, Where two or three are gatheredtogether in my name I am there amongthem (Mt 18:20). The hymn let us gatherin His holy Name reminds us that it is Hislove that brings us together around thealtar. Therefore, love, unity andforgiveness are indispensable elements ofthe Holy Qurbana. Whenever we gather inHis name there is the presence of theliving God among us.

Church is a community gathered togetherin His holy Name to offer Qurbana inunity and love. As the Fathers of thechurch teach us, it is the church that makesthe Eucharist and the Eucharist thatmakes the church. Through the sacrificeof the cross Jesus brought together the

scattered children of God. Church is the people ofGod gathered together by the Holy Spirit in thename of Christ to worship the Father.

Jesus has taught us that first we must be reconciledwith our brothers and sisters and then come andoffer our gifts on the altar (Mt 5: 23-24). We arereminded of it as we sing let us be reconciled and

prepare a new altar. A new altar is the reconciledheart where God dwells and it is there that theQurbana becomes real.

Through the sacrifice on the cross, Jesus reconciledus to God the Father (Eph 2:16). As the prodigal songot reconciled with his father, the father prepared abanquet for him. (Lk 15:23). Holy Qurbana is thecelebration of our reconciliation with God and aninvitation to get reconciled with one another.

When Jesus prepared a meal for the disciples on the

shores of Galilee, he told them to bring some of thefish that they had just caught (Jn 21: 13). Even todayHe is inviting each of us to bring at His feet thefruits of our toil. Remaining in His love one shouldoffer the sacrifice. Love comes from reconciliationand forgiveness. It is the love of God that shouldmotivate us to offer a new sacrifice.

Everyone who is in the state of sin shall experienceliberation only through the sacrament ofreconciliation. Reconciliation will take place whenone is liberated from sin. Holy Qurbana is a sign and

symbol of our total reconciliation with God, andthereby we have the experience of the love of theFather. Jesus gave us the commandment to love all,as he has loved us. (Jn 13:34). This command ofChrist too is commemorated in the Holy Qurbana as

we sing With the love of Lord Jesus...... Let usremember that living the essence of the HolyQurbana is living a life of love and sacrifice.

    PARENTING

There is no living being born onearth who is as dependant as ahuman being. The new born ofany other living being, say a calfis up and running about in a dayor so. In three to four years it isready to give birth to the nextgeneration. But a human child

during this time is barely able toeat properly. Studies of the humanbrain have shown that prefrontalcortex, the part of the brain thatis responsible for proper thinking, analyzing any situation, comparealternate scenarios and take a

proper decision is fully developedin a human being only by the ageof 23 to 24. One of the mainreasons as to why teenagers are

not able to take proper decisionsin life is because their prefrontalcortex is not fully developed.Parenting is a job that begins

when the baby begins his life inthe womb and the job goes on tillthe baby is 23-24 year old.

The word 'job' has been usedpurposely to define theresponsibility of bringing up

children. It is to bring to focuscertain aspects of parenting thatare rarely discussed. Every jobneeds preparation. To become adoctor, one needs five years ofdedicated studies. To become anengineer one studies for fouryears. To become a catholic priest, one needs to study for more thantwelve years. But to become afather or a mother, every one feels

    no preparation is required.

According to Indian laws as longas the man is above 21 years andgirl is above 18 years, they can getmarried and start a family. So ineffect, parenting is a job for whichone walks in with the leastqualifications and preparation.

It is heartening that the Churchhas started insisting on three daysof preparation before a youngstergets married. Given the hugeresponsibility of bringing up thenext generation and looking afterthem for more than two decades,

    thejob ofparentingneeds much

more thanthree days ofpreparation.Despite preparingfor years, allprofessionals gothrough periodic jobtraining programs. Similarlyparents should also get regulartraining on how to do their jobmore efficiently. This is where

organizations like Pithruvedi andMathrusangam have a big role toplay.

But there might be skepticsamong us who might question thispoint of view. They may pointout that several generations in thepast have brought up theirprogeny without any of the abovementioned training programs. So

what is so new about parenting

that suddenly there is a big hueand cry about proper training?

Parents today encounter newchallenges while bringing upchildren. They are facingsituations and questions that havenever been faced by earlier

generation of parents . In thepast, temptations came in theform of bars, cinema theaters,

VCRs and television sets in theliving rooms. In rural areas andsmall towns, kids grew up in anenvironment where many peopleknew them personally. So whetherit was the tendency to smoke, drink alcohol, watch pornography, the children had to do it in public

view. The fear of being spotted bythis 'extended family' kept many

    PARENTING

away from temptations. Childrengrew up in homes where themother and grandparents werepresent throughout the day.Even if children fell intotemptations once in a while, parents could easily spot themistakes and correct them in time.

But today, the situation hasdramatically changed. Thetemptations have moved into thepersonal space of the kids. Todaytemptations are coming in fromthe same mobile phone they useto keep in touch with theirparents, the Internet they need touse for their academic work.

    Today's children are being

exposed to these temptations at amuch earlier age. Studies haveshown that one in three childrenis exposed to pornographiccontent before the age of ten.

How will parents deal with thissituation? The traditional way ofdealing with these temptations

was to deny physical access tothese sources of temptations. Inthe past it was easy to block accessto the sources of temptationsbecause they were in the public

space. But today the same tacticwill not work. Children who go toschool need not possess a mobilephone. But even if parentsrightfully deny their kids a mobilephone, they have access to theirfriend's and relatives' mobilephone. Internet too is easilyavailable.

It is often said that 'true character

is what you are in the dark'. Forthe first time we have to build ageneration who have to be fullylive up to these words. Today inmany homes both parents are

working. Most of the homes have

only single child. Most of the kidsdo not spend time on outdoorsports with other friends. Sotoday's child is a loner, with lotof time to spend in his privacy. How do they spend these privatemoments with all the moderngadgets at their disposal?

Today's parents have many newquestions about their 'job' ofparenting for which the answersfrom the previous generationmight not be of much help. Tobuild a new generation withstrong moral values, parents surelyneed new sources to provide newanswers. In today's times, parenting will be one of the

toughest jobs and the mostchallenging to take up.

    KEYCORNER

are reservoirs of strength andbrain. There is no doubt thattodays young generation isperhaps the smartest of all timeyouth, especially in muchtechnological advancement. Someof our youth, the way they carrythemselves, the professionalism, the fine balance between work, fun and faith, their display isadmirable. Not only do they workhard but also work smart.

Pope Paul VI years ahead hadsaid, Human society is sorely ill.

The cause is not so much thedepletion of natural resources, nor their monopolistic control bya privileged few; it is rather the

weakening of brotherly tiesbetween individuals and nations

(PopulorumProgressio, 66). Ourefforts to bring the youth together

will be geared to develop in themthe art of Christian loving. To go

to those who are suffering andthose who are searching, and togive them the joy that Jesus wantsto bestow.

Unfortunately the elders oftencriticize the youth ministry forbeing heavy on fun and light on

faith. Its fired up entertainmentand watered down gospel. But weneed to strike a balance betweenthem. And so through creative, youthful prayer sessions and youthcatechesis we look forward tosuccessfully compete with the

world and time of our youth. Forit is a crucial time to continueplanting those seeds of Gods

Word into their lives as the KEY

Army 4 Christ will precisely helpus do that.

There is also a danger, todaysgeneration is more worldy thanprevious ones. They know more, and at an earlier age. They haveso much information so easilyaccessible. For all the new thingsthey know, there are a lot ofthings they do not know thatprevious generations would have

considered common knowledge. The ministry for the youth mustaim to develop the personality ofyoungsters. To have firm faith,

determination and confidence inoneself and to be sure of theirdecision, so that they will put theirbest efforts to achieve their goaland then nothing can stop themfrom stepping the stairs ofsuccess.

Often youth ministry is seen onlyas a means to attract and sustainthe youth within the Church. Butit is much more; in fact it aims atthe holistic development of ouryoung friends. These are thedreams that one should see forthe youth of our diocese. It seemsan uphill task, but somebody hasto plunge to lead our youngsters. Iam ready to give my share ofefforts and my young friends, Iknow, will surely respond.

    SAINTS

    STORY

    h

    am\w

St Thrse of Lisieux lived in this world for only 24years leading a very simple and hidden life but, after

her death and the publication of her writings, shebecame one of the best-known and best-loved saints.Little Thrse continues to help the simplest, little, poor and the suffering souls who pray to her. Sheillumined the whole Church with her profoundspiritual doctrine to the point that Blessed John PaulII chose, in 1997, to give her the title Doctor of theChurch, in addition to that of Patroness ofMissions, which Pius XI had already attributed toher in 1939.

Blessed John Paul II described her as an expert in

the scientia amoris (science of love). Thrseexpressed this science in the story of her life, published a year after her death with the title TheStory of a Soul. The book immediately met withenormous success, it was translated into manylanguages and disseminated throughout the world.

The Story of a Soul is a marvelous story of Love, told with such authenticity, simplicity and freshnessthat the reader cannot but be fascinated by it! But

what was this Love that filled Thrses whole life, from childhood to death? As Pope Benedict XVI

puts it, this Love has a Face, it has a Name, it isJesus! The Saint speaks continuously of Jesus.

Her religious profession, on the Feast of the Nativityof Mary, 8th September 1890, she told, What abeautiful feast on which to become the Spouse of

Jesus! It was the little new-born Holy Virgin whopresented her little Flower to the little Jesus. Forher, being a religious meant being a bride of Jesusand a mother of souls.

Thrse died on the evening of 30th September

1897, saying, My God, I love you!, looking at theCrucifix she held tightly in her hands. These lastwords were the continuous breathing of her soul, thebeating of her heart. The simple words Jesus I loveyou, are at the heart of all her writings. In her lastLetter, on an image that represents Jesus the Child inthe consecrated Host, the Saint wrote these simple

words: I cannot fear a God who made himself sosmall for me! I love him! In fact, he is nothing butLove and Mercy!

St. Raphael is an angel of God whois cited in the Bible. In the Book of

Tobit, he is mentioned as havingassisted Tobias (Tobits son) on histravels to Media. Tobit is describedas a man of good faith whosuffered from blindness andpoverty. He sent his son, Tobias, toa distant city to collect money hehad deposited there, and hired acompanion to accompany theyouth. The companion was actuallythe archangel Raphael in disguise.

Their journey was successful: notonly was the money recovered, buta medicine made from a monstrousfish Tobias encountered along the

way cured Tobit's blindness. Forthis reason, St. Raphael is calledupon to protect all travelers on theirjourneys.

Belief precedes, enablesunderstanding of Christsmessage, Pope BenedictXVI (CWN 27-08-12)

St. Peter and the other apostlesunderstood the message of Jesusbecause they first believed in Him.Many listeners could not acceptChrists statement that He is thebread of life. Their problem, theHoly Father said, was that theycould not look beyond theimmediate material world. They

hoped for an earthly leader, andwhen Jesus presented a differentteaching, they fell away. Theapostles, however, recognized theessence of Christs mission, whichSt. Peter acknowledged by saying:Lord, to whom shall we go. Youhave the words of eternal life, and

we have believed, and have come to

know, that you are the Holy One ofGod. Citing a commentary of St.

    Augustine, the Pope pointed out

that for St. Peter, belief came first, and enabled him to understand. He does not say we haveunderstood and then we believed, but we believed and then weunderstood. We have believed inorder to be able to understand.Pope Benedict XVI told this on

August 26 during Sunday Angelusaudience reflections on the 6thchapter of St. Johns Gospel.
