LARGER MEMBERSHIPFOR HIGHER REVENUE

Membership sales are an important revenue stream for the Club. Sales of our membership have tapered off over the last two years. To boost sales, we have recently launched a promotion that gives every new sign-up a whopping $3,000 in spending credits and members who refer their friends to join the Club each receives a $250 spending credit. I urge all to make use of this special offer to invite their mates to join this family of ours.

It should be plain knowledge by now that these are challenging times and the Club is and has been operating at a deficit. A bigger membership pool will bring in more revenue, firstly from the sales and consequently, an increase in membership subscriptions and F&B earnings.

Existing members need not worry about overcrowding at the Club should there be an influx of new members, as the Club is at only 70% of its full member capacity and there is significant membership attrition every year.

The recent Budget’s various announcements on manpower issues have clear cost impact for the service sector.

The Dependency Ratio Ceiling or the proportion of foreigners on work permits or S passes whom a firm can employ will be cut from 40% to 38% in January next year and to 35% in 2021. The Club has, at present, already maxed out our foreign worker quota.

1

Dependency Ratio Ceiling

So it is timely that we have been working hard to implement a new Club Management System, which can automate certain manual tasks that are currently undertaken by staff, to achieve a leaner and more productive workforce. The system will also incorporate F&B modules that enable customers to self-serve, thereby reducing our reliance on waiting staff, which are mostly non-locals.

This year’s Annual General Meeting will be held on 26 May at Grand Ballroom. I encourage all members to attend the Meeting, a platform for all to raise issues for discussion. The budget for CAPEX items such as Gym equipment and Playroom’s edutainment options will be tabled for members’ approval at the Meeting as well.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all mothers a Happy Mother’s Day.

THE ART OF BALANCINGIn my very young days when cable radio Redifussion was the main mode of entertainment, I was often enthralled by story-tellers of old who regaled listeners with tales of extremely accomplished martial artists who had mastered qinggong. Literally meaning ‘light work’, it is a technique that decreases the practitioners’ body density and enables them to perform gravity-defying moves such as gliding on water surfaces, scaling high walls and flitting about on bamboo groves like dragonflies.

Those of us who are fans of wuxia (a genre of Chinese fiction concerning the adventures of gongfu masters in ancient China) movies would know that the so-called qinggong moves such as those in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon are performed by actors and stuntmen suspending themselves from wires.

In real life, the closest I have come to performing qinggong was balancing with one leg on three or more claypots stacked one on top of another as part of my training in martial arts. The move was hardly qinggong, of course, but more of a balancing act.

The art of balancing is an essential life (survival!) skill. Regrettably, there are no 101 manuals that can advise the Club Management on how to please every one of our 8,000 account holders (or nearly 17,000 members) and still leave room for us to consider the greater good of the Club. Still, we strive hard to balance the needs of the individuals against those of the organisation.

We recently purchased a new spinner bike for the Gym. It comes with the latest features, including a technique-measuring system with live visual feedback on how the rider is applying force throughout the pedal stroke so that he or she can make immediate improvements to the exercise. The spinner bike is a boon to the many members who appreciate it. On the other hand, there was one member who was very vociferous in pronouncing it a white elephant simply because he did not see many members using it. This is contrary to our observations. We just have to bear in mind that one man’s dislike can be other members’ delight.

Members had repeatedly suggested at past AGMs to capitalise on our under-utilised facilities and spaces to bring in additional income for the Club. And so we recently worked with a company that was interested in booking

during off-peak hours all four of our Squash Courts for a short season. The original deal would have brought the Club a cool five-figure revenue but we were not able to close it because we wanted to give consideration for the occasional use of one of the courts by one member. Determining the right balance—in this case, to pit monetary gains for the Club against a single member’s use of the facility—may appear easy but it never is and never will be.

At the coming AGM on 26 May at Grand Ballroom, members will have the opportunity to assess a proposal to lease available spaces to a well-known children’s learning centre for the operation of a preschool cum childcare centre, and balance their individual needs against the Club’s. If the proposal is approved by members at AGM, members’ children will enjoy a discounted rate for the lessons. To accommodate this new potential tenant, though, we must re-site some of the facilities within the Sports Centre to a higher floor and install a lift. The school is looking at leasing the spaces long-term, giving the Club a revenue of nearly $3 million. We will be organising a town hall meeting before AGM to provide members with more information.

Making decisions collectively as a Club body is not going to be breezy like a qinggong master flitting about on bamboo groves. It will be more like a balancing act, taking into account hard facts, little inconveniences, investments and long-term gains. A paradigm shift may be needed.
