My Career Choices and Lessons Learned

“Life often takes us down unexpected paths. When I was in high school, in a rural town in Oklahoma, the biggest

dream I had was to go to Oklahoma State University. I never would have expected to become an engineer, or to

be a Visiting Professor at Stanford University, or to be a faculty member at the United States Naval Academy, or

ride in an F15, or spend the day underwater in a 688-class attack submarine, or spend two years as the Assistant

Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development, and Acquisition with an annual budget of nearly $60 billion

dollars. All of these opportunities, and many more, came through unexpected choices – not because of careful

planning. In this presentation I will share information about some of my unexpected opportunities, and how to

prepare yourself for the ones that will come your way. I will also share some of the many lessons I have learned

along the way!” ⎯ Dr. Delores M. Etter

Speaker Prof. Marc P. Christensen, Southern Methodist University

Description The performance of traditional imaging systems is limited by the size of the collection aperture of their optics; large lenses form sharp low noise images. The need for pervasive imaging drives us towards smaller imaging platforms that can be mounted on miniature unmanned vehicles and soldiers’ helmets. Such constrained platforms limit the size of optical systems and hinder their performance. Computational imaging seeks to overcome these limitations through the co-design of constrained optical systems and computational algorithms that reconstruct high fidelity imagery. This talk will briefly review the field of computational imaging and describe a number of ongoing projects at the photonic architectures laboratory at SMU.

Speaker Bio Prof. Christensen received the B.S. in Engineering Physics from Cornell University and the M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from George Mason University. From 1991-1998 he was a staff member and technical leader in BDM’s Sensors and Photonics group (now part of Northrop Grumman). In 1997, he co-founded Applied Photonics: a free-space optical interconnection module company. His responsibilities included hardware demonstration for the DARPA MTO FAST-Net, VIVACE, and ACTIVE-EYES programs, each of which incorporated precision optics, micro-optoelectronic arrays, and micro-mechanical arrays into large system level demonstrations. In 2002, he joined Southern Methodist University where he is currently the Chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering. Dr. Christensen is currently serving as Topical Editor in Imaging Science for the Journal of the Optical Society (A). He is member of the Optical Society of America and a senior member of the IEEE Communications and Lasers and Electro-optics Societies.

Speaker GUENTER W. GROSS, Ph.D.

Speaker Bio Dr. Gross completed his undergraduate training in engineering at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1962. After five years as a pilot with the United States Air Force, which included one year in Vietnam as a Forward Air Controller, he entered graduate training at Florida State University and received the Ph.D. in biophysics and neurophysiology in 1973. Postdoctoral training was obtained with the Experimental Neuropathology Section of the Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry in Munich. From 1978 to 1965 he was an assistant, and then associate professor with the Department of Biology at the Texas Woman's University. In August of 1985, he joined the Department of Biological Sciences at University of North Texas.

Dr. Gross founded the UNT Center for Network Neuroscience in January 1988 and has been the director of the CNNS since that time. He was promoted to Professor of Biology with the specialty in neuroscience in September 1988 and to Regents Professor in 1996. Dr. Gross is interested in information processing in the brain with emphasis on pattern processing in small networks and the self-organization and internal dynamics of networks in cell culture derived from the mammalian central nervous system. Dr. Gross has pioneered the development of substrate integrated thin film microelectrode arrays for use in cell culture and has systematically applied this technique to the simultaneous, long-term monitoring of neuronal activity in cultured networks and to the design and fabrication of new life-support systems for long-term maintenance of cultures during recording and optical monitoring. He has shown that neuronal monolayers in culture are pharmacologically histiotypic and retain many characteristics of the parent tissue after months in culture. These efforts have led to new applications in the areas of pharmacology, toxicology, and drug development and to the design of rapid, high throughput multi-network platforms. Dr. Gross has published 121 research articles and presented a total of 108 invited seminars

Topic/Title Semiconductor’s Role in the Emerging Smart Grid

Date Friday, 30 October 2009

Time Lunch 1130 AM / Program 1215 – 100 PM.

Location Texas Instruments South Campus, Conf Rms S1,S2 (Behind South Lobby at southeastern most-entrance)

12500 TI Blvd, Dallas, TX 752423 Cover Lunch $10; Talk free.

Speaker Dr. Don Shaver, TI Fellow and Director Communications and Medical Systems Laboratory DSP Solutions R&D Center, Texas Instruments, Dallas

Description “The term ‘Smart Grid’ refers to a modernization of the electricity delivery system so it monitors, protects and automatically optimizes the operation of its interconnected elements – from the central and distributed generator through the high-voltage network and distribution system, to industrial users and building automation systems, to energy storage installations and to end-use consumers and their thermostats, electric vehicles, appliances and other household devices. The Smart Grid will be characterized by a two-way flow of electricity and information to create an automated, widely distributed energy delivery network. It incorporates into the grid the benefits of distributed computing and communications to deliver real-time information and enable the near-instantaneous balance of supply and demand at the device level.” [1] Even before the NIST standardization initiative, utilities have been deploying smart grid components worldwide based on a variety of communications networks and smart meters towards an automated metering infrastructure (AMI). The plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) is also an important future use case of the smart grid. Semiconductors play a key role throughout the smart grid, but in particular in smart meters (metrology) and in the associated communications technology. This talk will focus on PHY/MAC communications standards and approaches which have an impact on the AMI and PEV worldwide. This presentation will provide an overview of power line and wireless communications semiconductor technology relevant to the smart grid.

Networking Speaker: Title/Topic: Networking

Speaker: Maura Schreier Fleming, Best At Selling

Technical Speaker: Title/Topic: Telecom's role in a future driven by sustainability needs.

Description: Broadband has a positive impact on the environment. Broadband generates a sustainable society both environmentally and economically. An American Consumer Institute study shows that a wide adoption and broadband usage could reduce the current US 7.9 billion tons of CO2 emissions by 1 billion tons over 10 years. If converted into energy saved, this would constitute 11% of annual US oil imports. In terms of greenhouse gas emissions, the activities below are likely to produce the following benefits:

• Telecommuting will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 248 million tons due to less driving, 28 million tons due to reduced office construction, and 312 million tons because of energy saved by businesses

• Teleconferencing could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 200 million tons, if 10% of airline travel could be replaced by teleconferencing over the next 10 years

• Reduction in first-class mail, office paper from emails and electronic documents, and plastics saved from downloading music/video could reduce emissions by 67 million tons. For example, shifting newspaper subscriptions from physical to online media alone will save 57 million tons of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions over the next 10 years.

Speaker: Ali Shah, Director of Broadband Solutions, Ericsson North America

Speaker Bio: Ali Shah is a Director of Broadband Solutions in the Strategy and Marketing Organization in Ericsson North America. He has been with Ericsson for 14 years. He has been engaged in the strategy for mobile broadband solutions since 2007. Prior to his current position, he was the Director of RF Engineering Services in Ericsson. In this role, he led an organization engaged in GSM/EDGE as well as WCDMA/HSPA deployment for Ericsson’s customers in North America. He received his doctorate from the George Mason University School of Information Technology in Virginia in 1996. He holds multiple patents related to Radio Access Networks.

Calls for Papers

Preliminary Call For Papers released for fourth IEEE International Conference on RFID (IEEE RFID 2010)

Since the DFW metroplex is a hub of RFID activity, the conference organizers for IEEE RFID 2010 invite members of the IEEE Dallas section to consider preparing a technical paper about your most recent, original research on RFID technology.

RFID systems involve many different technology disciplines and application areas represent within the various Technical Societies in Dallas. Just some of those topics are mentioned in the Preliminary Call For Papers.

Since the deadline for paper submissions is December 7, it is now a fast track to prepare a well-written and succinct technical paper that describes research to address a significant technology or system problem, the innovative research methodology or approaches undertaken as well as the potential impact of the results.

IEEE members can access the conference website at www.ieee-rfid.org/2010 to review the Call For Papers and other information about the conference, which will be held at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida USA on April 14-15, 2010.

The conference is being sponsored and planned through the newly-formed IEEE Technical Conference on RFID (CRFID) chaired by Paul Hartmann, VP of Engineering at RF SAW in Richardson. Other local individuals involved with the conference include Merrily Hartmann, Local Arrangements/Registration Chair; Brian Fraser, Publicity Chair; and Daniel Engels, member of the CRFID Board, who was General Chair of IEEE RFID 2009.

Once again, the conference organizers are seeking the highest quality technical papers, selected for the excellence of both the writing/presentation and the technical merit of the research. All papers will be peer-reviewed by an outstanding Technical Program Committee, which will be chaired this year by Dr. Daniel D. Deavours, Research Assistant Professor, Information & Telecommunications Technologies Center, University of Kansas, where he is also Director of the RFID Alliance Lab.

The Call For Papers explains the conference subject matter, topic areas, 8-page paper limit, deadlines, submission instructions and other important information for submitting authors. However, if you have questions related to topics or paper submission, you can contact Dr. Deavours at [email protected]

Additional details (such as keynote speakers, panels, schedule, venue) will be added to the conference website as they are developed. Bookmark the site url and check it regularly. In addition, we will send you updates with conference news to those, like you, who are interested in the current state of advanced RFID technology research and implementation.

We look forward to your participation – as presenters or attendees – at IEEE RFID 2010. We also invite you to forward this information to others you know, in academia or industry, who would be interested in this conference.
