Site, climate and surrounding

Faro The course will be held at the University of Algarve in Faro and at Marine Aquaculture Station of INRB, I.P/L-IPIMAR in Olhão. Both locations are sited in the Eastern region of Algarve, South Portugal, and 300 km from Lisbon. Faro is the capital of Algarve region. The Ria Formosa lagoon attracted human occupants from the Palaeolithic age until the end of

pre-history. During that time a settlement grew up - Ossonoba - which was an important town during the period of Roman occupation and, according to historians, the forerunner of present-day Faro. From the 3rd century onwards and during the Visigothic period it was the site of an Episcopal see. With the advent of Moorish rule in the 8th century Ossonoba retained its status as the most important town in the southwest corner of the Iberian Peninsula. In the 9th century it became the capital of a short-lived princedom and was fortified with a ring of defensive walls. At this time the name Santa Maria began to be used instead of Ossonoba. Later on the town was known as Harune, whence its current name, Faro. Its elevation to the status of a city, in 1540, and the transfer in 1577 of the Episcopal which had until that point been located in Silves, were important steps in Faro's history. Its steady, growth and its importance in the regional context were such that it was chosen as capital of the Algarve province at the time of the administrative

reorganisation which took place in the 19th century. The last few decades have made a decisive contribution to Faro's position, injecting new economic life and confirming its vocation as a service centre for the whole of the Algarve. The construction of an international airport on the outskirts of the city in 1965 made Faro a hub for tourist traffic across the region. Other items of infrastructure which have had a positive impact on the economic, social and cultural life of the city are the University of the Algarve and the Conservatório Regional (Music Regional College), both of which have their headquarters in Faro and attract students from the region and from other Portuguese regions, and the district hospital. With its rich artistic heritage and many museums, hotels, restaurants and other facilities, not to mention the many attractions offered by the surrounding area, from the long beaches of Faro, Farol and Culatra Islands to the important Roman ruins at Milreu, Faro is also a city, with a strong vocation for tourism.

Olhão The town of Olhão is essentially and historically linked to the local fishing industry and only grew into existence in the 17th Century. It has about 30,000 inhabitants and was raised to the status of a town in 1808 after 17 local fishermen successfully crossed the Atlantic Ocean without charts in their small fishing boat "Bom Sucesso". Their purpose was to announce to the exiled King of Portugal, Dom João IV, that the French invading armies had been defeated and had returned to France leaving Portugal free for the King to return. It was in this town in 1882 that the first canning factory for tuna and sardines was established. Very soon canning it became the leading industry of the Algarve. One of the Algarve´s main fishing ports, Olhão has square whitewashed houses with flat roof terraces and chimneys that are evocative of Moorish architecture. Behind the parish church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, from the 17th century, the chapel of Nossa Senhora dos Aflitos is where the wives of fishermen gather to pray for their safety when the weather is stormy. But the town´s main attraction is its market, one of the most animated and picturesque of the Algarve, with an enormous variety of seafood but also local farmers selling such products as fruit, honey and live chickens. The Algarve has some of the warmest and sunniest weather in Europe, being a great destination all year round. During the winter the weather is cooler and more rainy, but still with many hours of sunshine and blue skies to enjoy the outdoor life.
