more understandable if we see them as a call of a re-cruiting officer: "And he said to them, Follow me and I will make you fishers of men." Immediately they left their nets and followed him. The fact the responsive fish-ermen did not know who he was gives such enduring ap-peal to the words with which Albert Schweitzer concluded his greatest book: "He comes to us as one unknown, with-out a name, as of old, by the lakeside, he came to those who knew him not. He speaks to us the same word: "Follow thou me," and sets us to the tasks which he has to fulfill for our time. He commands. And to those who obey him, whether they be wise or simple, He will reveal himself in the toils, the conflicts, the sufferings which they shall pass through in his fellowship, and as an ineffable mystery they shall learn in their own experience who he is."

Elton Trueblood, the great Quaker philosopher, likened the church to an army. He said, "If we realize that Christ was organizing a genuine "company" many points im-mediately become quite clear. Herein is the signifi-cance of the cryptic "follow me." He was not advising people to go to church or even to attend a synagogue. He was instead asking for recruits in a company of danger. He was not asking primarily for belief, but for commitment with consequent involve-ment. It is significant that the first of those who answered His call to enlistment fol-lowed him before they knew who he was. The recogni-tion of Christ's true charac-ter in Matthew 16 comes long after the successful ap-peal in Matthew 4. He says the well known words are

I even ap-proach anyone with a Navy cap and ask them where they served; occa-sionally Ill even meet an-other Coral Sea sailor that way. For example, I had gone to the VA Hos-pital at Bay Pines and had on a Coral Sea shirt. The

According to the current Association By-laws, this is the year when revisions can be considered and changes made at the Oct. 2007 reunion in Las Vegas. Please study these and be ready to discuss them at the business meeting. I encourage your input regarding changes to the By-laws because they affect all members of our Association and we all want to make this the best outfit possible. I wish to thank all the members of the Committee for serving and all those Asso-ciation members who have submitted sug-gestions for consideration. I look forward to seeing many of you at the 2007 reunion. Sincerely,

On March 10, we held our 8th annual Florida Spring Fling Mini-Reunion in Venice. The gathering was called to order and followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. After social time, dinner was served at noon. Our caterer, Buffalo Bills, provided a fabulous buffet. We finished it off with the best macaroon cookies youll ever tasteor so my daugh-ter swears. Following dinner each person introduced themselves and shared which division and ship they were on. We had several attendees from the Coral Sea, the Midway, the FDR, the Shangri-La, the Leyte and a couple of old destroyer sailors. We had a diversified group with one common theme: All were sailors! We introduced the guest speaker, Mr. Bill Roy of Naples, FL.. He was on the Yorktown at the Battle of the Coral Sea and was a pho-tographers mate. He pre-sented some great battle photos along with an ac-counting of the Battle of the Coral Sea. As everyone knows, that battle marked the first time the U.S. forces held their ground against the Japanese. The Japanese real-ized they were not up against a weakling. After he finished his talk, he opened it up for questions and answers. We

were grateful he shared his time with us. We had a drawing for some small articles. Lynn and I and Vi and Bud invited everyone back to our house for some more social time. We had a great group of about 65 peo-ple in attendance at the

VFW, with many coming to our house afterward. We dont have a list of atten-dees this year because our faithful secretary, Shirley Collins, has been ill and was unable to attend and keep track. We missed her and Leo dearly this year and wish Shirley better health. We look forward to seeing them next year. We voted to have another Spring Fling next year on March 9 at the VFW Post 8118 in Venice, FL. With this in mind, Id like to thank you

all for attending and extend the invitation to attend next year. Share the news with your friendseven those who served on other ships and maybe in our area. Come one, come all. Sailors and Marines welcomed!

How About Spring 08 in San Diego? In April 2004, we had a mini reunion in San Diego. A total of 72 shipmates and/or family members at-tended. With all the posi-tive comments from our October 2006 reunion in San Diego, Im thinking about another mini for the spring of 08. Like 04, this would be a 2-day affair. Friday would in-clude a visit to a Navy ship or facility (depends who is or is not in port). It would also include a luncheon. Saturday would be open

during the day but the eve-ning would be a dinner, most likely a casual BBQ at a local club, like an Elks, Legion or VFW. A hospitality room Friday and Saturday would be in-cluded. Also, for those that might wish to stay longer, any special room rates would extend to days be-fore and days after the re-union. What I need is an expres-sion of interest. If you think you would attend, let me know. This is not a com-

mitment, just an expression of interest. At Las Vegas I will have a good idea how many are interested and if enough are, I can go out to our Convention and Visi-tors Bureau for hotel bids. You can e-mail me at: [email protected] or call at (858) 452 0161. For e-mail, indicate Coral Sea in the subject field. This will avoid the e-mail going to my Spam files. See you in Las Vegas.

Shipboard Humor To simulate being a sailor at home:

Get up every night around mid-night and have a peanut butter and jelly sand-wich on stale

bread.

by Rom Braun, FT2 1953-1956 A previous article (See the 5th in a series) discussed loading ammunition on the Coral Sea. Have things changed in todays Navy? In an at-tempt to answer that ques-tion, let us review a segment of the process that you may remember. Hanger bay two is the site where the loading of mu-nitions begins, as the deck edge elevator is located there. The small munitions ships arrive and the bombs are the first muni-tions to be brought aboard. Little bombs, middle size bombs and very large bombs are being put on the deck edge elevator. Sailors are everywhere, pushing and pulling bomb carts. The carts with the small bombs are pre-

ferred, as those carts are easier to handle as you move the bombs across the hanger bay. Moving the big bombs was

extremely dif-ficult espe-cially when you had to take them into hanger bay one! Getting that bomb, yes, one bomb per bomb cart, up and over the threshold that made up the

hanger bay door track was very difficult and, in my opinion, a very dangerous operation. You knew it took a considerable amount of energy to set a bomb off with out the

detonator, but none the less you were scared work-ing with this stuff. The big bomb is brought to a small elevator in the hanger bay. That small elevator takes the bomb down to the stor-age area. Finally the bombs are loaded and the storage areas are filled to capacity.

What happens today? That question can be answered by a selection of pictures. Is more ordnance brought aboard today? I would

think so as the require-ment caused by a change in the style of warfare re-quires more sorties and the defense for the ship has changed from three inch and five inch guns to the Phalanx. Things change, even the way the Navy handles ord-nance and the weapons that help in protecting the ship.
