I am thrilled to introduce the Las Vegas Philharmonic’s 2015/2016 season! Over the past year, I have enjoyed getting to know our musicians and in constructing this season’s program, my intention is to celebrate their amazing artistry. We’re expanding the season by adding five matinees, creating a new Spotlight Series that will include three intimate Tuesday night concerts that feature members

of the orchestra, and I’ll be hosting pre-concert lectures for practically every concert. This exciting new season will offer more choices and flexibility, including individual customization of subscription packages. The repertoire is an exhilarating mingling of works that will showcase remarkable soloists and composers while highlighting the depth and prowess of your hometown orchestra. Many of the pieces I’ve chosen for the 2015/2016 season are masterpieces that have never been performed by the Las Vegas Philharmonic and will demonstrate this orchestra’s musical eloquence while taking us all on a magnificent journey. We’re ushering in a new era for your symphony orchestra, and I cannot wait to share it with you.

EMBARK ON A WHIRLWIND FOREIGN AFFAIR with this international smorgasbord selected by Cabrera to showcase the passion and purpose of the composers alongside the skill and vibrancy of every section of the orchestra. Passport to the World pairs familiar works such as Clair de lune, Pomp and Circumstance, and Finlandia with an array of dances, tone poems and ceremonial works by music’s greatest colorists.

THIS CELEBRATORY OPENING NIGHT concert unleashes the symphonic power of two timeless and titanic German masters and matches it with modern day exuberance. This exciting night of music begins with the pulsating and energetic overture, Breakdown, by the young American composer and Rome Prize recipient, Dan Visconti. Emerging artist Andrew Tyson, described by BBC Radio 3 as “a real poet of the piano,” is the soloist for Beethoven’s third piano concerto. The concert concludes in a vivid display of ensemble strength with Brahms’s radiant and triumphant second symphony.

MUSIC THAT ENCAPSULATES TIME AND PLACE features in this evocative program celebrating Jean Sibelius’s 100th birthday. The Finnish composer’s first symphony illustrates his heartfelt tonal palette allowing the listener to experience the glories of his natural world. Samuel Barber’s violin concerto performed with Alexi Kenney–a young artist of uncommon depth, poise and instinct–conjures echoes of the turbulent 1930s. The world premiere of Desert Flight, a sprightly ode to Southern Nevada’s own landscape composed by Principal Trombonist Nathan Tanouye, launches the celebration.

LAS VEGAS PHILHARMONIC’S TRADITIONAL HOLIDAY GATHERING launches the city’s festive season with a family-friendly, fun-filled concert that brings the community together on stage and off. This year’s concerts feature a special screening of the film The Snowman based on the beloved children’s book accompanied by the orchestra performing the beautiful score. In addition, festive favorites including excerpts from The Nutcracker, and the traditional sing-along make this a most merry musical celebration you won’t want to miss!

CONCERTMASTER DE ANN LETOURNEAU TAKES CENTER-STAGE for Brahms’s violin concerto, marking her solo debut under the baton of Music Director, Donato Cabrera. The technically demanding, lyrical concerto shares a gypsy spirit with the Bohemian winds found in Mozart’s “Prague” symphony, written in the Czech city a century earlier. The concert opens with Company, Philip Glass’s arrangement of his String Quartet No. 2 originally composed as a score to a Samuel Beckett poem and marking the orchestra’s first performances of a work by the famed American minimalist.

The Philharmonics’s own Cory Tiffin solos in Leonard Bernstein’s rollicking Prelude, Fugue, and Riffs and Kurt Weill’s suite from his famous Threepenny Opera emulates a 1920s cabaret band. The concert concludes with the grandaddy of all symphonic jazz blends, George Gershwin’s Rhapsody In Blue. Pianist Andrew Armstrong whose performance of the piece with The Symphony Orchestra of the Bulgarian National Radio has been viewed over 1,250,000 times on YouTube, is the guest soloist.

Sparr’s Dreams of the Old Believers tells the tale of a family out of time, living deep in the Siberian taiga and utterly divorced from the 20th century. The concert turns to perhaps the most beloved of all Russian composers, Tchaikovsky, with rising star cellist Oliver Herbert performing the master’s Rococo Variations. Cabrera ends the evening with one of the most recognizable symphonies ever composed, Tchaikovsky’s tragic and hauntingly beautiful Symphony No. 6.

YOUTH CONCERT SERIES ANDYOUNG ARTISTS CONCERTO COMPETITION

Every year, more than 16,000 students stream into Reynolds Hall to see the Las Vegas Philharmonic perform its annual Youth Concert Series. Many of these children are experiencing a live classical concert for the very first time. They watch in wonder as they see the different instruments on stage and hear how the music comes together from sweet melodies played by the violins to bright and exuberant sounds resonating from the brass.

The children are inspired, and it’s at that moment many of them decide which instruments they would like to play. Several of these students go on to compete in the Las Vegas Philharmonic’s Young Artists Concerto Competition. Winners of this competition receive the opportunity to perform on stage with the Las Vegas Philharmonic.

Since the program’s inception 16 years ago, more than 180,000 4th- and 5th-grade students in the Clark County School District have attended the concerts, many of whom come from Title 1/At Risk schools. These concerts are always offered free-of-charge to the schools, with the costs underwritten by the Philharmonic’s generous donors. The organization relies predominately on individual and corporate donations and grants from the community to sustain and expand the program.

The goal is to expand the program over the next three years so that it will include two full weeks of concerts and serve more than 30,000 students per year. Please consider making a gift to support these vital educational programs when you place your subscription order.
