A Year of Successes and Challenges Ahead

July 2013 — Another year is before us. Last year at this time we were gearing up to commence contract negotiations and the 2013 Legislative Session. I am happy to report that the Legislative Session has ended and that public employees in general and law enforcement in particular had great successes. We were able to protect

our ability to collectively bargain, our rights under the Peace Officer Bill of Rights, and our PERS retirement benefit. Additionally, the “More Cops” legislation passed, which will aid the Department in hiring additional officers to help patrol our streets — keeping not only our citizens safe as they go about their day-to-day lives, but all of you as well as you continue to admirably and courageously perform your duties.

This calendar however, causes me to look ahead. And what I see in the upcoming year are additional challenges that we must face together. The first is to get the men and women of this agency a contract. As you know, our contract just expired at the end of June and despite the efforts of our negotiation team, a new deal has not been reached with the Department. While we will continue to try to come to an agreement, this

contract dispute will likely be resolved by an arbitrator. The good news is we have been working hard to prepare for this hearing and will be well prepared for the battle ahead.

Another formidable challenge we are facing is the stance the Department has taken on some recent officer-involved shootings. Rest assured that our legal team is putting great effort into protecting these officers from what we believe would be unjust terminations. As you can imagine, this is an incredibly stressful time for these officers and if you know them, I know they would appreciate hearing from you and knowing they have the full support of the Metro family.

In closing, I ask all of you to keep looking to the future. I know times have been tough recently, what with negotiating contracts in tough times and trying to deal with the ever-changing policies and practices of our agency. However, the LVPPA membership is ever strong and has become increasingly active, which, in turn, allows us to serve you better. Your future and the LVPPA’s are bright as long as we stand together and fight the good fight.

1. What are my health plan deductibles? This calendar year, plan deductibles are $500 for an individual and $1,000 for a family (for MultiPlan “in-network” providers). Effective July 1, 2013.

2. How do I find our “in-network” medical, dental, vision and prescription drug plan providers?

» Visit www.multiplan.com for medical providers.

» Visit www.guardiananytime.com for dental providers.

» Visit www.davisvision.com for vision providers.

» Visit www.caremark.com for drug plan providers.

3. What is the office visit benefit? For regular office visits, the benefit is 100% of eligible expenses for MultiPlan providers. There is a $15 co-pay unless you see a specialist. If you do see a specialist, the co-pay is $30 for MultiPlan providers.

4. Does the plan pay for chiropractic services? Yes.

5. Do I have to preauthorize my non-emergency outpatient surgery/hospital stay? Yes. Contact uMR at (800) 808-4424.

6. Do I need a referral to see a medical specialist? No, your plan allows direct access to a specialist without having to go to a primary care doctor first.

7. Who is considered an “eligible dependent” that I can add to my health plan? Eligible dependents include an eligible employee’s or retiree’s:(a) Legal spouse of the opposite sex who is a legal resident of the united States.(b) Domestic partner, as defined by Nevada law, who is a legal resident of the united States. (c) Children under age 26, including stepchildren, legally adopted children and children under a court-appointed legal guardianship.To add or drop a dependent, contact uMR at (888) 868-1395 or (702) 413-1701.

8. How much do I pay for coverage for each dependent? This answer depends on a few factors. Please contact LVMPD payroll or uMR for a current list of employee contribution rates.
