Christine Feige from the Rotary Club of Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. Christine is on her club’s board of directors and is in town “conventioneering”. Sarnia is just across the river from Port

Huron, MI (Chris Publow country??) Christine graciously donated a crisp $100 bill to the club

for its charitable activities. President Ron observed that her donation will put shoes and socks on

at least 10 kids in our “Happy Feet” program. THANKS, CHRISTINE!

NOTE: to encourage visiting Rotarians to attend our weekly meetings, the board has approved a

“lunch special”. The lunch special is posted on the club’s Facebook page and is good until

12/31/17. The special is that any visiting Rotarian who says they saw the post on the Facebook

page will receive a 20% discount on their lunch.

Karl Maisner hosted two guests today, Jessica Wood and Melissa Nowery, financial advisors

with “WealthWave.com”. Welcome to our club and come back soon.

Cliff Silverstein hosted Hans Gerner. Hans is from Germany but knew Cliff in Hawaii and

when visiting Cliff after Cliff moved to Henderson, decided he liked Henderson and soon moved

here. Welcome, Hans. (Cliff also invited Franz but apparently he couldn’t make it. )

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Fred Fukumoto announced details of our upcoming volunteer project with PBS. We will be

answering phones during their fundraising campaign. The Club needs 16 volunteers (spouses,

teenagers, friends) to answer telephones during VegasPBS' March 2018 fund raiser. We will

meet at their headquarters, 3050 E. Flamingo Road, at 6:30 p.m. on March 13, 2018 (Tuesday).

There we will be trained, fed and asked to answer phones for approximately 2 1/2 - 3 hours. A

sign up sheet will be in the book starting January 22nd. For more information contact Fred

Fukumoto at 425-208-2986 or email [email protected]. The Club has committed $5,000 to

VegasPBS for the Veterans Scholarship and At Risk School programs, President Ron will be

presenting them with a check on-air with a challenge to viewers to match the Club's

contribution.

Tom Martin announced the upcoming “Feed the Homeless” on Wednesday, January 31, 2018, at

Christ Church Episcopal on Maryland Parkway. Be there at 5:00 p.m. We will also be

distributing clothes and hygiene supplies.

Jordana Lane thanked all those who helped at the “Magical Schoolbus” volunteer opportunity at Opportunity Village’s Magical Forest on December 19, 2017, at OV on Oakey Blvd.

Bruce Pope gave a shout out to Eric Colvin for his efforts in organizing our football

“fundraiser”. (Of course, Bruce was a two time winner!). Eric thanked everyone who

participated in the fundraising football pool. We raised a lot of money for our club programs.

Rebecca Collette and Joanne Blystone announced the 7th Annual Philanthropy Leaders Summit

on Friday, February 9, 2018, from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Las Vegas City Hall. Hosted by

Mayor C. Goodman, the keynote speaker is the president of “Newman’s Own Foundation” who

will be talking about “Transformational Philanthropy”. The MC is Punam Mathur (another

illustrious graduate of the Leadership Las Vegas Class of 1990 - use password LLV – all of

whom are famous in their own right! I’ll bet President Ron will give you a big credit if you can

name the two famous, yet humble, members of our club who are also 1990 alumni!)

Karl Maisner announced the next Satellite meeting on Thursday, January 11, 2018 at 6:00 p.m.

at Sierra Gold on 215 and Jones.

Hank Falstad asked that we include some pictures and information about the award winning

robotics team led by Rachel Kuntz, Global Communication and Technology Specialist and FLL

Robotics Coach at Jo Mackey Academy of Leadership and Global Communication. Our club has

supported the robotics team in the past and the team brought their demonstrations to last year’s

Gold Raffle.

RECOGNITIONS

Karl Maisner had no sooner finished his announcement than President Ron confessed that he

had missed Karl’s recent birthday. Karl said not to worry and that he had just spent a quiet

evening at home relaxing in front of the fire enjoying the pleasure of the company of his

beautiful wife and “…feeling no pain”. President Ron hit him with a $100 recognition to make

sure that he felt a “little pain”.

Keith Thomas was asked if he was still going to be involved with the myriad of community

organizations with which he is associated now that he is retired. Keith’s (always) long-winded

response was that it was true that 12/31/17 was his final day of employment but that all that

meant was that he was again unemployed with no visible means of support and is dependent on

his meager stipend from Social Security just to meet the huge demands of the constant Rotary

recognitions and that he will likely soon be forced to stand on street corners and beg for dollar

bills just to be able to participate in the weekly Rotary raffle. Fearful that Keith would continue with his tales of woe, President Ron interrupted him and said he would let him off with no fine if

he would only sit down and be quiet. Silence immediately followed.

Pepe Charles was recognized for his recent holiday trip to Mexico City to visit the palatial estate of his sister. Pepe is much too refined to beg and whine like the previously mentioned Rotarian

and graciously accepted a $100 recognition.

Rick Colvin was also too gracious and refined to beg and whine and accepted a $100 recognition

for his recent hunting exploits which involved guns, rabbits, pheasants, and a trip to South

Dakota. No mention was made whether or not any animals were actually harmed during the trip.

However, knowing the gentle nature of Rick, it is likely that the animal population in South

Dakota remains undiminished (of course, it could be that “gentle nature” can be interpreted as

“lousy shot”.)

DRAWING

Shawn Callahan was the big winner today. The controversy from the previous meeting

resulting from the fact that the winner of one of the “table pots” had “scooted” and left her ticket

by her plate was resolved when her table mate who had collected the $7 prize and said he would

be sure to deliver it to her the next time he sees her, actually pulled out a wad of dollar bills

during today’s meeting and actually delivered them to her, thus meeting the first tenet of the Four

Way test…”A Scout is trustworthy”. Oops, wrong organization. Oh well, once a scout, always a

scout. Of course, the fact that Jordana’s table mates from the previous meeting, Karl, Mark, Cliff,

Scott, and Sean, had all said they would be sure to follow up next meeting, probably played a

small part in the scout’s wise decision to hand over the dough.

JOKE OF THE DAY

Something about a gun purchase. Cashier tells the buyer “Strip down, facing me.” Obedient

buyer. Horrified clerk. Clerk says “I meant your credit card”.

TODAY’S SPEAKER: Today’s speaker was Jocelyn Bluitt-Fisher, Senior Neighborhood

Outreach Specialist for the Office of Community Services for the City of Las Vegas talking about

the “Corridor of Hope”.

The city of Las Vegas is working with service providers, faith groups and other community

partners to bring needed services to help our homeless population get off the streets and gain

employment, housing and the skills they need to renter society.

The city is focused on the Homeless Connect 365 Courtyard, a starting point where homeless

individuals can go to access resources all in one place within the Corridor of Hope at 1401 Las

Vegas Blvd. North. Currently the Courtyard is open Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Get help by calling 702-229-4273 or [email protected].

By offering a one-stop shop with access to medical, housing and employment services through a

variety partners, the cycle of homelessness can be broken, as shown in this video. In March

2018, the city expects to launch the next phase of the Courtyard, adding additional services.
