Jones won his ninth title in a little over two seasons, knock- ing off Wes Malott, 222-221, to squeak out a win in the 2006 Ace Hardware Championship at Freeway Lanes of Wickliffe. Jones struck six consecutive times in frames 4-9 to take the lead and needed a double in the 10th frame to shut out Malott. Jones, however, left a 7-10 split and opened, the same split Malott left in the 7th frame to give Jones the lead. Malott then needed a strike with his first ball in the 10th to win, but a 9-pin forced him to Nine is Fine strike for the tie. He got nine on his last shot, however, letting Jones escape with a one-pin win. “I have mixed emotions. Wes is my roommate and one of my best friends on Tour, and you never want to win that way,” said Jones (Simpsonville, S.C.). “That right lane was tricky and fortunately I had lane choice so (Malott) had to finish on that lane. He got a bad break on his first shot (in the 10th), made a move and threw a good shot, but he just didn’t get the break.” Jones, who has won four titles in each of the last two sea- sons, denied Malott the chance to win back-to-back titles for the first time in his career. The 28-year-old advanced to the title match with a 226-216 win over Walter Ray Williams Jr. The PBA Hall of Famer held a one-pin lead after six frames before chopping the 4-8 to give Jones the lead. Jones could have shut Williams out with a double in the 10th, but he left a 4-pin giving Williams the opportunity to double to win the match. Wil- liams left an 8-pin with his first shot, however, giving Jones his first-ever win on TV against the Tour’s all-time title holder. Malott advanced to the title match with a 257-202 win over Ryan Shafer. Last week’s Dis- cover® Card Windy City Clas- sic winner struck in five of the first six frames, while Shafer failed to strike in frames 6-9, in- cluding an open in the 7th. Jones earned $25,000 while Malott (Argyle, Texas) took home $13,000 for second. Will- iams (Ocala, Fla.) earned $6,500 for third and Shafer (Horseheads, N.Y.) earned $5,500 for fourth. Rick and FitzsimondsSST Champs at Fantasy Lanes

INDIO—What great tournament! Thanks so much to GeneralManager Mr. Doug Schmid, Tournament director Mr. Bobby Haddoxand to all the staff for their hard work.

On December 2 & 3, 2006 the Super Senior Tour was at FantasyLanes. Fantasy Resort and Casino added $2,000.00 to the SSTprize fund and after expenses, the bowlers received $137.30 returnon their $135.00 entry fee… wow! We had 38 super seniors, paid13 places with $1,000.00 first and 10 to the finals. In the juniordivision there were 28 players, we paid 9 places with $1,000.00first and 8 to the finals for a total of 66 entries.

In the Senior Division, after 10 games of qualifying, DennisFitzsimonds was in the lead ahead of Vaughn Doody by only 51pins. With ten games to go Dennis won six of his ten matches whileDoody beat seven players, but it wasn’t enough. Dennis continuedto score big, increasing his lead to 90 pins to win $1,000 and the lastSenior Title for 2006. Doody won $700.00 for second place. Den-nis would like to thank Fantasy Lanes for their generous supportand great hospitality.

In the Junior Division Mike Rick decided he had waited longenough after winning his last SST Title in 2004. Going into thefinals with eight games to go, he was ahead of Mark Dyer by only39 pins. Rick and Dyer each won four of their eight games in matchplay, but Rick only gave up three pins. Kevin Gannon was trailingby 130 and made an impressive effort to catch up to the leader bywinnings six games in match play, but it wasn’t enough. He placedthird, trailing Rick by 51 pins. Mike won $1,000 and would like tothank Corky Demaio for drilling his equipment.

In the King of the Hill Match, Mike Rick had the first nine(thought he was going to have another 300 game), but he stuck aseven pin for a 279. Dennis had a 204.

MISSION HILLS — MissionHills Bowl was the host and a greattime was had in the Classy Cen-ter. Much excitement, great foodand more, made the event memo-rable.

Joseph Micheri Jr. was on hisgame and he put on a spectacularperformance winning his secondABTA Title as he finally downedupstart Vuong Do in the title tobe our latest champion.

Our return to Mission saw 203entrants enter and produce nicecut scores of +72 (men) and + 12for our ladies to make it to thesemis of 49 Bowlers. Also addedwere Super Seniors Vince Russell,Ely Cruz, and Josie Matsumoto.

Leading the Semis was a hotJoseph Micheri at +118. He wouldsit out and bowl for the title. Notfar behind was Vuong Do at +10.He would enter in round two ofthe single elims (top 16). It tooka +36 to make the sweet 16 singleelims finals, and that included 4women.

The bowlers took to the lanes. In the first round single elims los-ing were Racquel Vergara, ClaudeDottin, Tommy Newman, WesStaley, Anthony Nunnery, TomLicauco, and Tom McNaughton. They got checks of $105 in 10-16th place.

In round two being eliminatedwere Jun Tumacay, Jamie Rouner,Roland “Pacquio” Suase, and BenMasteran in 6-9th places and $110each.

Round three had J. T. Jacksonstrike often downing a gameTomekia Lemons 257-195.Vuong Do likewise downing Ms.True Carr 256-169. Two of our

fine ladies Tomekia and True were4th and 5th at Mission and $115each.

Now, two of our regulars J. T.Jackson and Vuong Do would meet, with the winner to advance tobowl for the title. Vuong had adouble, and turkey en route to a201-169 win over a tapped J. T.and off to the title game vs. Jo-seph Micheri Jr. with J.T. in 3rdat Mission with a great showing.

The title game was set and thehorses were paid! Vuong returned$29 for everyone who had him atthe $5.00 fun bets.

We would see who would be-come the latest Champion. Josephelected to have Vuong lead off.He did, with a double, and Josephanswered with a turkey, a spareand another double. After Vuonghad a open in the 7th, Josephmaintained a lead throughout asneither could double again. Josephhad title #2 and deservedly so in a244-221 win. A great performanceby a great guy, a fine bowler, andtitle #2 was well-deserved!Congrats Joseph!

Great bowling also by VuongDo, a Champion who could havewon again on this night.! He isalso a fine bowler and fine youngman. Great bowling Vuong!. Thesame to J. T. Jackson in third,Tomekia Lemons and True Carrlikewise.

Tourney Hi Qualifiers wereTim Klepper at +120 for the menand Tomekia Lemons led the la-dies at +87. They will get paidentries.

Sweetness quote of the week: How did it happen that their lipscame together? How does it happen that birds sing, that snow melts, that the rose unfolds, that the dawn whitens behind the stark shapesof trees on the quivering summit of the hill? A kiss, and all was said.

National Deaf Bowling NewsCouple of 864 Led Record HighScoring Deaf Travel at Del Rio

by Connie MarchioneDOWNEY—For the 2nd consecutive session, So. Calif. Deaf

Traveling league had all 6 teams scoring 2000 series. This time atDel Rio Bowl last Sunday the bowlers again broke last session’srecord by averaging 180.6 per bowler. Riverside scored the seasonhigh 660 team game with Ed Abakumoff’s 275 taking the seasonhigh game.

In a rare tie for honor roll leader, both Darrell Stogryn (245-185-244-190) and Andy Lorenzo (244-237-202-181) rolled the same864 series. Three others also hit 800s, Abakumoff 150-213-275-206/844, Dan Flores 199-213-235-193/840 and Bob Jones 218-225-214-172/829. Also

6 others with 700s and better made the roll list. Pablo Yoma 217-211/777, Francisco Navarro 226/763, Rick Pennington 243/758,Gardy Rodgers 243/742, Don Millwee 199/719 and ConnieMarchione 203/718.

In the last session’s position round match League leader SouthBay beat Riverside 14 to 6 for its 6th consecutive double digit winto stretch its lead to 29 points. Ironically the regular schedule at DelRio had both teams facing each other again and this time Riversidedid a complete 180-degree reversal, handing South Bay it first doubledigit loss, 17 to 3. Riverside with Lorenzo’s 864 and Abakumoff’s844 swept all its 4 games with 545-574-660-578 for the day’s highteam series 2355 (41 pins short of South Bay’s season high teamseries). Although it lost all its games South Bay hit over its teamaverage with 2154.

Abakumoff’s 275, Lorenzo’s 202 and Emad Aranki’s 181 madeup Riverside’s high league team game 660 replacing South Bay’s639. In his 275 game, Abakumoff started with 7 strikes in row andhit light in 8th frame leaving 2-4-6-8 bucket, spared and struck in9th and two times in 10th, then got a ten pin tap on final ball.

In other games, S F Valley scored 2118 with Jones’ 829 andMarchione’s 719 beating Navarro’s Los Angeles (2008) 14 to 6 tomove up to 3rd place. Dan Flores and Rodgers helped their Holly-wood to 2208 and beat Stogryn and Millwee’s El Camino Village’s2181 for a 11.5 to 8.5 win to stay in 4th place.

In close first game sidepot action Stogryn’s 245 bested Lorenzo’s244 and Pennington’s 243. Second game went to Lorenzo’s 237 andAbalumoff easily won the third game.

Navarro’s 226 took the 4th game and Stogryn and Lorenzo spliton the high series.

The league thanks the host Del Rio’s manager Mike Cammaratafor the good scoring condition. Next travel date is December 17 atBrunswick Covina Bowl in which leader South Bay will face Holly-wood, Riverside goes against S F Valley and El Camino Village battleLos Angeles.

Win Titles at JSTYORBA LINDA—November

26th found JST at Yorba Linda bowlfor their 5th tournament. Theshot was a tough one, using theoil pattern from the 2003 USOpen assured there was not goingto be any run away in scoring andthat you had to make a good shotto be rewarded. Every one waswarned at the beginning of thetournament, don’t try and swingthe ball. But at the same time alot didn’t listen. The turn out waslow being thanksgiving weekendand being bowlers knew it was go-ing to be a difficult shot so thereare some that didn’t come becauseof that. But there were somebowlers that rose to the occasion.

In the novice divisions is justwhere that happened. Allen Eppanshowed he loves to bowl. Thisbeing Allen’s first tournament, hecarries an 84 average on the houseshot but at this tournament Allenaveraged 23 pins higher over sixgames with a 107 average, with ahigh game of 155 scratch. Allenwon the division over Eric Yuwho also bowled very well com-ing in 2nd to Allen’s 1069 withhdcp Eric’s total was 946.

In the intermediate division itfound Lesliann Katsura givingeveryone a run for the money.Lesliann lead the tournament go-ing into match play with an –196,low to make the cut was –298Richard Martin. Lesliann had highseries and Greggory Martin rolledhigh game of 223. In match playLesliann held on to the first posi-tion by winning 2 out of 3 matches,Chris Bassett moved into 2nd andSteven Bojorquez moved into 3rspot for the roll off. Chris def.Steve 236 to 164, this movedChris up to meet Lesliann theleader for the championshipmatch and again Chris rolled a nice173 to def Lesliann’s 157. Thisgives Chris back-to-back wins andnow he will be looking to bowlthe advance division.

The advance division had thelargest number of bowlers andended up with a very strong girlscontention bowling strong.Caycee Landers lead going intomatch play at +2 low to make cutwas –208 Marty Coyazo. 2nd wasJaimie Ferry, 3rd. Natalie Jimenez,4th Arisha Piper, 5th Daniel Ploner,6th Zack Hattori and 7th StevenMaida. Caycee had high series, andJaime shot the high game of quali-fying with 227. At the end ofmatch play the top 4 going to theroll off were Jaime Ferry in 1st

position, Caycee Landers in 2nd,Daniel Ploner in 3rd, and NatalieJimenez in the number 4 spot.Daniel rolled a 220 to def Natalie’s154, but then Caycee rolled a 194to defeat Daniel’s 179. Thisbrought Caycee up to meet Jaimefor the championship, with Jaimerolling a 187 to def Caycee’s 138.

The open division foundNathan Urrutia leading going intomatch play at +59 with DevinBidwell the cut at –92. Nathannot only had the high series healso had the high game of qualify-ing with a 253. The rest of thefield going into match play hadSamantha Jimenez in 2nd spot,Krystal Alvarado in the #3 spotCharlie Hair in 4th and JeremeyGlover in 5th.

After match play will still findNathan in the #1 spot withKrystal Alvarado in #2 andJeremey Glover in the 3rd spot.Krystal was able to hold off Jer-emy with a 181 over 143, but thenit turned around on Krystal withNathan rolling a 193 to defKrystal’s 147.

It is real sad that this will bethe end of the difficult shots. Hav-ing these hard shots was done inan effort to help prepare thebowlers for the future and theNational Gold Tournament. Butafter the attitudes and then thevandalism that was displayed Ihave no alternative but to cancelthe future hard shot oil patterns.Secondly the coaches, Lenni andI are not baby sitters and do notplan to be. However with the at-titudes that of late have been get-ting worse and worse I have alsodecided to cancel the December10th tournament at KeystoneLanes. You will receive a letteraround the first of the New Yearas to the future of the JST tourand tournaments. I would hopethat someone will step up and ad-mit that they did the vandalismor they lead us to who did. Itshouldn’t be the JST scholarshipfund that bears the blunt of therepairs.

We wish all of you that aregoing to Vegas the best. For everyone have a Merry Christmas andVery Safe New Year.
