    ABSTRACT

Surface micro texturing has found various applications in fields of metal cutting, tribology, biomedical engineering etc. Many of these applications are material specific and include materialslike polymers & ceramics. Limitations in conventional processes like μ-EDM and LASER ablationare requirement of conductive electrode and work piece and complex process control mechanismsinvolved respectively.

This paper introduces Laser induced plasma micromachining (LIPMM) , a multimaterial tool-lessmicromachining process which offers superior machining characteristics while preservingresolution and accuracy. It uses an ultra-short tightly focused laser irradiation to generate plasmathrough laser induced dielectric breakdown. The plasma generated absorbs energy and facilitatesmaterial removal through plasma matter interaction spot through melting and vaporization. This

paper discuss the underlying principle of plasma generation through laser induced dielectric breakdown and machining, and also based on the underlying principles , to present a procedureand experimental setup for plasma generation and machining . The main benefits of the processare micromachining with low subsurface damage, smaller HAZ and low roughness.
