means): This day I have perfected for you your religion

and completed My favor upon you and have approved for

you Islam as religion. [Al-Midah, 5: 3] Upon hearing

this glorious Ayah, Abu Bakr Al-Siddq3

    (may Allah be

pleased with him) wept. When people asked him about

the reason behind his tears, he said: This is the death

announcement of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah

bless him and grant him peace).

Then, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and

grant him peace) returned from the Farewell Hajj, and

nine days before his death, the last Ayah in the Noble

Quran was revealed (saying what means): And fear a

Day when you will be returned to Allah. Then every soul

will be compensated for what it earned, and they will not

    be treated unjustly. [Al-Baqarah, 2: 281]

The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant

him peace) started to suffer the pain of his fatal illness.

3 Al-Siddq: Surname of Abu Bakr, meaning the Trustful.

Thereupon he said: I want to visit the martyrs of

    Uhud4.

He went to the martyrs of Uhud, and stood before the

graves of the martyrs, and said: O Martyrs of Uhud!Peace be upon you, you are the preceding ones, and by

the Will of Allah, we shall join you, and I, by the Will of

    Allah, shall join you.

On his way back from Uhud the Prophet (may Allah bless

him and grant him peace) cried so His Companions

asked, Why do you cry, O Messenger of Allah? He

said: I miss my brothers,The Companions asked: OMessenger of Allah, are not we your brothers. He said:No, you are my Companions, but my brothers arepeople who would come after me, they would believe inme though have not seen me.

Three days before his death, pain started to become

    severer.

During such period the Messenger of Allah (may Allah

bless him and grant him peace) was being nursed in the

    house of his wife Maymunah.

Thus he said: Gather my wives. And the wives

    assembled.

The noble Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him

peace) asked their leave saying to them: Would you

allow me to be nursed in Aishahs house. They

answered: We allow you, O Messenger of Allah.

The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace)

came out, supported by two men, Abbas bin Abdul-

Mutalib and Ali binAbu Talib, with his feet dragging on

    the ground.

Sadly, it was the first time for the Companions to see

their Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace)

    supported.

The other Companions gathered, solicitously asking,

What is wrong with the Messenger of Allah, what is

wrong with the Messenger of Allah? Then peoplestarted to crowd in the Masjid, which was completely

    filled with the Companions.

There in the room of Lady Aishah, the Messenger of

Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) started

to sweat heavily. Seeing this Lady Aishah said: Truly,

in my life I have never seen anyone sweat thatexcessively.

Then she grasped the hand of the Messenger (may Allah

bless him and grant him peace) and started to wipe the

    sweat with his hands.

But why would she wipe the sweat with his hands, and

    not hers.

Lady Aishah said: Because his hand is more blessedthan mine.

Lady Aishah heard the Messenger (may Allah bless him

and grant him peace) repeating: There is no god but

Allah! Verily, Death has its agonies. There is no god but

Allah! Verily, Death has its agonies.

Pain grew so much severe that the trace of the poisoned

(roasted) sheep offered to him as a gift by a Jewess at

Khaibar appeared. It was so sore that he said to Aishah,

"O 'Aishah! I still feel the pain caused by the food I ate

at Khaibar, and at this time, I feel as if my aorta is beingcut from that poison."

When clamor started to heighten (meaning noise from

inside the Masjid), the Messenger of Allah (may Allah

bless him and grant him peace) asked: What is this?

Lady Aishah replied: O Messenger of Allah, people areworried about you.

Thereupon he said: Carry me to them. He wanted torise but he could not. So he ordered them to pour seven

skins full of water on him to be relieved so that he might

    give some advice to people.

And he kept repeating it, then he said: O people, Fear

Allah in (treating) women, I enjoin you to be good towomen

Then he said: O people, there is a servant whom Allah

has given the choice between this world and what is with

Allah. And He chose what is with Allah."

But none of them understood the servant he meant, for

he meant himself. Allah has given him the choice and he

    chose. All except Abu Bakr.

It was the habit of the Companions that whenever the

Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him

peace) talked, they remained silent that one could hear a

    pin drop.

But when Abu Bakr heard the last words of the

Messenger (may Allah bless him and grant him peace),

he could no longer contain himself, and he uttered loud

laments. He interrupted the Messenger (may Allah bless

him and grant him peace) crying out in the middle of the

Masjid: For your sake we sacrifice our fathers, O

Messenger of Allah, for your sake we sacrifice our

mothers, O Messenger of Allah, for your sake wesacrifice our wives, O Messenger of Allah, for your sake

we sacrifice our wealth, O Messenger of Allah.

Abu Bakr kept repeating these words, till people frowned

at him (how could he interrupt the Messenger while he

    was delivering his sermon).

But the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and

grant him peace) said: O people, none of you had done

us a favor, but we have rewarded him, except for AbuBakr, I could not reward him, thus I left his reward to

Allah, the Exalted and Ever-Majestic. All doors leading tothe Masjid should be closed, except that of Abu Bakr, should never be closed.

Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and

grant him peace) started to pray for them, uttering his

    last supplications before death:

Saying: May Allah shelter you, may Allah protect you,

may Allah grant you victory, may Allah keep you firm,

may Allah support you, may Allah protect you. Andpeople saying Amen.

His ever last words before he stepped down from the

pulpit were addressed to the nation, saying: O people!

Convey my salam (greetings) to whoever follows mefrom my nation till the Day of Resurrection.

After these words, he was carried again to his house.

While in his house, Abdur-Rahman bin Abu Bakr entered

with Siwak5in his hands, so the Prophet (may Allah bless

him and grant him peace) kept looking at Siwak, unable

to say that he wanted it.

But Lady Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said:

I understood from the looks of his eyes that he wanted

Siwak, so I took it from the mans hand, and chewed itto soften it to the Prophet, then I gave it to him. Thus,

the last thing that entered the Prophets stomach was my

    saliva.

Lady Aishah said about this honor: Among the

Blessings of Allah upon me is that the Prophet died inmy house on the day of my turn while he was leaning on

my chest closer to my neck, and Allah made my saliva

mix with his Saliva at his death.

She also said: So Allah made my saliva mix with hissaliva on his last day on earth and his first day in the

    Hereafter.

Then, his daughter Fatimah entered, but upon entering

she wept. Her tears rolled down because she was

accustomed that whenever she called on the Messenger

of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) he

would rise and kiss her between her eyes, but this time

he could not stand. Whereupon Fatimah said, "What

great distress my father is in!" But he said to her, "Yourfather will have no more distress after today."

He then said to Fatimah: Come closer to me Fatimah.

And he whispered to her something that made her cry

    bitterly.

And again he asked her:Come closer to me Fatimah.

Then he whispered to her something that made her

    laugh joyously.

When she was asked after the death of the Messenger

of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace)

about the secret of her tears and then her laugh, she

answered: The first time, he told me: O Fatimah! I will

die tonight, and so I cried. When he saw my tears hereturned and told me: O Fatimah! You are the first of my

family to join me, and so I laughed.

The last glance the Muslims had of their dear Prophet

(may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was when the

people stood aligned (in rows) for the Fajr (Dawn) prayer.

The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace)

lifted the curtain of his house and started looking at them

and was standing at that time. His face was (glittering)

like a page of the Quran and he smiled cheerfully. The

Companions were about to be distracted from Prayers for

the pleasure of seeing the Prophet (may Allah bless him

and grant him peace); Abu Bakr retreated to join the row

as he thought that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and

grant him peace) would lead the Prayer. But the Prophet

(may Allah bless him and grant him peace) beckoned to

them to complete the Prayer and he let the curtain fall.

At the last moments only Aishah was there with the

Messenger (may Allah bless him and grant him peace)

who said: O Aishah! Come closer to me, and herested against the chest of his wife, Lady Aishah.

The Messenger (may peace be upon him) was reclining

against the chest of his wife and she was leaning over

him and listening to him as he was saying: O Allah!Forgive me, bestow Your Mercy on me, and let me join

    the highest companions(see the Quran 4: 69)

Lady Aishah related: I used to hear (from the Prophet)that no prophet dies till he is given the choice betweenworldly life and the Hereafter. And I heard the Prophet in

his fatal illness saying in a voice that turned husky (the

Ayah that means): With the ones upon whom Allah has

bestowed favor of the prophets, the steadfast affirmers of

truth, the martyrs and the righteous. And excellent arethose as companions.(4: 69) Thereupon I thought that

the Prophet had been given the choice.

Lady Aishah related: He was lifting his hand towards

Heaven and saying: Nay, but The Highest Companion.Nay, but The Highest Companion.

Thus she knew from his words that he was being given

the choice between worldly life and the Highest

Companion, and that the Angel of Death and the Angel

Jibril (Gabriel, peace be upon him) were in the house.

And came the last words that the Prophet (may Allah

bless him and grant him peace) spoke: O Allah! With

    the Highest Companion.

And the soul of Muhammad bin Abdullah come out to the

Contentment of Allah and His Good Pleasure, to a Lord

    well pleased and not angry.

Lady Aishah related: Then the hand of the Prophet

dropped down, and his head grew heavy on my bosom,

here I knew that he has died. She continued, saying: Idid not know what to do, all I did was to come out of my

room to the Masjid, where the Companions weregathered, and I cried: The Messenger of Allah has died,

the Messenger of Allah has died, the Messenger of Allah

    has died.

And the Masjid burst into tears; Ali bin Abu Talib got

paralyzed by the gravity of the news unable to get up,

Uthman bin Afan was like a child, people supporting him

and moving him from side to side while he was mute. As

for Umar bin Al-Khattab he said: If anyone of you says

that he has died, I will strike off his head with my sword,he has rather went to meet His Lord, as Moses went tomeet His Lord.

The firmest among them was Abu Bakr (may Allah be

pleased with him), he went direct to the Prophet (may

Allah bless him and grant him peace), embraced him,

and said: O my closest Companion, O my beloved one,

    O my father.

Then he kissed the Prophet (may Allah bless him and

Fatimah said:O Father! Who answered the Call of his

Lord Who invited him. O Father! Whose Abode is the

Garden of Paradise (Al-Firdaws). O Father! To Jibril weannounce your death!

Abu Bakr then went out to the people and addressed

them saying: Whoever amongst you worshipped

Muhammad, then Muhammad is dead, but whoeverworshipped Allah, Allah is alive and will never die. Allah

says (in the Noble Quran what means): Muhammad isnot but a messenger. [Other] messengers have passedon before him. So if he was to die or be killed, would

you turn back on your heels [to unbelief]? And he whoturns back on his heels will never harm Allah at all; but

Allah will reward the grateful. (Al-Imrn, 3:144)

Ibn Abbas said: By Allah, as if people never knew

before that Allah had revealed this Ayah till Abu Bakr

Umar said: "By Allah as soon as I heard Abu Bakr

when I heard him reciting it did I realize that the Prophet

Anas bin Malik said: On the day (Monday) the

Bilal rose to pronounce the Azan, he rose to honor the

duty that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him

he has to perform four things as a token of that love to

the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace).

    1. Supplicate much blessings upon the Messenger

Muhammad (may Allah bless him and grant him

peace) and his family and Companions, for whoever

invokes blessings on Muhammad (may Allah bless

him and grant him peace) once, Allah will bless him

    ten times:

O Allah! Send Your Salat (Graces, Honours,

Blessings, Mercy, etc.) on Muhammad and on thefamily of Muhammad, as You sent Your Salat onAbraham and on the family of Abraham, for You are

I say these words of mine, and I beg Allah, Blessed and

Exalted is He, to gather us all in the highest Gardens of

Paradise, as Companions of the Prophet Muhammad
