As proud French speakers in the oldest French city in North America, we will be offering an organized academic program with a variety of social, cultural and learning activities. This document will help our students understand the community of which they will be part next summer even though our program will only be offered online in 2021. Quebec City is known for its rich history and its authentic French-Canadian atmosphere. It is the ideal basis to create a unique virtual experience with a qualified and dynamic team.

Let your spirit get out of your head and travel to Quebec City to live a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Saint-Charles-Garnier College is a private High School in Quebec City traditionally known for its high-quality academic programs and humanistic values. The College has an international department that has been offering linguistic programs such as the summer French immersion for over 45 years.

The safety, physical and moral integrity of our students is our #1 priority. That is why the 2021 summer program will be offered online.

The summer program team is an experienced and dynamic group of more than 15 members with different roles and the sole purpose of creating a positive experience for the teenagers participating in our program. This summer, on our virtual campus, we will have: • A direction team (Director, an activity coordinator and a study

coordinator) • A dynamic and motivated team of teachers and monitors (1 per

15 students).

Our staff will be broadcasting the program at Collège Saint-Charles-Garnier’s campus in Québec City.

Teachers will guide you through your Teamwork and be connected during the whole class to answer your questions and see your work.

Get to know other students and practice French with them by accomplishing authentic tasks linked to your interests! Before the beginning of the program, students will select their preferences through an online form. We will assign three Options to each student. No changes will be possible afterwards.

Before the beginning of the program, students will give their preferences among the different Clubs offered by putting them in order through an online form. We will assign a Club to each student. Every week, asynchronous activities will be offered to the students. Some of them will be mandatory and others will be optional. Each student will decide when to do them during the week or weekend depending on his/her own schedule. The mandatory ones (virtual visits, Human 2.0, special conferences, talent show, etc.), will be reviewed by the teachers and monitors on the following days. Regarding the optional activities, the students will have access to a bank of activities about francophony, Quebec’s culture, tourist attractions, etc. Those links will give them the opportunity to discover more about Quebec and to go a bit further

by practicing their French during their freetime or on weekends.

The academic program consists of formal and informal language instruction. Speaking, listening, grammar, current idioms and other skills are taught through the communicative approach and Quebec’s rich cultural context. There is an average of 15 students per class. There are different levels, from total beginners to advanced.

Students will receive the procedure for an online placement test. This test is mandatory for all the participants registered to our program and the results will help us decide on the right group and level of proficiency for you according to various criteria (ability to communicate and understand the language, the lesson plan and level goals and the general level of your group, etc.). The objective is to form homogeneous groups. Therefore, it is important to answer the test without help to be sure it truly represents your real level of French.

During the first two days of the program, the teachers will evaluate informally your speaking level and if a change of group is required, your teacher will inform you of the decision. However, if you consider that you have not been placed in the right level or if you would like to stay in the group you were assigned to, we encourage you to discuss it directly with your teacher. No changes of level or group will be made after the first week of the program.

For everyone’s benefit, you will always have to express yourself in French during the program’s activities. All the staff of Saint-Charles-Garnier College shall adapt to your level when speaking to you. Prizes will be awarded on a weekly basis to the students who have shown a constant effort in French, a positive attitude and a proactive participation in French and Conversation class and during the Teamwork. Winners will be announced on the weekly presentation video and prizes will be sent through mail. Teachers and monitors will also award mentions to students whose attitude, efforts, presence or improvements stood out during the week. Every student receiving a mention during the week will be included in our honor roll and be eligible to our weekly draw to win other prizes. As for the French classes’ prizes, the names of the students on our honor roll we be showed in the following week presentation video.

However, a student who willingly disrupts the other students and makes no effort to speak French could be summoned to meet with a direction team member and risks a disciplinary action suited to the fault. For example, doing extra homework or to be expelled from the activity or from the program. We established a warning system that applies in the cases where the students do not respect the French policy.

To obtain the final certificate, you will have to attend classes, all the synchronous and asynchronous mandatory activities and pass the final exam. Please note that absences and lateness are not tolerated.

Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each mandatory activity. One point will be taken off the final grade for each absence. After two unjustified absences students will meet with a direction team member. If the problem persists, it can lead to the expulsion from the program. Please note that parents are not authorized to exempt their children from the activities.

The final grade displayed in the certificate is calculated as it follows:

• 50% French classes (conversation class, teamwork, quiz, participation, mid-term and final exam).

• 30% Options

• 20% Workshops, Clubs and Well-being activities

Credits for French immersion (Canadian students): our program is not credited. It is your responsibility to verify with your home institution if you can validate and give credits for your participation. We suggest you show them your official certificate, sent by Saint-Charles-Garnier College in September and the lesson plan submitted by your teacher during the program.

The official certificate will have the total number of hours took in French. It will be sent by mail in September 2021.

Please note that we are a high school institution and not a postsecondary institution. For this reason, we do not produce the federal tax slip T-2202 and school fees receipts are not issued at the end of the year for financial purposes. Only students receiving the Explore financial contribution will receive the Releve 1 (provincial) and the T4A tax slips for the contribution received directly by the Explore program in February 2022.

For the effective running of the program, students will be asked to respect certain rules. Discrimination, intimidation and violent or sexual gestures are highly prohibited as consuming or being under the influence of drugs, alcohol or other psychotropic substance during the program’s activities.

During the synchronous activities, the student will need to keep the camera always open and showing an adequate background and we will ask them to use the chat only for academic purposes. Recording sessions is forbidden.

The warning system established give three chances to the student. Every time a student gets a warning, he or she will have to meet a direction team member before being able to continue to attend to the program activities. At the third warning, the student will be expelled from the program. As lateness and absences are not tolerated, they will follow the same warning system. If the student connects late to an activity, he or she will be considered as absent, same thing as if the camera is closed during more than five minutes. One point will be removed from the final grade for each absence. After three absences, the student will be expelled from the program.
