The school held a non-uniform day to raise funds for

Comic Relief. A great effort and £789.84 raised.

Our thanks also go to Elland Road Police Station who

raised £40 for the cause which was added to the

Crawshaw total

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a very pleasant Easter break.

Please spare a thought for our Year 11 and 13 students who will be using this

time to prepare for their rapidly approaching public examinations. As part of

this we will be welcoming identified students into school next week to attend

revision sessions.

Late Start

When the school reopens after the Easter holidays on Tuesday 18th April,

there will be a delayed start for all students. Students are expected to

be in school for registration at 9 a.m.

Any student arriving early due to transport issues will be supervised in the canteen until this time. This is to allow for staff training.

Year 7 Parents’ Evening

Year 7 Parents’ Evening is being held on Thursday 27th April from 5:30 p.m.— 7:30

p.m. The booking system will be available from Monday, 17 April 2017 until

Wednesday, 26 April 2017. If you don’t have access to the internet or are not

comfortable with using this system, then please contact school on 0113 3368540 for

assistance.

Governor Vacancy

to improve the life chances of young people in the area. A skills audit has highlighted the need

to appoint governors with financial, legal or business experience and we would be really

interested to hear from people with this background who may be interested in working with

us. Please telephone the school to arrange an informal conversation with myself so that we

can discuss what the role would entail.

As you are aware, Crawshaw Academy has become a member of the

Red Kite Learning Trust. As such, we need to appoint additional

governors to work on the Crawshaw Academy Governing Body. This

is an opportunity to support the development of the school and

On Wednesday this week staff from the Leeds Apprenticeship Hub came into school to work with Year 11 students who have expressed an interest in apprenticeships. Students took part in a hands on Application Workshop which involved researching opportunities and beginning applications.

On the 12th March, I was presented my Activity

First Aid Certificate (St John Ambulance), in

cadets. The award is valid for three years and

involved 18 hours of training including my

assessment. It is designed to further develop first

aid skills and knowledge up to the same level as

provided by First Aid at Work. This award allows

me to work as an instructor to cadets and gives me

many more opportunities in the squadron that

allows the cadets more activities to attend. During

my contract hours, I learnt many new things that

will help me in the future.

I did an assessment in a major bleed, an unconscious breathing casualty and a unconscious

casualty on which I had to perform CPR. Chloe Rossiter, Year 13.

Boys’ Choir.

Crawshaw’s Boys’ Choir gave their second

performance since they formed earlier this year.

They impressed all of Year 7 with an energetic

performance of Ed Sheeran’s ‘Shape of You’. Well

done to Osam Egharevba, James Parkin, Rodney

Ndombasi, Jack Gill, Jack Hennigan, Jason Robinson

& Ben Mellies. If you are interested in joining the

choir please speak to a member of the music

department – we meet every Friday lunchtime.

DJing and Mix Club

Mr Fearnley’s Mix club was treated to an opportunity

to use analogue equipment, trying some live DJing

using vinyl records and exploring turntables. Students

enjoyed learning about techniques such as

‘scratching’, ‘crossfading’ and ‘filtering’. Mr Fearnley

also demonstrated this to some of Mr Brand’s Year 8

classes who then went on to use the Apple Macs to

mix their own tracks. If you interested in attending

Mix club please speak to Mr Fearnley - they meet

every Tuesday after school from 3-4pm.

Well done and thank-you to all students (and parents)

News Flash

Year 8 Football team won the quarter finals of the Leeds Schools

Cup 4-1 against Cockburn High School.

We are through to the semi-finals. Well done everyone!

With four players missing due to injuries, Crawshaw had only nine fit players on the morning of the game and had to make a late addition with Emre Altinors coming into the side. This proved to be a great addition! Ilkley had travelled to Crawshaw for the Leeds league play-off quarter finals, with a very strong side, dangerous on the counter attack. Crawshaw were crowned champions in the local area league but it wasn’t an easy passage this season. In true Crawshaw fashion the team found themselves 2-0 down within five minutes. They needed to show more than just the skill and talent that had served them so well this season by demonstrating Mr Murtagh's favourite word, ‘RESILIENCE’. Goals from Eddy Firth and Cian Coleman drew Crawshaw level, 2-2, which put a smile on Mr Murtagh and coach Ellie Casper's face. However, it was only briefly as Ilkley scored right before half time to make it 3-2. After some stern words at half time, Crawshaw emerged in the second half determined to get through to the semi final. An equaliser from Noah Wadsworth was richly deserved after an extensive spell of pressure. With ten minutes to go, Cian Coleman popped up with one of the luckiest goals he's scored with the ball bouncing from his knee; putting Crawshaw ahead for the first time in the game. Crawshaw defended brilliantly in the final ten minutes and safely secured a semi final against either Corpus Christi (Mr Murtagh's old school!) or Garforth.

In Geography, Year 7 have been learning about population change by playing the 'Jelly baby game' where a country's population structure changes over time in response to different events. Aimee Dixon managed to reduce one country’s population to 0 after a series of catastrophic events including a war, an outbreak of disease and migration!

On Monday 20th March, we welcomed two professional sportsmen into school to work with a group of Year 9

students. Chris Cook (Olympic Swimmer) and Paul Broadbent (GB Rugby League) spent the day working on the

six keys to success. This is an ongoing programme where students identify the barriers that are preventing them from being successful and supporting them to develop

strategies that they can use to reach their potential. It also works on communication skills and self-awareness

in social situations

During the day on Monday 20th March, we were lucky enough to welcome Steve Greatorex into school to introduce our students to the sport of wheelchair bas-ketball. Great fun was had by all and the sessions were really enjoyable as well as developing a greater awareness of disability and the restrictions it imposes. Two of our students already compete in wheelchair basketball competitions and contrary to belief, anyone can compete in the sport, you do not need to have a disability. We hope to welcome Steve back into school again soon to work with more students.

Family Quiz - GameFace Productions in London.

We’re currently making a Family Quiz show pilot for ITV and we’re looking for families to take part.

We’re looking for families who love quizzing and have a keen interest in general knowledge.

The family members can be any relation but must be made up of three members that span three generations (kids/parents, step-parents, aunts, uncles/grandparents).

The Quiz Show is a pilot so won’t be broadcast on TV but will be a fun day for the family and a look behind the scenes to see how a TV show is made.

We will be doing Skype auditions in the next few weeks and filming will take place outside of school hours in the Easter holidays.

Coin Machines

The Reval machines are already adjusted and

will accept the new £1 coins.
