  • THE URBAN PLAZA Location: Fayetteville, Arkansas

    Program: Streetscape

A new urban plaza gives cohesion and identity to the Fayetteville Arts District while linking three key nodes in the urban fabric.

The plaza expands or contracts to provide larger living rooms and promenades respectively. The urban plaza is created with elements such as a new

surface pattern, lighting system, street furniture, and landscaping elements. A surface pattern of circles trace a path that organizes the whole plaza

from the Walton Arts Centre to the Fayetteville Public Library. This consistent element derived from the existing circle of the amphitheatre brings

about uniformity in the space. Although the pattern is repetitive it responds to the context it passes through. By varying widths, densities and materi-

als, spaces of repose, movements and promenades are created in the system. As the plaza expands, the territory of the street becomes a shared

space. A shared space is one that minimizes the separation between pedestrians and cars by removing all markings from the street. The uncertainty

created because of this different environment will provide cues that behaviour patterns need to be considerate of the shared environment.

At one of the entry nodes to the streetscape the surface

patterns emerge into mounds that create activity within and

movement between. The garden becomes a space that is

vibrant, playful, and interactive. The use of warm or cool

colours infl uence vibrant or calm paths in the garden. The user

is allowed to have a personal living room in a public realm.
