One of my first memories of a property auction dates fromaround ten years ago. I was there with a friend who was theunder-bidder in a lot that went for something in the region of£4 million.

The lot in question consisted of five complete freehold convertedhouses on The Drive in Hove. Such opportunities are incredibly rare buttwo of the houses are particularly special as being amongst the mostattractive in the town. Numbers 63, 65 and 67 The Drive are yellow-bricklike many of the houses that characterise the area, but 69 and 71, whichI adore, are part of a delightful series of red-brick Queen Anne-stylehouses.

If I remember correctly, the lot was previously owned by Mr Hayes ofPanorama Travel. The successful bidder was the Ackermans, a prolificfamily of property investors with a portfolio that once included the

Hanningtons estate. Financialpressures led to the sale of thefive houses separately in recentyears. Nos. 63 and 65 wererapidly refurbished andindividual flats are popping upnow in Austin Gray auctions.67 and 69 went to localproperty magnate Nicholasvan Hoogstraten. 71 wasbought by Claire Taylor who iscarefully renovating it now.

71 The Drive is simplyexquisite – simultaneouslywelcoming and intimidating. Itwas designed by H. B.Measures, a successful Londonarchitect, who also designedthe neighbouring similarproperties. Shared detailsinclude canted bays, orangeterracotta, terrazzo floors,prominent gables andoctagonal pillars. They are byno means identical. Individualdetails were perhaps chosenfrom an architecturalcatalogue.

There are six such buildingson the west side of The Driveand one on the east whichfeatures a hideous Lego-likeextension that is bigger thanthe original structure. It is oneof the worst architectural
