that the soil is black (not red) and

Uganda and protected species that live on the land.

was standing when he took this shot.) We walked

for about 90 minutes to get to this point.

The Railway. There is a railway track

running along the border of the land on

one side of it. Our land is on the left

hand side and pretty much extends for

a couple of miles along the route of the

rail track. It stops about where the

arrow is and Mehta’s Sugar

Plantation/factory starts. Mehta

Squatter (or one of our tenants according

to law) working in the fields and her semi-

permanent structure for which she will no

doubt seek compensation from us if we ask

her to leave. Both sides of this track are our land.

However, to the left as you look at

the picture, it only goes on for abouthalf a mile more.

Another squatter gathering firewood on the land. Sinc

Daddy bought effectively a village, I suppose there

should be no cause for complaint. The squatters get

aggressive if they see a new face there because they

think you are probably the owner come to evict them.

There was a little hostility though on this day because

think they recognised me from previous meetings.

Also, because I didn’t surround myself with policemen

like other eo le, that robabl hel ed.

The division between our land and Mehta’s. His

ours is to the left where nothing economically

beneficial to us is growing. The well kept fields

at the top of the picture are Mehta’s recently

harvested fields.

Another squatter collecting firewood from trees

on the land. One of the other squatters has

planted a number of eucalyptus trees which

take about twenty years to grow. He’ll be

expecting compensation as well as that is an

expensive crop of trees he has planted.

We have two relatively clear

streams running through the

land. They come from an

underground spring

Joseph suggested that, in addition to being

good to grow mahogany, eucalyptus,

sugarcane, coffee, tea and maize, because

of the streams, the land could be good for

fish farming if a two or three large ponds

were sunk on it. Currently there is only one

squatters to ensure that no part of the

land lacks water for agriculture. They’ll

be seeking compensation for these

Some squatters use the earth to make

bricks and sell them on. Problem is that it

depletes the good soil and needs a lot of

firewood. This means trees on the landbeing cut down. However, selling bricks to

make houses is a nice little earner.
