Money; Books are PlentifulCAPITAL REGION – Thanks to your incredible response for our need for books, we have re-ceived a tremendous amount of books within a very short time and will be receiving thousands more from 3 additional book drives in November. As a result, we want to thank you for your generosity, but ask that donations to Books for Troops be given in the form of monetary help in-stead of book donations. $12.50 sends a box of books overseas. However any amount will help. Additionally, Books for Troops will be trying to raise money by having a Bake Sale on Election Day, November 6 from 9am-6pm at the Halfmoon Town Hall. There will be NO book sale at this time due to congestion issues. Instead we will be selling raffle tickets for a 43” Samsung plasma TV. The price will be $5/ticket or $10/3 tickets. Drawing will be held on December 2. If you cannot make the bake sale, you can purchase a ticket for the TV by sending the amount of your ticket(s) to Books for Troops, 152 Oak Brook Commons, and Clifton Park, NY 12065. Checks can be made out to Books for Troops. Please write on the check-- Raffle Tickets. (You will receive a receipt.) To hear how grateful the troops are for these books you can go on line to www.booksfortroopscp.webs.com. (P)

Cohoes Mystery ClubCOHOES – Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, the Cohoes Mystery Book Club will be meeting on November 28, the last Wednesday of the month. The selection is Carolyn Hart’s Ghost at Work, the first in the Bailey Ruth Raeburn series. Bailey is a heavenly sleuth - that is, she is dead, but wants her eternity to be useful. Seems like an unfair advantage, but still, there are rules heavenly helpers must follow. Join us November 28 for either morning (10:30am) or evening (6:30pm) meeting to discuss Bailey. Books are available at the Library. Updates at http://www.cohoespub-liclibrary.org/ (P)

Climbing the corporate lad-der takes time, devotion and ambition. After reaching the top, some profession-als choose to change direc-tions in a phenomenon called “downshifting.”

A 2009 publication from the AARP Public Policy Institute noted that many older work-ers, as they approach retire-ment age, are looking to trade in a higher-paying, demand-ing job for one with more flexibility, less responsibility and lower pay. A study by the University of Michigan for the National Institute on Ag-ing’s Health and Retirement Study found 28.8 percent of males and 24.3 percent of fe-males ages 51 to 55 changed careers after age 50.

In the current economy, this downshifting or career re-assessment can be difficult to come by. That’s because there are many other job-seekers who are interested in any position they can get and will be vying for the lower-paying jobs that some down-shifters may also be seek-ing. In addition, some firms won’t consider applicants whom they deem overquali-fied. Some human resources departments and recruiters simply overlook high-quali-fied applicants because they may assume the skill level also comes with a need for a high salary -- even if this is not the case.

There are others who are willing to take the gamble

Professionals are downshifting careerson a well-qualified applicant. They realize that this oppor-tunity may not come again if the market rebounds.

Those who are looking to downshift may have to change the ways they market themselves. It may not en-tail listing your most notable achievements on your re-sume, but rather selling your-self a little short. Here are some tips you can employ if you’re looking to scale back your job and responsibilities.

* Apply at smaller compa-nies that may not have the staff or resources to promote from within just yet. There’s a good chance your experi-ence and leadership abilities will be prized in such a com-pany.

* Play up your assets, not the positions you have held, on resumes.

* Be honest in your cover let-

ter, letting hiring managers know you are serious about taking a step back in rank.

* Consider freelancing or consulting if you’re having trouble finding a full-time gig. Freelancing lets you set your own hours and pace.

* Find out if you can down-shift in your current com-pany. Some employers will be anxious to keep a good worker and see the benefit in paying a lower salary.

Not everyone is interested in moving up the corporate ladder. Certain individuals

are looking to downsize their jobs to gain more flexibility for family, hobbies and other pursuits.

Albany, NY (October 15, 2012) –Do you have a love for animals and want to support a great local cause? Join with the Goldstein Auto Group and bring your empty bottles and cans to a Goldstein dealership and support the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society’s “Empties For Animals” campaign helps support the mission of the organization, including sheltering, adoption, education, advocacy and the prevention of cruelty to animals. This year’s goal is to raise $125,000, in honor of the Society’s 125th Anniversary. To reach the goal, the Goldstein Auto Group will need to collect more than 1,500,000 cans and bottles. The 2012 "Empties For Animals” campaign has raised over $73,000 thru Sept. 2012, an increase of $17,638 or 33% over the same period last year. The 2011 campaign raised a total of more than $74,000 and col-lected 925,000 cans and bottles. Volunteers sorted all those bottles and cans, based on the originating distributor, which in turn gener-ated $.08 per can or bottle instead of the regular $.05 redemption

fee paid at stores. Monies from the program were used to benefit the more than 6,500 animals cared for by the Society in 2011. “We are very pleased to continue our partnership with the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society and support the 2012 “Empties For Animals” campaign. We would like to thank all of our customers and the members of the community who have generously donated to such a worthy cause,” said Alan Goldstein, President of Goldstein Auto Group.
