The Amazon River is located in Brazil. It empties into the Atlantic Ocean.
The Caribbean Sea is surrounded by Central America, South America, and the Islands of the Caribbean. It is a part of the Atlantic Ocean.

Location:Both nations have large coastlines and populations that rely on the sea for their living. Mexico is part of North America, but Venezuela is part of South America.
Climate:Both Mexico and Venezuela have warm to semi-tropical climates in some parts of their countries. Both are influenced by weather patterns brought into their countries by the oceans.

Natural Resources:OIL (petroleum) is now the chief natural resource for both countries. Venezuela has done a better job of exploiting that natural resource, but Mexico is working hard to catch up.Summary: Mexico and Venezuela are similar in climate and natural resources..

G3b. Compare how the location, climate, and natural resources of Brazil and Cuba affect where people live and how they trade.
Location:Cuba is located about 90 miles from the southern tip of Florida. It is an island nation in The Caribbean Sea. Brazil is the largest country in South America with an extensive coastline touching the Atlantic Ocean where most of it’s people live. Many larger cities are surrounded by Favelas or large slum areas.
Climate:Cuba’s climate is generally warm, mild and semi-tropical. It is often affected by ocean storms and hurricanes. Brazil’s climate is tropical and humid in many locations and warm and mild along the coastline.
Natural Resources:Cuba has limited natural resources. They have nickel, copper and arable land. Brazil has extensive timber resources, as well as, gold and petroleum deposits.

People of European, African and Native American heritage make up the 3 main ethnic groups in Latin America and The Caribbean.
Many of the Europeans that came to the New World in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries forced the native people to work on plantations or in mines. Disease and death followed and most of the natives on the islands were wiped out. However in Central and South America many Native Americans were able to preserve their cultures by moving to remote mountain or forest regions.
In order to get workers, Europeans brought Africans to the New World and forced them to work as slaves. Descendants of European and African mixed race are sometimes referred to as Mulattoes. Mulattoes in Brazil, Panama, and the West Indies are numerous.

European also inter-married with the native people. Those descendants make up a large percentage of the population in some countries. (and are sometimes referred to as Mestizos)Most of the people in Venezuela are mestizos. Their ancestors were both European and Native American.

Most of the languages spoken in Latin America today are based on Spanish or Portuguese because those two European powers did most of the exploring and conquering in Latin America. (since both Spanish and Portuguese are based on the old Latin language of the Romans…..Latin America). The main religion in Latin America and the Caribbean is Roman Catholic. However, the practices of Native Americans and Africans have blended with Roman Catholic beliefs. Unique festivals such as the “Day of the Dead” in Mexico are one result. The Day of the Dead blends Native American beliefs about the afterlife with Roman Catholic beliefs. This holiday coincides with the Catholic All Saints’ Day.

A literate person is one who can read and write. Literacy is a major factor in whether a person is able to get a job and be successful in the workplace. The countries of Latin America have improved the literacy rate of their people. On average, 89 percent of the people in Latin America and the Caribbean are literate. That leaves an illiteracy rate of 11 percent. The standard of living (the “economic level” achieved by a person, family, or country) is often lower in countries where the illiteracy rate is highIn some cultures, it is believed to be more important for boys to have an education than girls. This fact is shown in the fact that 12 percent of girls are illiterate in this region while only 9 percent of boys are illiterate. In some countries, the difference between boys’ and girls’ literacy rates is very large.
One reason that many of the poor cannot learn to read and write is because their communities cannot afford to pay for teachers and schools. Having these basic skills, however, is important. Without the basic skills of reading and writing, workers are stuck in the lowest-paying jobs. Countries with large numbers of illiterate workers cannot build and operate modern industries.
