Carlos formed the famous duo Gardel/Razzano in 1911 and a year later they were joined by Francisco Martino, guitarist and singer. Their repertoire con- sisted of folk songs mostly. Nonetheless, Gardel was called by Columbia to work on his first record- ing. By 1913 the trío hired singer Saúl Salinas who did not last very long; the two additions departed and the National Duo Gardel Razzano was estab- lished. Their debut was at Teatro Royal, in Montevideo. Later they premiered Mi noche Triste, tango (My Sad Night), by Samuel Castriota and Pascual Contursi at the Theatre Empire, Buenos Aires, 1924. Soon after a tour of Mar del Plata was organised and they sung in Montevideo, Brazil and in Spain at the Teatro Apolo in Madrid. On their return to Buenos Aires in 1924 the Duo sung for the last time in Rafaela town, province of Santa Fé, therefore, by 1925 Carlos Gardel was a soloist and performed twice in Spain accompanied by gui- tarists, José Ricardi, Barbieri and Aguilar. Later in 1928 he performed in Paris whilst at the same time continuing to record, afterwards he extended his appearance to Italy and by 1933 he toured again in Italy, Paris, London, Vienna, Berlin and Barcelona and made films for French Paramount in Espérame and La casa es seria with Imperio Argentina also Melodía de Arrabal, and in all these films he worked in collaboration with Lepera and the tan- gos Melodía de Arrabal, Silencio, and Me da Pena Confesarlo were written. Gardel extended his wings to New York and starred in the films Cuesta Abajo, Mi Buenos Aires Querido and Tango in Broadway for the Paramount Pictures and Lepera was the script writer, then he made another two films El día que me Quieras, and Tango Bar, still in collaboration with Lepera. They prepared them- selves for a tour to Central and South America but it never took place because Carlos Gardel, Lepera and his two guitarists died in the Medellín aero- plane crash on 24th June 1935. Alfredo Lepera, (1888-1935) a Brazilian by birth, was a journalist on El Telégrafo newspaper, also a poet, author of theatrical plays and scripts for cine and a theatrical critic. He moved to Paris around 1923 with a theatrical group Sarmiento and after entered the movie industry where he met Carlos Gardel at a summer theatre play. Lepera was then a young man who kept writing lyrics whilst pouring his wine. One of his first tangos was Carrillón de la Merced, also Mi Buenos Aires Querido, (My Dear Buenos Aires), tango, written by Carlos Gardel in 1934 and the lyrics are by Alfredo Lepera which tells us of a porteño who cel- ebrates his return to Buenos Aires by revisiting old places from his youth and is moved when he hears the cries of a bandoneón; being in Buenos Aires meant there will be no more pain or oblivion. STAZO MAYOR TANGO TRÍO The first performance of the trio was at the Metropol Theatre in Vienna, in April 2005, a good place for a tango concert. They paid homage to José “Pepe” Libertella, who was a member of the “Sexteto Mayor” of Luis Stazo. Other Argentine artists joined in, such as Alejandra Matinan and Chicho Frumboli, (tango dan- cers), for she was a member of the Tango Pasión show. The debut of the Stazo Mayor Tango Trío was a complete success and they have kept performing ever since. Luis Stazo is a virtuoso bandoneón player who recruited Coco Nelegatti, guitar, and Kaspar Domke, bassman, two excellent young musicians who play their instruments with power and much ability. LUIS STAZO He was born in Buenos Aires in 1930 and learned to play bando- neon at a very young age. In 1973 he formed the Sexteto Mayor with whom he recorded more than 20 CDs and wrote about 150 arrangements for them. As a composer he is the author of Orgullo Tanguero, No nos veremos más, A Don Julio de Caro and A mi esposa. Sexteto Mayor accompanied the Broad- way productions of Tango Argentino and Tango Pasión. Years later he made a move to Berlin in 2005. KASPAR DOMKE He was born in Brandenburg, Germany, in 1968 and received his first musical training at the age of six. He continued his studies of classical double bass at the University of Berlin Hanns Eisler, and nowadays is a freelance double bass teacher and arranger and lives in Berlin. COCO NELEGATTI He was born in 1959 and grew up in Córdoba, Argentina, but 27 years later moved out to live permanently in Berlin. As a gui- tar man he is hired to play around the world as an arranger of tango productions, such as: “The rose, which I don’t sing,” and he is currently a composer, arranger and player in his own group Quinteto Arrabal.
