ALFREDO LEPERA (1900-1935) (Lyrics)The birth place of Carlos Gardel is uncertain, inany case, one version tells us that his mother Bertaarrived in Argentina in 1893 when the little boywas around two years old and they settled in theneighbourhood of “Abasto.” He left secondaryschool in 1906 for he had decided to sing. Carlosformed the famous duo Gardel/Razzano in 1911and a year later they were joined by FranciscoMartino, guitarist and singer. Their repertoire con-sisted of folk songs mostly. Nonetheless, Gardelwas called by Columbia to work on his first record-ing. By 1913 the trío hired singer Saúl Salinas whodid not last very long; the two additions departedand the National Duo Gardel Razzano was estab-lished. Their debut was at Teatro Royal, inMontevideo. Later they premiered Mi noche Triste,tango (My Sad Night), by Samuel Castriota andPascual Contursi at the Theatre Empire, BuenosAires, 1924. Soon after a tour of Mar del Plata wasorganised and they sung in Montevideo, Brazil andin Spain at the Teatro Apolo in Madrid. On theirreturn to Buenos Aires in 1924 the Duo sung forthe last time in Rafaela town, province of Santa Fé,therefore, by 1925 Carlos Gardel was a soloist andperformed twice in Spain accompanied by gui-tarists, José Ricardi, Barbieri and Aguilar. Later in1928 he performed in Paris whilst at the same timecontinuing to record, afterwards he extended hisappearance to Italy and by 1933 he toured again inItaly, Paris, London, Vienna, Berlin and Barcelonaand made films for French Paramount in Espérameand La casa es seria with Imperio Argentina alsoMelodía de Arrabal, and in all these films heworked in collaboration with Lepera and the tan-gos Melodía de Arrabal, Silencio, and Me da PenaConfesarlo were written. Gardel extended hiswings to New York and starred in the films CuestaAbajo, Mi Buenos Aires Querido and Tango inBroadway for the Paramount Pictures and Leperawas the script writer, then he made another twofilms El día que me Quieras, and Tango Bar, still incollaboration with Lepera. They prepared them-selves for a tour to Central and South America butit never took place because Carlos Gardel, Leperaand his two guitarists died in the Medellín aero-plane crash on 24th June 1935.

Alfredo Lepera, (1888-1935) a Brazilian bybirth, was a journalist on El Telégrafo newspaper,also a poet, author of theatrical plays and scriptsfor cine and a theatrical critic. He moved to Parisaround 1923 with a theatrical group Sarmiento andafter entered the movie industry where he metCarlos Gardel at a summer theatre play. Leperawas then a young man who kept writing lyricswhilst pouring his wine. One of his first tangos wasCarrillón de la Merced, also Mi Buenos AiresQuerido, (My Dear Buenos Aires), tango, writtenby Carlos Gardel in 1934 and the lyrics are byAlfredo Lepera which tells us of a porteño who cel-ebrates his return to Buenos Aires by revisiting oldplaces from his youth and is moved when he hearsthe cries of a bandoneón; being in Buenos Airesmeant there will be no more pain or oblivion.

STAZO MAYORTANGO TRÍO

The first performance of thetrio was at the MetropolTheatre in Vienna, in April2005, a good place for a tangoconcert. They paid homage toJosé “Pepe” Libertella, who wasa member of the “SextetoMayor” of Luis Stazo. OtherArgentine artists joined in, suchas Alejandra Matinan andChicho Frumboli, (tango dan-cers), for she was a member ofthe Tango Pasión show. Thedebut of the Stazo Mayor TangoTrío was a complete success andthey have kept performing eversince. Luis Stazo is a virtuosobandoneón player who recruitedCoco Nelegatti, guitar, andKaspar Domke, bassman, twoexcellent young musicians whoplay their instruments withpower and much ability.

LUIS STAZOHe was born in Buenos Aires in1930 and learned to play bando-neon at a very young age. In1973 he formed the SextetoMayor with whom he recordedmore than 20 CDs and wroteabout 150 arrangements forthem. As a composer he is theauthor of Orgullo Tanguero, Nonos veremos más, A Don Julio deCaro and A mi esposa. SextetoMayor accompanied the Broad-way productions of TangoArgentino and Tango Pasión.Years later he made a move toBerlin in 2005.

KASPAR DOMKEHe was born in Brandenburg,Germany, in 1968 and receivedhis first musical training at theage of six. He continued hisstudies of classical double bassat the University of BerlinHanns Eisler, and nowadays is afreelance double bass teacherand arranger and lives in Berlin.

COCO NELEGATTIHe was born in 1959 and grewup in Córdoba, Argentina, but27 years later moved out to livepermanently in Berlin. As a gui-tar man he is hired to playaround the world as an arrangerof tango productions, such as:“The rose, which I don’t sing,”and he is currently a composer,arranger and player in his owngroup Quinteto Arrabal. He hasrecorded several CDs.
