    WhatdogreatmenlikeBenjaminFranklin,ThomasJefferson,andTheodoreRooseveltallhaveincommon?

    TheyallwereproficientinLatin.

    FromtheMiddleAgesuntilaboutthemiddleofthe20thcentury,LatinwasacentralpartofamansschoolingintheWest.Alongwithlogicandrhetoric,grammar(asLatinwasthenknown)wasincludedaspartoftheTriviumthefoundationofamedievalliberalartseducation.FromLatin,allscholarshipflowedanditwastrulythegatewaytothelifeofthemind,asthebulkofscientific,religious,legal,andphilosophicalliteraturewaswritteninthelanguageuntilaboutthe16thcentury.Toimmerseoneselfinclassicalandhumanisticstudies,Latinwasamust.

    GrammarschoolsinEuropeandespeciallyEnglandduringthistimewereLatinschools,andthefirstsecondaryschoolestablishedinAmericabythePuritanswasaLatinschoolaswell.Butbeginninginthe14thcentury,writersstartedtousethevernacularintheirworks,whichslowlychippedawayatLatinscentralimportanceineducation.ThistrendforEnglishlanguagelearningacceleratedinthe19thcenturyschoolsshiftedfromturningoutfutureclergymentograduatingbusinessmenwhowouldtaketheirplaceinanindustrializingeconomy.Anemphasisontheliberalartsslowlygavewaytowhatwasconsideredamorepracticaleducationinreading,writing,andarithmetic.

    WhileLatinhadbeendyingaslowdeathforhundredsofyears,itstillhadastrongpresenceinschoolsuntilthemiddleofthe20thcentury.Beginninginthe1960s,collegestudentsdemandedthatthecurriculumbemoreopen,inclusive,andlessEurocentric.AmongtheirsuggestedchangeswaseliminatingLatinasarequiredcourseforallstudents.Toquellstudentprotests,universitiesbegantoslowlyphaseouttheLatinrequirement,andbecausecollegesstoppedrequiringLatin,manyhighschoolsinAmericastoppedofferingLatinclasses,too.Aroundthesametime,theCatholicChurchreviseditsliturgyandpermittedprieststoleadMassinvernacularlanguagesinsteadofLatin,thuseliminatingoneofthepublicslasttiestotheancientlanguage.

    WhileitsnolongerarequirementforamantoknowLatintogetaheadinlife,itsstillagreatsubjecttostudy.IhadtotakeclassesinLatinaspartofmyLettersmajorattheUniversityofOklahoma,andIreallyenjoyedit.Evenifyourewelloutofschoolyourself,thereareamyriadofreasonswhyyoushouldstillconsiderobtainingatleastarudimentaryknowledgeofthelanguage:

    KnowingLatincanimproveyourEnglishvocabulary.WhileEnglishisaGermaniclanguage,Latinhasstronglyinfluencedit.MostofourprefixesandsomeoftherootsofcommonEnglishwordsderivefromLatin.Bysomeestimates,30%ofEnglishwordsderivefromtheancientlanguage.ByknowingthemeaningoftheseLatinwords,ifyouchancetocomeacrossawordyouveneverseenbefore,youcanmakeaneducatedguessatwhatitmeans.Infact,studieshavefoundthathighschoolstudentswhostudiedLatinscoredameanof647ontheSATverbalexam,comparedwiththenationalaverageof505.

    KnowingLatincanimproveyourforeignlanguagevocabulary.MuchofthecommonlyspokenRomaniclanguageslikeSpanish,French,andItalianderivedfromVulgarLatin.YoullbesurprisedbythenumberofRomanicwordsthatareprettymuchthesameastheirLatincounterparts.

    KnowingLatincangiveyoumoreinsighttohistoryandliterature.LatinwasthelinguafrancaoftheWestforoverathousandyears.Consequently,muchofourhistory,science,andgreatliteraturewasfirstrecordedinLatin.ReadingtheseclassicsintheoriginallanguagecangiveyouinsightsyouotherwisemayhavemissedbyconsumingitinEnglish.

    Moreover,modernwriters(andbymodernImeanbeginninginthe17thcentury)oftenpeppertheirworkwithLatinwordsandphraseswithoutofferingatranslationbecausethey(reasonably)expectthereadertobefamiliarwithit.Thisistrueofgreatbooksfromevenjustafewdecadesago(seemsmuchlesscommonthesedayswhichisntahopefulcommentaryonthedirectionofthepublicsliteracyIwouldthink).NothavingarudimentaryknowledgeofLatinwillcauseyoutomissoutonfullyunderstandingwhatthewritermeanttoconvey.
