Description Lauderburn Wood is an accessible and private, mixed habitat woodland of about 10.13 acres, set in beautiful Borders countryside near the historic market town of Lauder, 25 miles southeast of Edinburgh centre. The wood comprises mixed conifers and broadleaves including spruce, Scots pine, larch, birch, ash and oak mostly over 25 years old. The pretty Lauder Burn, a freshwater upland stream, meanders down a shallow gradient valley through the entire southern and western open ground areas of the woodland. Grass meadows, heather, gorse and juniper banks, rocky outcrops and small wetland areas, adorn the sides of the burn glen. The wood sits 230m above sea level on gentle hillside with a sunny southwest aspect. There is good private access onto a hard-standing stone track leading to a generous parking area inside the wood. Lauderburn Wood offers many ready opportunities for nature conservation, recreation and amenity use. Its ecological diversity attracts a wealth of terrestrial, riparian and aquatic flora and fauna through the seasons. Roe deer, snipe, barn owl, lizard, frog, heron, freshwater shrimp, and some rare plants, birds and butterflies are just a few of the species noted on the nature trails, ride margins or by the rocky pools of the trickling Lauder Burn. The wooded area is manageably sized and well-designed with deciduous broadleaf, larch and evergreen Scots pine fringes softening and protecting the main Sitka spruce stand inside. Some timber may be selectively felled for firewood or wood products, leaving the bulk of the remaining trees to mature in quality, provide canopy shelter and some dead wood for wildlife and to encourage shade-tolerant regeneration. The meadows could be generally left wild, planted with some more native trees or shrubs, or suit some managed low intensity grazing. There is scope to enhance facets of the woodland or simply enjoy the calm relaxation of getting away and into the great outdoors. The large internal parking area can accommodate private camping and barbeques with friends and family, whilst a suitable storage hut could be located nearby. It also provides a great base camp from which to discover and forage further into the wood, picnic at its various beauty spots, or explore the wider environs.
