PEDAGOGICAL INTERVENTIONS AND WORKSHOPS A20 The Tutoring and Academic Success Centre (TASC) has developed pedagogical workshops and activities on a variety of topics relating to the

development of soft skills and can be offered virtually in your classes in A20.

I am flexible with how we could approach the workshops, and can work with a teacher in how that would look in their specific class. There

are multiple ways this could be done, and can figure something out the suits a teacher’s class's needs and design.

Workshop topics include:

Avoiding Plagiarism / MLA and APA Referencing

Time Management and Avoiding Procrastination

RespectWorks Tools for these Times

Hi Everyone,

I sincerely hope this finds you all well! As we move into the summer, I want to reiterate sincere well-wishes in this closing of the winter term

in hope that folks are able to enjoy the warmer weather.

In Collaboration with the PSI Office, guided discussion circles with employees are being offered as a form of closure to the term; please check

out announcements from the PSI office for more details!

While continuing to hold space to acknowledge how we are each living different contexts and responding to the global crisis in different ways,

I think there is some certainty that we have all been confronted by varying levels of uncertainty in these ever-evolving circumstances. I found

this article about dealing with uncertainty a particularly helpful read and recommend checking it out! This UofT article on staying grounded

that is geared for students may also be helpful to pass along and contains overarching messages that can apply to us as well. Both offer

practical tips while advocating for self-compassion.

For more information, resources, reflections and tools, you can visit the RespectWorks Website. I also continue to be available and reachable

by email during the week and available to schedule verbal consultations around when would best suit our respective availabilities.

Sending lots of tremendous gratitude, and well-wishes for as smooth a week as possible!

Vanier College Social Media Accounts

If you are considering starting a social media account for a Vanier program, department or project, and are not sure what to do, then read

on. Take a look at our guidelines for Facebook & Twitter. We will be preparing more guidelines soon.

Contact Vanier Communications and ask us any questions you might have. Your main contact in the department keeping track of the Vanier

accounts is Zsofia Orszagh. You may reach her via email at [email protected]

The College needs to know about the existence of any account linked to Vanier or using the Vanier name, so Vanier Communications asks for

access to Vanier Social Media Accounts. We do this so that important accounts don’t just disappear or become inaccessible because people

change jobs within Vanier, retire or leave for other opportunities. We had one case where the account holder passed away. So in order not to

lose the accounts, it is important to keep us informed and provide us (Zsofia Orszagh) with administrative rights. Once we have that, we will

also add your account under the list of Vanier Social Media accounts page on our website.

Thank you.

Zsofia Orszagh, Web Communications Officer, Communications and Corporate Affairs

ECE Weekly Tips Good morning, from the Early Childhood Education department! We hope that the past week went smoothly, and we wish you a wonderful upcoming week! This week, our theme is water! You know, H₂O, aqua, Adam’s Ale, dihydrogen monoxide, eau! Water is a perfect resource for young children- abundant, free, easy to clean up, versatile, responsive, and downright fun!

First of all, here are two art activity ideas featuring water.

Another really fun water activity is the Water Glass Xylophone.

You will need a set of identical water glasses (6 to 8 is perfect), and something to play your “xylophone” with, like a plastic spoon or wooden dowel. Mason jars work too. Fill each of the glasses with a different amount of water- this could be a fun way to explore fractions with children. Organize the glasses from least full to most full, and then tap lightly on each one to see which tones are produced! You can add a little food colouring to each glass to create a beautiful visual effect as well. Check out this video to see a master and her instrument! https://youtu.be/gUIA5vkcK60 There are many wonderful songs that feature water and the creatures that live in it. The first one we have to highlight shall, for your own sanity, remain nameless. It rhymes with “maybe spark”. If you really don’t know what song we’re referring to, check it out here: https://youtu.be/XqZsoesa55w But fair warning- this song will stay stuck in your head. Forever. Moving on… Baby Beluga, written by Raffi, is definitely of our favourites- see a great live version here: https://youtu.be/CDx9zqDpSik Another really fun water song is Slippery Fish- here is a sweet version your young children will like: https://youtu.be/qEnUPiRKXco

Hey! Where Did My Picture Go??

Young children will surely enjoy painting with water! You can get out those old paintbrushes that you were gonna use when doing those renos that you had planned… Anyways, gather old paintbrushes, buckets of water, and then head outside! Children will love painting on a whole variety of surfaces- the sidewalk and driveway, brick walls, wooden or metal fences, windows, trees, the car, and probably, themselves or each other! And then, once they’re done, they can stand back and watch their pictures disappear as the water evaporates. And then they can start painting all over again!

Ice Cube Painting

In its frozen state, water is also really fun to use for art. Create your own “frozen

paintbrushes” by filling the sections of an old ice cube tray with water, and then

add either food colouring or a little bit of paint. Insert a popsicle stick or

something similar into each compartment and then put the tray in the freezer.

The next day, you’ll have a whole set of really cool art tools that can be used to

paint on paper, or outside on the sidewalk and places like that!

Page 8: Launch of a Toolkit for Uncertain Times€¦ · First of all, here are two art activity ideas featuring water. Another really fun water activity is the Water Glass Xylophone. You

Will It Sink or Will It Float? is a very interesting science experience that younger children will enjoy. Fill a large tub or bucket with water. The bathtub is also an option. Assemble a set of objects of various sizes, shapes, weight etc… Children will have great ideas about what to try. One by one, place the objects in the water, inviting children to predict what they think will happen! They will be fascinated to observe that certain objects plummet immediately down to the bottom, while others don’t stay submerged, no matter how hard they try! Finally, for those inevitable rainy, watery days, here are 2 marvelous children’s books that will help to pass the time:

Some great, lyrical language in this book that will have you celebrating rain!

Another wonderful book from Eric Carle. As always, we’d love to hear from you – if you’ve got any great family-friendly tips, suggestions, recipes etc… you want to share with the Vanier community, send us an email at [email protected] And for daily ideas, links and information, follow us on Twitter @vanierece Stay safe and stay healthy everyone!

Tools to Support Students with Online Collaboration Using Yammer to Create an Online Community for Students and Staff

Did you know that as part of O365 we have access to a social network app called Yammer? It operates like Facebook, but is behind Vanier’s O365 panel. Sometimes students may be shy to reach out to classmates on Instagram, What’s App, Facebook, etc. but they might be more comfortable reaching out to them on a Vanier social media platform where all students are already members. Users can create their own groups, share media and comment on posts.

As we contemplate teaching online next term, Yammer may be a helpful way to provide students with communal spaces where they can work or hang out together. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQGs_ULgcaw

Yammer can also be integrated into the Teams platform (but within Teams it’s called Communities). Netiquette and Constructive Feedback Just a reminder for those who may find these tools useful to share with your students working in groups as part of their end-of-term projects or assignments.

There are two tracks to choose from: overview and in-depth. Learners can choose their learning track and have access to all of the content at all times, so that they can progress at their own pace.

A synchronous session in the form of a webinar is scheduled with the pedagogical team to conduct case studies and answer questions. At all times, discussion forums are available for discussing various topics.

Quizzes are given at the end of each module. Each learner will receive a certificate of participation upon passing the SPOC.

Possible follow-up

Students who complete this private online course can take their learning further with the credit course PED625 - Blended learning: Transforming Teaching and Learning, which may be credited toward Diplôme d’études supérieures spécialisées de 2e cycle en enseignement au collégial (DESS) and the Graduate Diploma in College Teaching (GDCT) offered at Performa.
