Launch of the
Charter of Silver Cyclists

Background• Europe is the world´s number one tourism destination and tourism represents 9,7%
of the EU28 GDP, 25.000.000 jobs.
• Cycling tourism generates over 44 billion euros annually and 450.000 jobs.
Background• By 2030, 24% of the European population will be aged 55 or over.
• Senior undertaking cycling holidays - Silver Cyclists - should be treated equally.
• Silver Cyclist need high-quality tourism products catering their needs.
Objective of the charterTo recognize that:
• Silver Cyclists can deliver additional
visits, economic impacts and create jobs
• The wider society can benefit from
senior citizens taking more cycling
holidays.
European (Cycle) Tourism Businesses
• To acknowledge the opportunities that the
Silver Cyclists represent
• To integrate the needs of Silver cyclists into
their (cycle) tourism offers and develop new
(cycle) tourism packages
• To promote these tourism packages
• To cooperate with other stakeholders
Local, regional, national and European
public bodies:• To recognise the opportunity of Silver
Cyclist to their destination to generate
additional visits
• To invest in comfortable and safe cycling
infrastructure, accessible public transport
and attractions fulfilling the needs of
senior cyclists
• To support specific events and promotion,
communication for Silver Cyclists
Non-governmental organisations and the
people of Europe:• To recognise the social and economic benefits of Silver Cyclists
• To lobby decision makers to invest in measures for (Silver) Cyclists.
• To involve and cooperate with senior citizens and their representative organisations.
