John died later in 1861.

It is likely that his parents married in 1777 (note that a John Bird was a witness at daughter

Anne’s wedding)1

St Mary Lambeth, 1777

I have been unable to trace Robert’s death but afterwards, did widow Ann marry a witness

from daughter Anne’s wedding?

1 A Robert Kipling was a tea-dealer at Tower Hill in the 1770s. However, it is possible that this was the Robert Kipling of Bowes and later Ferrybridge, who coincidentally also married in London in 1777 (see ‘The Tippling Dean Kipling’). A Robert Kipling, porter, was tried at the Old Bailey for theft in 1773. In evidence, he is quoted as referring to “his master in Yorkshire” but I have not been able to ascertain anything more about him (see ‘Transported!’).

Son Joseph enlisted in the Army, the 24th Regiment of Foot (2nd Warwickshire Regt.). He

came before a court martial in Malta in April 1869, losing 84 days seniority for using

threatening language. He was before the court again in January 1872 in Chatham for

desertion, and again in September 1872 in Gibraltar.

Later the same year he was penalised twice again for being absent, once whilst drunk.

Ebenezer died in 1910. In 1911, Elizabeth was head of the family (#142).

George, age 5, was a natural son of Jane. He had originally been registered as George

Westcott, with his father named as George Westcott, a waiter, and Jane calling herself

Westcott, too. However, all references to ‘Westcott’ were removed three months later

following the submission of a statutory declaration by Jane and mother Elizabeth Ann.

Thomas

Thomas never married and in 1939, he can be found living with sister Jane and nephew

George in East Ham.

Thomas probably died at Thurrock in 1943 and George at Newham in 1981.

Benjamin was a ‘clicker’. This was someone who cut out the uppers for shoes from sheets of

leather. He married in 1886.
