Worship Help

At this time each year we assemble our schedule for the coming year of those

who will be helping in Sunday morning worship activities. Helpers rotate their

tasks with some serving only every couple months. We’re especially looking

for those who haven’t participated in the past.

The Worship Committee will have

training for all roles. Couples are

welcome to volunteer as ushers or communion servers together. If you are

interested or have any questions about the duties, contact Elders Janice Berger,

Howard Lawrence, Vickie Chaplin or Pastor Mark.

History of the Laurel Church

Flower Calendar

The flower arrangements, flower calendar and the Palm for Palm Sunday were brought about by Muriel Perross (a.k.a. Baby Sis). She was born in 1934 and baptized at Laurel Presbyterian Church. She passed away March 1985. Muriel was very opposed to artificial flowers of any kind and she very much liked fresh flowers. She met with the Session and asked for permission to have fresh flowers in the sanctuary. Permission was granted and so began the tradition of fresh flowers each Sunday. It was decided that white flowers would be used on Communion Sundays. She made the first purchases and then invited other members to participate and the flower calendar was born. Muriel gave a Palm each year until her death and then her sister, Phyllis Perross, continued the tradition. When you see the live flowers in church on Sunday, remember Muriel Perross. Muriel also served LPC as a Sunday School teacher, member of the adult choir, Elder and Treasurer.

Thank you Phyllis Perross and Pat Morris for sharing

this history with us.

Gerry Anders’ Roast

Celebrating his 20th year as pastor of LPC

West Virginia Night October 2000

The Laurel congregation planned a surprise “Roast”

for Gerry, who is a native West Virginian. His

sisters from West Virginia also attended and

surprised him as well. Everyone waited in the

sanctuary for his arrival and he was immediately

given some West Virginia overalls, a plaid flannel

shirt, and a straw hat to put on. A genuine West

Virginia hillbilly! The Member Care Committee had

worked on this surprise for months and had corn

cob pipes made by Terry Southers along with lots

of WV items given by the WV Department of

Tourism. There is a video in the church library of

the evening including all the entertainment.

1-14-29 to 7-27-01

Don became a member of Laurel

Presbyterian Church in 1994, at which

time we moved from California. He was

a very active member of the

Administration and Property Committee.

He drew up plans for the remodeling of

the kitchen and worked very hard on that project. The Window

Fund was instigated as a result of his efforts in obtaining

estimates, etc. Don was a great husband (Jean), father and

grandfather.

Douglas LaVern Kelley “Buddy” October 20, 1925 – April 21, 1989

Marjorie Terry Kelley “Margie”

June 16, 1925 - December 14, 1993 Hattie and Bunny Terry, parents of Margie, would visit Buddy quite often as a child when he was a patient at Crippled Children’s Hospital in Richmond. Little did they know at the time, that the little boy they so dearly loved would grow up and marry their youngest daughter, Margie. Margie joined Laurel Church as a young child, along with her two older sisters, Dorothy and Lucille. She began singing in the choir at a very early age and continued to have an active part in the choir as an adult. She taught Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, made communion bread for many years, kept the nursery during Sunday school, and participated in any church and community activities she was asked to do. Buddy attended Laurel with Margie during their “courting” days, and became a member on January 7, 1945, at which time he also received Christian Baptism. Margie and Buddy were friends, became childhood sweethearts and married on February 10, 1944. They were the devoted parents of Sharon Kelley Moody, son-in-law, Ronald E. Moody and grandparents of Aron Douglas Moody (Buddy’s

namesake) and the love of their lives.

Souper Bowl

February 2 Souper Bowl of Caring is youth across the nation working to fight hunger and poverty in their own communities around the time of the Super Bowl football game. On Super Bowl Sunday, our youth will take up a collection, asking for one dollar or one item of food for people in need. They give 100% of their donation directly to a local hunger-relief charity.

History of Laurel, Virginia

The Laurel, Virginia community, first named Hungary Station, was the location of a spur railroad line to the coalfields in western Henrico County. During the Civil War the station was burned, and Colonial Ulrich Dahlgren’s body was secretly buried there in March, 1864 (later re-interred in Philadelphia). In 1890, the Laurel Industrial School was established to offer wayward boys’ an alternative to imprisonment. It was Henrico County’s first public school and later became the Virginia Industrial School. The complex consisted of two dormitory buildings (one of which is still standing), an administrative building, and multiple farm buildings. When the reformatory was moved in 1920-22 to its’ present location as the Beaumont Learning Center (Powhatan County), the community remained active. The Laurel Industrial School Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (added 1987) and the Virginia Historical Landmarks Register. The A.A. Harvey General Stone (now Laurel Gallery) was built c1910 to serve the community. Over the years the building has undergone several transformations…from general store to housing to Crystal Ice Company and the Laurel Post Office (Lillian Merkle, Postmaster). The building was completely restored in 1991 to its present use as the Laurel Gallery. Efforts were made by the preservationist, Robert Bluford, to ensure that the building be returned to its original style. www.laurelgallery.net/history.html

John D. (Buddy) Millikin 2-19-1940 to 12-16-1993 Buddy worked for the Richmond Police Department, and was President of the Retired Police Officers Association.

He joined Laurel Church in 1990. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Virginia W. Watson 12-27-1916 to 7/11/2001 Virginia Watson was a member of Laurel Church for over 60 years. She attended many church activities including Sunday school, Circle meetings, and Bible class. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Vera Sheppard 4-26-1912 to 1-30-1994 Vera loved her church. Her daughter, Barbara Larimer, is uncertain of the year Vera became a member of Laurel Church, but she “remembers us always being there.” On the Sunday Vera had her stroke, she read her Bible, marked her daily reading, and was ready for church. Laurel Presbyterian Church was her church. She was faithful. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Ann and Herman Wright Loved and devoted members of Laurel Church. Both were wonderful cooks and both volunteered for almost everything that was needed in the church.

JOIN A “GRACE GROUP” THIS LENTEN SEASON! This Lenten Season you’re invited to join a “Grace Group” where we will experience community in a grace-filled time of song, study, prayer and fellowship. You may choose to join the “Alpha” group which will meet Tuesdays 10:00-11:30 am or the “Omega” group which will meet Tuesday evenings 7:00-8:30 pm.

Both groups will meet initially in the Church Parlor, but it’s hoped that members may invite the groups into their homes on a rotating basis. Pastor Mark will lead the groups which will meet on five Tuesdays during Lent: March 11, 18, 25 and April 1 & 8. The study time, Touched by Jesus: A Journey Towards Wholeness, will focus on five healings of Jesus and their meaning for today. Because we want to retain the special nature of a small group, they will be limited in size. You may sign up through the phone, email or on a list at church in late February. Make sure to specify which time you desire. Make time for some “grace” this Lenten Season! -Mark S

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% AN UPDATE… In December, members of the congregation gathered informally to discuss a proposal for a small ethnic Vietnamese Christian congregation to rent space from us. The Vietnamese church currently worships in the West End Alliance Church on Francistown Road but seeks to relocate to a location more visible from the street. During the congregational discussion, viewpoints were expressed both in favor of and against the proposal with those endorsing it in the majority. The Session, which had interviewed leaders of the Vietnamese church and thoroughly discussed the proposal prior to the discussion, afterward voted to proceed to draft a rental agreement. This agreement was, in turn, submitted to the Board of Trustees of the Presbytery of the James, which has attorneys among its members, per protocol, and was recently approved. It will now be discussed

with the leaders of the Vietnamese Church. No date has been set for the relationship to begin. Please keep this plan in your prayers that, if it finally comes to fruition, it may bring blessing to both of these congregations ministering in the name of Jesus Christ. – Pastor Mark

TRY THE FOUR-WAY TEST!

Dr. Neil Davis continues his adult class based on his book “The Four-Way Test: 24 Words That Will Change Your Life.” A copy of the book is available free of charge. You can check out the syllabus on the Laurel website under “Adult Studies.” Through the end of February Sundays at 8:45 am in the Fellowship Hall.

Do you love to sing? Do you want to be part of a wonderful

music ministry at Laurel?

Then please consider joining our Adult Choir! All that is required is to love music and to commit to Wednesday rehearsals and Sunday morning Worship. We have so much fun rehearsing together and learning music. We will soon begin working on our Lenten/Easter cantata and special music and would love to have some new folks join us. If you have any questions about our choir, please see David Clatterbuck.

Answer to Who Am

I Wayne & Marcia Deisher Marcia: I was born in Buffalo, NY and raised in a small town outside of Buffalo. As a

child we traveled all around the US and parts of Canada in a motor home. My father loved to explore the west and my mother preferred New England, where she grew up. Dad used to make up games for us to play along the way. He was an engineer so most of them had to do with math and that is probably why I turned out to be an accountant, math was always easy for me. I was raised Lutheran but went to a Presbyterian college, Westminster College, in PA. After college I was unable to find a job in Buffalo and had a friend who moved to Richmond who invited me to stay with her and look here. I have been with Carpenter Company ever since. Wayne was born and raised in Waynesboro, VA. He was raised in the Baptist church where his father was a member. His mother was a member of the Brethren Church. After high school Wayne came to Richmond and studied accounting at VCU. Once he graduated from college he went to Vietnam for a year of active service and spent a year in the reserves after that. He returned to Richmond and worked as an accountant and eventually started working for Carpenter Company. That is where we met. We started to date and soon after that Wayne was sent to Juarez Mexico to set up a plant for Carpenter there. He was gone for 6 months, which was longer than we had been dating, but we talked almost every day. When he returned we continued to date, but we kept our relationship quiet. Carpenter had a policy against spouses working for the company and since he was in payroll at the time it was a very sensitive issue. Eventually (4 ½ years of dating) we decided that we wanted to get married. We really didn’t know what to expect when we went to work and told them we were engaged. I had been home to Buffalo for Christmas and when I told my boss I had become engaged over Christmas he expected

me to tell him I was moving home. He didn’t say much and I eventually asked him if he wanted to know who I was engaged too. He gave me a funny look and said, “Do I know this person?” I laughed and said, “Yes, you do”. He was completely shocked when I told him I was marrying Wayne. Wayne got a similar reaction from his boss. Neither of them had any idea we were dating. We still were not sure what would happen and were surprised when they rewrote the policy on employment of spouses so that we could both stay with the company. We couldn’t work in the same department or for the same supervisor, but we could both stay with the company. Wayne said the first memory Marcia had of him was when he ask her and her coworker to be quiet while they were working! Thank you Marcia and Wayne for sharing your story.

Volunteer service at Laurel

How many hours do you think the members at Laurel volunteer in a year? In honor of our centennial anniversary, we’re going to celebrate our ability to reach out to others. Calling this, “100 Hours of Service for 100 Years of History”, we will ask that every volunteer keep track of their hours of service. We’re sure we will hit the 100-hour mark in a short time. But we will keep track of it for one year to see just how many hours we, as a church, give to serve and glorify God. Starting on our anniversary date, March 8th, 2014, for every time you volunteer, please fill out a quick form to be found on the table in the Narthex. Place the paper in the marked box on the table and we’ll tally the hours and share the results. We won’t be requiring your name, only the event, the hours and the date. Simple! Volunteer activities include: Outreach events of any kind associated with Laurel, participating in worship, choir practice and singing at worship, bulletin board art work, Communion prep and serving, PowerPoint and sound system, preparing and serving meals, local mission, mowing grass, teaching, working with the youth, upkeep and maintenance of the physical property and equipment --and many more. Thank you for helping us to celebrate the giving spirit of our Laurel family!
