Leonardo da Vinci lived an itinerant lie.Troughout his career – rom its beginnings in thecreative maelstrom o fifeenth century Florenceto his role as genius in residence at the court o theking o France – Leonardo created a kind o privateuniverse or himsel and his work.

Leonardo also spent a great deal o time away

rom his easel, pursuing his interest in engineering, natural science, sculpture, poetry, ables, music, and anatomy. In the time that another artist wouldfinish a series o paintings, he would work onone. Sometimes a painting would take decades, accompanying him on his travels as he worked onother commissions.

Leonardo’s private world was both vibrant andactive. It sometimes did and at other times did notinteract with the wider world. But what emergedrom it has established Leonardo as the definition othe Renaissance Man.

Joost Keizer is Assistant Proessor o A rt History and Director o

Rembrandt is probably the most amous Dutch

painter o the seventeenth century. His works areloved today, but he was not always so well regarded.

Rembrandt’s public acclaim and wealth asa painter came to him as a very young man. Hisimages were vigorous, psychologically compellingbut also ofen less-than-flattering. However, the arthe produced in his final years is arguably his mostintimate, sensitive, and open. By the time o hisdeath in 1669 Rembrandt was destitute.
