FROM THE DIRECTOR

SUSAN P. ISON I would like to welcome our new Rialto Theater Manager, Bryan Zellmer, who joined us August 31st. Bryan brings nearly 20 years of performance, production, and theater business experience to the City of Loveland. In addition to earning his BA degree in Theater from Metropolitan State College of Denver and an MBA from Wilkes University, he has worked in leadership roles at a ten-thousand-seat amphitheater in Pennsylvania, a casino entertainment lounge in New York, and a state-of-the-art performing arts center in New Jersey.

Bryan was also the Marketing Director for two boutique advertising agencies in New York and opened a performing arts school with his wife, a retired professional ballerina. With family ties to historic American theater, he says he is thrilled to be joining the Rialto and is looking forward to engaging the community and building upon the Theater’s past successes.

We are very happy to have him. If you have the opportunity, please welcome him to Loveland.

This exhibition, presenting one of the largest collections of art by Christo and Jeanne-Claude in the United States, was started by Tom Golden in the summer of 1974. Golden’s personal and professional relationship with the artists began during the 1974 public hearings for Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s project Running Fence. Golden continued to manage and assist with several of the artists’ large-scale projects such as The Umbrellas and Over the River. Drawings and collages of the large-scale public works, sold to fund the actual installations, are an important component of this collection. This collection includes original drawings, sculptures, collages, and photographs capturing the versatility, longevity, and international scope of the duo’s extensive career.

This collection represents not only the special relationship between an artist and a collector, but also the collaborative effort between the artists and the many people involved in producing the works.

This exhibition was organized by the Sonoma County Museum, Santa Rosa, CA; Exhibition Tour Management by Landau Traveling Exhibitions, Los Angeles, CA.

It took them 24 years to earn a majority vote of the German Parliament - 292 in favor vs. 223 against - to gain permission to do this incredible, beautiful, and spectacular project.

Kokkin is an acclaimed sculptor and one of the leading artists in the international community of figurative sculptors. Originality and strength of expression mark her works which are executed with painstaking accuracy to anatomy and details, and convey a sensual, yet energetic quality. She has sculpted themes from the marine world and has a long career as a portrait artist. Kokkin’s artwork is placed all over the world, with the majority of pieces in the U.S. and Norway.

BRAD SNEEDFebruary, 2016MUSEUM LOBBYBrad Sneed grew up in rural Newton, Kansas. If he wasn’t riding his horse, climbing trees, building forts, hunting, fishing, or playing sports, he could be found in his bedroom, drawing or painting. Subjects varied widely, from farm implements and rustic barns to Indians and cowboys –even portraits of family pets! When it came time to consider a career, art seemed an obvious choice. Brad attended Kansas University where he earned a BFA in Visual Communication-Illustration. A picture book illustration class turned him on to the notion of illustrating books professionally. He enjoyed creating a number of related sequential works that effectively and creatively tell a visual story. His first opportunity to illustrate a book followed a series of portfolio reviews with New York City publishers. Grandpa’s Song was published in 1991. To date Brad has illustrated 29 books, including Lucky Russell and Deputy Harvey and the Ant Cow Caper, which he also wrote. Brad lives in Prairie Village, Kansas with his wife and daughter.

I enjoy visiting schools to talk with students and teachers about illustrating and writing picture books. School visits provide a wonderful opportunity to interact with children and to shed light on how a book is created. It is very satisfying to hear from a teacher that after my presentation, her students couldn’t wait to return to their desks to write a story and draw a picture! ~ Brad Sneed

EVOLUTION OF ILLUSTRATION WITH BRAD SNEEDWednesday, February 10, 4:30 – 5:30 pmGrades 6 – 12FREESneed will demonstrate the fun, yet complex process of illustrating a picture book. Each step will be explored from reading the manuscript, using the imagination, creating thestoryboard, performing reference and research, making the dummy book, revisions, and the final artwork. See how a doodle evolves into a completed painting. Cooperation of those involved in the creative process is stressed, as well as the notion that in order to excel, practice and perseverance are essential.

AYN HANNATEXTILE, PRINT AND ADVENTURES IN MAPPINGFebruary 13 – April 10, 2016FOOTE GALLERYOpening Reception: Friday, February 12, 6 – 8 pm

Trained as a printmaker, Colorado artist Ayn Hanna creates richly drawn active surfaces, exploring drawing and mark-making. In her textile work, Hanna uses her own hand-dyed fabrics combined with multiple surface design techniques including painting, discharging, and deconstructed screen printing to create abstract mixed media textile paintings and art cloth. Her textile paintings include layers of fabric combined with thread “drawing” to develop texture and line. Ayn Hanna earned her MFA in printmaking and sculpture from Colorado State University in 1990 and has been working with textiles since 2005. I am inspired by our many systems for mapping and organizing ideas, stories, data and place. I enjoy the overlaps that exist between art and science – shapes, models, diagrams, formulas, patterns, etc. I am fascinated by connectors and connections, both physical and spiritual. My work is a mapping of my inner and outer world, combining imagery and personal symbols to convey my feelings of places and experiences. ~ Ayn Hanna

ALABASTER INDUSTRY IN COLORADOOn view through March 13, 2016

GREEN ROOMSee the personal collection of vintage Colorado alabaster items from Fort Collins-based historian and author Jason Marmor. The growing collection, which will be donated to the Museum in the future, includes a wide variety of decorative and functional objects, most of which were made from locally sourced alabaster. Included in the collection are lamp bases, bookends, vases, powder jars, candlesticks, clocks, as well as souvenir salt & pepper shakers from a number of regional tourist destinations. While the Loveland Museum possesses a remarkable collection of alabaster items made by Loveland’s Proctor family, Marmor’s collection includes examples made by other companies and craftsmen working in Colorado and Wyoming during the heyday of the Colorado alabaster industry (c. 1933-1970). Vintage advertising materials from the alabaster industry will also be included in this exhibit.

Learn the basics of stone carving, from design to tool techniques, from stone carver Laurie White.

This hands-on workshop is for all skill levels, and participants will need to bring their own tools and carving stone (supply list is provided below and costs approx. $75 - $100). During Saturday’s session, Laurie will guide you through evaluating the stone, learning to see the design “within” the stone, and blocking out the form to carve. The Sunday session will focus on carving your stone sculpture with your hand tools. Please bring your own lunch each day and dress ready to carve with close-toed shoes.

Required Supplies:Tools and stones are available for purchase through Colorado Alabaster Supply in Fort Collins.

• (1) flat 3/4″ medium chisel• (1) point chisel• (1) 5/8” tooth chisel, or other small tooth chisel• (1) lightweight carving hammer• A piece of stone to carve – should be alabaster or limestone less than 80 lbs. This

Dr. George Stevens, Kent State University graduate, Professor, and Dean Emeritus, will juxtapose the words of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with poetry and music reflecting the past realities for African Americans and the harsh realities of continuing racism. The program consists of African American spirituals, poetry, videos, and readings from the 19th and 20th century, the themes of which are still relevant today. The reading of Dr. King’s most famous speech, “I Have A Dream,” will be followed by a Question and Answer session. Dr. Stevens is a member of Loveland’s Martin Luther King Committee.

Three women will walk out of Colorado’s past and onto the stage in the Foote Gallery: Mother Jones (activist, labor advocate), Helen Hunt Jackson (author, Native American advocate), and Anne Ellis (author, ordinary woman advocate). The performers, Charlene Pazar, Gretchen Payne, and Joyce Nelson, are members of “Legendary Ladies,” a volunteer non-profit organization that promotes the history of women of the West. Together, they offer realistic portrayals of women who helped shift statewide and national perceptions of women, moving them from the discrete margins of life into the forefront of our heritage.

Loveland’s Martin Luther King Committee is co-sponsoring two presentations for the Thoroughly Historic Thursdays program series as part of its efforts to help the Loveland community embrace those who are marginalized by race or circumstance.

FREE LECTUREAlthough we imagine them all to be vile pests, new discoveries in the ecology of parasitic organisms have forced us to re-examine our attitude toward them. Special attention will be given to parasites on humans (we don’t want to dwell too much on people suffering, but on the physiological “tricks” that things play in order to feed on us), the amazing adaptations of other parasites in nature, and the many parasites that are beneficial to people.

FREE EVENTSince 1947, people from all over the world have been sending Valentines to Loveland to be cancelled with a stamp that sends greetings from the Sweetheart City. A WANDERINGBOTANIST

China is about the size of North America, but with different species of plants. It is very diverse, from deserts

in the northwest to the subtropics in the south. This lecture will

consider the long history of Chinese agriculture, familiar plants that came

from China and the plant hunters who found them, American plants that are

common in China today, and the puns that make the Chinese particularly like

certain species of plants.

Kathy Keeler, “A Wandering Botanist,” enriches and entertains with curious

tales of the plant world—plants we love, plants we hate, plants that made

people fortunes, and plants people searched for all over the world. She

is the author of A Wandering Botanist blog, the printed Curious Stories of

Familiar Plants, Notable Plants of the Foothills Trail hiking guide, Autumn in Kyoto photo book, and more than 50 technical publications on plants and

ecology. Kathy retired to pursue travel and history, and she now searches

the globe for stories of the plant wonders of the world. She received her Ph.D. in Genetics at University

of California, Berkeley and was a Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln,

for 31 years. Kathy has amassed tales from hundreds of plants after

traveling in over 25 countries and all 50 states.

FREE LECTUREFemale presidents have restored countries back to peace, prosperity, and strong economy. They are strong, forward thinking, and patriotic. Margaret Thatcher, Erna Solberg, and Angela Merkel are a few names that cross our minds as formidable female leaders of modern times. The United States is one of the few countries that has yet to produce a female head of state. Ever since Victoria Woodhull ran for the President of the United States in 1872, various American women have tried to take command. Preethi Fernando, a Sri Lankan born author, now Loveland based, is the author of 17 Women Who Shook the World (Schiffer Publishing, PA). Preethi will do an engaging, educational, historical, and fun Powerpoint presentation on “Female Presidents Who Rocked the World.” Preethi has autographed copies of the book available for $22.

FREE EVENTWhat would a poetic geography of Loveland look like? Find out by writing a poem to help create a poetic map or by simply coming to the reading on April 14th to enjoy hearing poems about favorite features of our city.

If you would like to submit a poem, first choose a place that speaks to you or reminds you of a special experience you had there. For example, you might write about a street, a building, a park, an event, a trail, or a piece of art. Write and submit your poem (3 to 25 lines long) electronically by March 15th to Jenni Dobson at [email protected]. Several will be selected for this special reading celebrating National Poetry Month.

BUTTERFLIES AND MOTHS PRESENTED BY ARLO PELEGRINThursday, April 28, 5:30 pm

FREE LECTUREThe real story behind the pretty wings. These sophisticated animals may seem friendly and benign but they are some of humankind’s greatest enemies. This is an up-close look into the insect world that will cover all aspects of the Lepidoptera lifecycle, with an in-depth explanation of metamorphosis and an examination of what makes these creatures so spectacularly successful.

Arlo Pelegrin is a Colorado native and entomologist who has traveled the world to study creatures and insects. He has worked in Costa Rica, Indonesia, and Finland and is particularly interested in spiders and moths. He currently lives in Littleton with his family and is working on a book about adventure travel.

Looking for a way to pump up your resume with out-of-class

experience? Interested in some studio time and arts career

exploration? Then this is the workshop for you!

Each 4-class session is designed to dovetail with art exhibitions at the Loveland

Museum/Gallery and Artworks Loveland. Students will have a lot of studio time and

will also have gallery visits, tours, career exploration, and art critiques. Students will

also get a chance to network with artists, curators, and Front Range Community

College (FRCC) faculty with the intention of creating a community network of arts

professionals with whom students can begin to build a career foundation.

Classes are held at the Museum and taught by FRCC faculty. The class will take some

walking trips to ArtWorks Loveland on select days. FRCC’s Department of Creative Arts

Design and Humanities will be presented to students as an option for continuing their

education in the arts as they move toward their college experiences.

This program is a collaborative project of Front Range Community College: Community Studio

Project, Front Range Community College’s Department of Creative Arts Design and Humanities,

ArtWorks Loveland, and the Loveland Museum/Gallery.

19Loveland Museum Art Classes

CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF PUBLIC ARTHOW IT ALL BEGANOver the years, Loveland has developed a reputation as an active and engaged arts community. This is due to the combined efforts of private organizations, philanthropists, city government, and local artists.

It all began in 1984 when Loveland sculptors and community leaders joined forces to host a sculpture show that showcased the work of local artists, promoted local foundries, and generated funds for a sculpture park. The Loveland High Plains Arts Council was formed, and the inaugural Sculpture in the Park show was a success.

In 1985, a Founder’s Group donated the funds needed to begin the development of the sculpture park on land that was previously given to the city by the Benson family. Warrior/Wind Song by George Walbye and A Friend Indeed by Dan Ostermiller were purchased and installed.

In addition in 1985, Loveland became the first city in Colorado to enact an “Art in Public Places” (AIPP) ordinance which earmarks 1% of all major capital budgets for the purchase of art for the city.

GOING FORWARDIn 2015, four new sculptures were added to Benson Park bringing the current total number of pieces in the Public Art collection to 465. The 2015 additions include: Pretty in Chinks by Cammie Lundeen, Happy Dance by Richard Pankratz, Old Friends by George Lundeen, and Panther Pride by Rosetta.

Keep watching as new projects are currently being planned in 2016 for the Wilson Avenue bridge and at the soon-to -be remodeled Fire Administration Building on 5th Street.

After winning the Great American Comedy Festival in 2009, Sam’s energetic, comically-insightful act launched him into national attention. His act is 100% profanity free, and he has shared the stage with Frank Caliendo, Joe Piscopo, Kevin Nealon, and seven-time Grammy Award winner Al Jarreau.

Chris Voth is an accomplished comedian, a licensed teacher, and a published author who made his late night debut on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. He appeared in three seasons of NBC’s Last Comic Standing, was chosen for the Great American Comedy Festival, and was featured in his own half-hour special on Altitude Sports Cable. Chris won the Denver Comedy Works Competition and has worked with everyone from Dave Chappelle to Larry the Cable Guy.
