South Region High School #12 is a comprehensive high school programmed to serve 2,025 students on a 15.9 acre site in Los Angeles. In addition to the program and educational requirements established for the project, the school district was looking for a design solution that capitalized on the opportunities afforded by a 2,025 student program, such as a level 4 athletics program, while offering some of the advantages of an intimate-scale learning environment. The program provides 75 classrooms, divided into four small learning communities, as well as a library, gymnasium and multipurpose room. Administration is provided both at a central administration building and in each of the small learning communities.
Design of the campus revolves around the concept of small learning communities connected to a shared quadrangle. The small learning communities function as smaller sub-schools, fostering small group interaction, and capitalizing on the benefits of an intimate learning community. The small learning communities open up to the shared quad, maintaining connection to the greater school community. The quad provides connection to the resources of the full campus, providing access to the multipurpose room, gymnasium, and food service facilities.
