Parent Newsletter
Dear Parents:
Spring is here as we put the final touches on the 2016-17 school year. Please note
the upcoming Parent-Teacher Conferences schedule for Tuesday, March 14 and
Wednesday, March 15 from 5:00 – 8:15 pm. Meet and greet will take place from
5:00-5:30 pm, with the opportunity for short, private conversations beginning at
5:30 pm. Parent-teacher conferences provide an opportunity for you to connect
with your student’s instructors for a few minutes for the purpose of monitoring pro-
gress. We do understand that schedules do not always provide the flexibility to
attend and we encourage you to utilize Skyward, or do not hesitate to call or
email any teacher at any time.
Please note that there is no school for students on Friday, March 10 and 17
followed by Spring Break running through March 20-24.
In addition to spring sports it also marks the beginning of the state assessment
season. All sophomores will be taking the mathematics and reading assessments,
while juniors will be taking the science and social studies state assessments
throughout the next eight weeks. With a concentrated effort, our students
generally experience great success on each of the assessments. We expect the
same successful results again this year.
Senior parents please check the dates on the senior timeline located in the news-
letter. Senior appreciation day is scheduled for April 28.
Family Firebird PTO is meeting on March 27, at 6:00 pm in the Black Box at Free
State. This is a great opportunity to learn more about Free State.
Again, we would like to thank you for the continued support for Free State High
School.
Sincerely,
Myron Graber
Principal, Lawrence Free State High School

SCHOLARS BOWL
STATE CHAMPIONS!!!!
Congratulations to the following members
of the Scholars Bowl team for being crowned
State Champions on February 11, in Derby:
Parker Guyot, Abena Peasah, Meredith Shaheed,
Janet Stefanov, Jaja Wang, and Lane Weis.
The team was coached by Oather Strawderman,
Science Department Chairman and AP Physics teacher.
The FSHS boys, fed off of each other’s energy. Senior Zach Lockwood
bowled a career-best 680 series, opening his final two games with at least
six straight strikes. His previous season-high was 576. After each strike, he
would walk back to his team’s table, flash a smile and slap hands with his
giddy teammates. “I think the highest strike streak I’ve gotten before was
four, maybe,” said Lockwood, who placed third individually. “I don’t
know how to describe it. It was just awesome.” One lane over from Lock-
wood was senior Cam Edgecomb, who bowled a season-best 607 series.
Senior Cameron Edens placed fifth with a 649 series and senior Alex
Jimenez took eighth with a 640. The Firebirds were second in the team
standings following their three-game series, but edged Olathe East by
posting the best Baker score. “I just wouldn’t look at my score,”
Edgecomb said. “I would just look straight down after I threw a strike and
I’d walk over to the table. It would just help me a lot.” Lawrence’s boys bowling team was eighth, moving up with a strong
Baker series. Junior Hunter Krom had the team's top three-game series with a 568.

Alex Craig, Zach Lockwood, Alex Jiminez,

JAG-K
Jobs for America’s Graduates
Jobs for America's Graduates-Kansas (JAG-K) students
from Lawrence High and Free State High were in Topeka
last Wednesday for "JAG-K Day at the Capitol," sponsored
by Amerigroup Kansas. In addition to tours of the beautiful
Capitol, students were recognized in both the State
Senate and State House of Representatives. Governor
Sam Brownback joined the group for lunch and spoke
with them for approximately 15 minutes. They also heard
from Secretary of the Department for Children and Families Phyllis Gilmore and Laura Hopkins, President of Ameri-
group Kansas. The Governor encouraged the students to keep pursuing their dreams and aspirations because
they could positively impact others by reaching their own destiny. Brownback brought the national JAG program
to Kansas in 2013 after learning about it at a Governors Conference. He serves with 10 other governors on the
National JAG Board.
JAG students: Jerrica Smith (FSHS), Tamara Soukhot (LHS),
Hudson Enyart (FSHS), Tyrese Logan (FSHS) and Zachary Lennard
(LHS).
