NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTS 63 NEW MEMBERS
The Lawrence High School chapter of the National Honor Society held its annual Induc-tion Ceremony on Monday, November 19th, in the Perform-ing Arts Center. Sixty-three new inductees – twenty-nine seniors and thirty-four juniors – joined the twenty-five current mem-bers from the Class of 2019, to being the total membership to eighty-eight. All members re-ceived Certificates of Member-ship, and seniors received gold stoles which they will wear at graduation. The National Honor Society is the nation's premier organization established to rec-ognize outstanding high school students. NHS serves to recog-nize those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, lead-ership, service, and character. Election recognizes a student’s
accomplishments, and chal-lenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and communi-ty service. New inductees were selected by the HS Faculty Committee, in consultation with principals, after a comprehen-sive application process. In accordance with Lawrence High School tradition, the induction ceremony was con-ducted by the elected members of the NHS Student Governing Board: Alisa Colon, Glendimar Delacruz, Chabeli Garcia, Ly-nette Guerrero, and Angel Me-jia. The Board chose to invite LHS Superintendent Ms. Cyn-thia Paris as a guest speaker, asked Jennifer Capellan to pro-vide Spanish translation, and Gabriella Liriano to perform the National Anthem, after the LHS Junior RTOC Color Guard pre-
sented the flag. In her address to the inductees, Ms. Paris challenged the NHS members to seek our experiences in cul-tural spaces unfamiliar to them, to help them grow and learn to negotiate the world. The NHS Faculty Committee includes Kaitlin Dinet, Emily Manning, Jenny Blatchford, and Allen Scheier, assisted this year by Mery Lizardo and Es-ther Peralta. Richard Gorham is the faculty advisor. LANCER LEADERS DAYA day of leadership, preparing for action
Plans are under-way for “Lancer Leaders Day” to be held on Mar-tin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday January 21st; a day of speakers, workshops, and inspiration de-signed to help LHS students ex-plore leadership and civic engage-ment, in response to Dr. King’s urgent question: What are you do-ing for others? All are welcome to participate. A stu-dent committee of 27 has been formed to develop content for the event. The key-note speaker is LHS alumna Ana Victoria Morales, a political and social activist. ADAMS SCHOLARS
The John and Abigail Ad-ams Scholarship provides a tuition waiver for up to eight semesters of undergraduate education at a Massachusetts state college or university. Students must score at the Advanced performance lev-el on one of the three high
school state assessment tests in ELA, Mathematics, or STE (Biology, Chemistry, Introduc-tory Physics, or Technology/Engineering); and score at the Proficient level or higher on the remaining two high school state assessment tests; and have combined scores from
the three tests that place them in the top 25 percent of stu-dents in the graduating class in their district.This year, 184 Lawrence High School seniors qualified for the earned Adams Scholarship!

HOLIDAY ARTS EVENTSIt was a busy December for holiday arts events! The LHS Dance Company held their “Dance Hall Halls” performance on December 6th. The Upper School Holiday Music concert took place on December 13th, and the Lower School Music Con-cert, “Stronger Together,” put the audience in the spirit of the season on December 20th.

KEEP THE ANIMALS WARM
LIFE student Mahhailya Charles coordinated a "Keep the Animals Warm" towel and blanket drive for the Lowell Humane Society. LIFE students in the work based learn-ing component volunteer every Monday at the So-ciety by keeping cages clean, sanitizing feeding bowls and socializing with the shelter animals.
ENLACE STORYTELLERS CAFEENLACE held their fourth annual Storytellers Café event for students and families on Thursday,
December 20th.

ACCREDITATION UPDATE
Lawrence High School continues preparations for the 2019 Accreditation Visit by the New England Association of Schools and College, scheduled for April 7-10, 2019. At the full faculty meeting on November 29, the faculty voted to approve the Self-Study, which came out of the Standards Committees. At the faculty meeting on December 13th, the faculty identified Critical Strengths and proposed solutions to administration. During the NEASC visit in April, a team of 18-24 teachers and administrators from through-out New England will visit LHS for four days, to evaluate LHS’ adherence to the Seven Standards for Accreditation, and how effectively we are living up to our own Core Values and 21st Century Learning Expectations. Ultimately, LHS will receive a final accreditation report, in the fall of 2019, with Commendations and Recommendations. Faculty and students alike have been completing an inventory of our 21st Century Learn-ing Expectations, to help identify where we are living up to our goals and where we need to continue to develop. Over the next few months, faculty will be asked to contribute to a portfolio of student work for the Visiting Committee. We will also put together a Panel Presentation for the visiting team to showcase Lawrence High School, on Sunday, April 7th. A cross-section of faculty members will be invited to be interviewed by the visiting team on that date as well. For more information on the accreditation process, contact Richard Gorham.

Dresses to Dreams is a community service organization designed to empower high school women in the Greater Boston Area. We offer a one-day event
that inspires attendees to reach their full-potential. The event is designed for local junior and senior high school women that otherwise may not be able to afford a prom dress. The day offers the opportunity for free prom apparel,
and continues through a series of workshops focused on goal-setting and self-confidence. In addition, lunch and refreshments are provided. We run
completely on donations, including prom dresses, accessories and food.
The dress is just the beginning...

GIRL’S ENSEMBLE TRAVELS THE STATE
The Lawrence High School Girl’s Ensem-ble Choir had a busy fall, performing at events all over the state. Recent perfor-mances include at the Massachusetts State House on Veteran’s Day, at Law-rence City Hall for the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, and back to the State House for the tree lighting ceremony there. Directed by Nancy McGhee, the choir includes singers Erisleidy Almonte, Aliyah Barbosa, Jerty Cruz, Luissy De-Paula, Marinette Disla, Yzaira Figueroa, Estebanya Gonzalez, Lynette Guerrero, Tehanny Lemma, Heather Luzon, Kiarixa Medina, Natasha Ocasio, Yaislyn Pauli-no, Brandy Pena, Neyshkaliz Plaza, and Nayelly Rodriguez.

Next year we hope to collaborate with the girls and boys pro-grams to make this bigger and better going forward.

LHS OPEN HOUSEOn Wednesday evening, November 14th, LHS hosted an Open House, inviting fam-ilies and community members to visit the school and learn about programs offered on Campus. Athletics, arts, dual enrollment, support programs, JROTC, extra-curricular offerings, and more were promoted. A high-light was the physics experiment exhibitions in Mr. Lynch’s classroom!

The second meeting of the Library Com-mittee took place on
Tuesday December 18, from 3:30-4:30pm. The goal of the Committee is to develop a long-term plan for Library
and Media Services at LHS. If you’d like to be involved, contact me.

by modeling, have your head in a book as they settle in, or come into class, have a sign on your door or outside your classroom that says what you are
reading right now. En-courage independent reading, and when we
come back in 2019, bring students down for
the Resolve to Read New Year’s Resolution, challenge students to read one, two, five, or ten more books this
year than you did last year. Start small, it’s okay if you haven’t
read a book for fun in a while – set a goal, and
reach for it!

LSA DOOR DECORATING CONTEST!The Lower School Academy “Decorate the Door Contest” was created by Ms. Holly Jones’ 10th grade Cohort Cup Ambassadors. Cohort Cup Ambassadors presented a Hol-iday challenge to 9th and 10th graders to see who has the most holiday spirit. Each advisory was tasked with choosing a holiday theme and decorating their door. Not only were the doors incredibly festive, but several entire hallways were transformed into Winter Won-derlands. Students and teachers worked side by side to spread
the holiday cheer last Thurs-day during Advisory/Seminar period. 9th grade winners: 3rd place - Ms. Gutierrez-Rey (Cohort 4); 2nd place - Ms. Hyslip (Cohort 4); 1st place - Mr. O’Connor (Cohort 3). 10th grade winners: 3rd place Warriors (250 pts.), 2nd place Bulldogs (500 pts) and 1st place and remaining in the lead - Huskies, now with 2000pts.

NEW MURAL IN D-101Thanks to Eric Allshouse and his students for the new mural in Room D-101, the new Digital Library. One wall shows the transition from old books that contained all the world’s written information to the use of computers. All these people in the mural, both sections, are real teach-ers or students, repre-senting our school and efforts to improve the educational rigor here at LHS. The other wall highlights the importance of reading. Above it all, a U.F.O. hovers over the old book and is using it’s tractor beam to suck the words right off of the page, poking fun at the future of reading and learning, because no one knows how people may read information in the distant future. The U.F.O. is pulling in the highly important and meaningful quote about education by former slave and civil rights leader Frederick Douglas, “Once you learn to read, you will forever be free”.

ONE GOAL VISITS BRIDGEWATERAbout 70 Upper School juniors enrolled in Year One of the One Goal recently took a trip to Bridgewater State University. Initially, many students had no interest in Bridgewater, however after touring the campus, learn-ing about their rigorous honors program, and the amount of supports offered to students, many added the college to the top of their list. The students got to tour the campus, see class-rooms, dorms, and eat in the dining hall.

Join students all over the U.S. on March 20, 2019, for “PLANT A SEED DAY” The LIFE Garden Pro-gram will be assembling “Seed Starting Kits” so interested seminar classes may join Big-Green.org in planting a seed on the first day of spring. Big Green is a National Non-Profit dedicated to bring-ing healthy food and Learning Gardens to U.S. Schools. Students will be planting seeds donated to our program from: Seed Savers Exchange; Charles Hart Seeds; Johnny’s Seeds; and Burpee Seeds.
The Plant a Seed Kit will include: a plastic grow box; 8 peat pellets; one variety of seeds; and complete instruc-tions. Sem-inars will be asked to mon-itor the seed kits for several weeks in their classroom, un-til seeds have sprouted. Sprout-ed seedlings will be transferred to sunny locations or grow lights once seeds have germi-
nated. In May, seedlings will be planted in our LHS garden or shared with our community.
