• Learning new things is difficult when we are unsettled. This is the same for young people. Be kind to yourself – find a routine that works for your family. It is not necessary to try and replicate what we do here at the school.

• We strongly encourage families to utilise this time for other important life lessons such as cooking, cleaning, gardening etc. We understand that this is a potentially stressful time, therefore, safety and reassurance from adults is essential in maintaining appropriate perspective and balance.

Social Distancing • Social distancing, combined with good

personal hygiene is an effective way to slow the spread of viruses such as COVID-19

• Social distancing helps protect the most vulnerable members of the community and reduces the impact on life-saving health services

• Changes to how people interact have been introduced nation-wide to support social distancing practices. This includes:

* maintaining a safe social distance of 1.5m, as advised by the Government, between yourself and others * avoiding crowds and gatherings

Principals reportWe would like to take this opportunity to thank parents and caregivers for their patience and support at this time of uncertainty. The Henry Lawson High School respects that each family will make the best decision regarding how they keep themselves and others within our community safe. We recognise that a decision to keep your child at home brings a range of challenges. The school is contactable during school hours to answer any questions you may have about home learning.Students have been notified of learning activities via their school email and class online learning platforms. The Henry Lawson High School staff are working with the Department of Education to ensure that students have access to learning. This includes a variety of delivery methods that The Henry Lawson High School employs such as the online platforms ‘Google classrooms’ and ‘Microsoft Teams’. Parents who have a child that is unable to access online learning can contact the school. A learning package will be compiled and posted out.Supporting students to succeed during a time of uncertainty• This is a new way of working for everyone –

students, staff and parents. We will continue to work together to support students.

• How we work together will initially have lots of challenges. This will then settle into a more familiar routine as we all become familiar with this new way of working together.

• Students working towards their RoSA and HSC can be reassured that we are working closely with NESA to ensure that our students are not disadvantaged by this unexpected and significant disruption to learning.

A company called Threadtogether sent the brand new shirts to Bribbaree Public School in support of families struggling through the drought. We thank Bribbarre Public School for passing on the larger shirts to us for our Year 7 boys.

A message to our Year 12 students. In regards to the HSC and your final year of school, I just wanted to touch base to let you all know that myself and my colleagues are thinking about all of you and the situation that you find yourselves in.Through no fault of your own, your final year of school has landed in the middle of a national emergency. This situation will be leaving you with many questions about your HSC. It will also be making you think about all of the potential missed opportunities that go with the final year of school such as leadership, excursions, sport, extra curricular activities, socials and friendships. We will always be hoping that we can turn this around and get you guys back to school ASAP and make up for lost time and finish year 12 the way you deserve. In the meantime, understand that we are doing everything possible to ensure you experience no HSC disadvantage. Our Head Teachers, Mrs Crossley, Mrs Cartwright, Mrs Kuhn and Mr Jones are currently looking at 2020 HSC learning programs and assessment schedules to identify what adjustments will need to be made to ensure all of our students can access the curriculum, demonstrate learning and maximise potential. At this stage, NESA have confirmed that the final HSC examinations scheduled for term 4 will proceed as normal. We will be in touch with this evolving situation.Let me know if you have any questions or concerns. I am available for a chat at any time. I can be contacted at the school on 63431390.Thank you for your understanding during this time. All the best under the trying circumstances and, most importantly, stay home and stay safe.

Mandatory TechnologyThe Year 8 Technology mandatory class are completing a unit on engineered agricultural systems and have been working hard to design and build their wicking gardens. Moxey’s Dairy kindly donated the shuttles and Miss Whale delivered them to the school. Once they had been cut in half, students designed their group’s garden. On Monday Mrs Troth and the students added the final layers of soil and mulch on top of river rock and shade cloth layers. Water inlet pipes and overflow pipes were then inserted. Each group had to incorporate at least one unique element in their design that was innovative and improve the function of their garden. Elements include adding a worm motel, extra cow manure and extra layers of compost.

The end focus of this project is to produce vegetables that can be included in a meal, encouraging healthy eating and to demonstrate to produce food sustainably with less water, while using their imagination to improve current designs.

The Royal Blayney ShowThe show team ventured out, on their first and last outing for semester one, to the new and improved ‘Royal Blayney Show’ on 13 and 14 March. Fifteen students from Years 8 to 12 took part in a workshop day on day one, which involved learning about beef cattle judging, meat sheep judging, fleece judging and how to improve your oral presentations. All students found these workshops very informative and they learned a lot from this day.Following the workshops, students participated in judging competitions for fleece, meat sheep and beef cattle. From 150 competitors, some of our students do extremely well with the following results:Charli O’Byrne – 1st in beef cattle judgingJaxon Stock – 1st in beef cattle judgingOn Saturday the weather turned a little nasty for us with extremely cold winds and rain, however the students pushed through the day.The cattle and students were all presented extremely well, and we received a number of placings and champion ribbons with our 17 head of cattle.Following from the cattle class the students participated in paraders where we saw some outstanding results. Our students competed against 50 students across the region in the juniors category:Charli O’Byrne – 1stMichelle Walker – 3rdJames Hazell also made the final but did not placeOur champions from the intermediates category, who.competed against 50-70 participants:Angus Kelly – 1stTatianna Hazell – 3rdJaxon Stock, Angus Troth and Oscar Schaefer also made the finals but did not place. In the seniors category:Stephanie Davies – 2ndCasey Walker – 3rdIn the finals Angus Kelly rose to the top to take out Grand Champion parader, backing up 2019’s success of the same title.Unfortunately, at Blayney, the students received the news that Sydney Royal Easter Show had been cancelled. The cancellation dampened the spirits of the team, but we will be ready to take out the top titles when the show circuit opens again! We would like to thank the breeders, sponsors and our supporters of The Henry Lawson High School Show Team.
