A recent episode of Who DoYou Think You Are? featuredcomedian Jack Whitehalltracking down his Welshancestor, Thomas JonesPhillips. Phillips, who was hisgreat-great-great-greatgrandfather, was a successfulsolicitor and former Mayor ofNewport. As clerk to the town’smagistrates, however, Phillipssought to subjugate theworking classes and wasinstrumental in the capture ofJohn Frost. Being one of theringleaders of the Chartists’uprising, Frost was condemnedto be hung, drawn andquartered after being foundguilty of high treason. This wasthe last time a prisoner in theUK faced such an extremepunishment, although hissentence was later commutedto penal servitude.
Despite Jack’s horror at hisforebear’s antics, Phillips hadbeen held in high esteem andeven received the freedom of theCity of London. When he died, aplaque was erected inside StWoolos Cathedral tocommemorate his life. Theprogramme closed with Whitehallhunting for the monument: asearch that led to its discovery ona wall near the lavatory. To Jack, the location seemed befitting aman who had endeavoured toflush workers’ rights down thetoilet. But I was left with oneburning question: just who theheck was St Woolos? Obviously, Iwas familiar with the name but Iremained ignorant about the man.The time had come to makeamends.
The name, Woolos, is apparentlyan anglicised version of
Gwynllyw, although for the life ofme, I cannot conceive of how theone gave rise to the other. Bornaround 450 AD, his name stillsurvives in places like Pillgwenlly. He was a formidable chieftainruling the area betwixt the Usk
and Rhymney and he wasrenowned for attacking ships inthe Bristol Channel and for raidingnearby territories. In one suchskirmish, he captured Gwladys, the daughter of King Brychan ofBrycheiniog, who had objected toa union between the two. Somestories claim that the battle wasstopped only when King Arthurand Sir Bedevere intervened.Gwynllyw and Gwladys, the fifthcentury’s answer to Posh and
Becks, went on to have severalchildren. Among them was a soncalled Cadoc, who later becameSt Cadoc after whom the hospitalin Caerleon is named. Cadocbecame extremely religious andhis pious influence led to hisfather’s conversion to Christianity.Gwynllyw went on to experiencea vision of a white ox with a blackspot on its forehead. When hecame across that same creatureon what is now Stow Hill, heestablished a hermitage at thesite. A statue commemorating theprophetic animal is located nearFriar’s Walk: its sculptor,Sebastien Boyesen, is alsoresponsible for the enormousminers’ memorial at Six Bells.
Following his death, Gwynllyw’shermitage became an importantshrine and a wooden church wasconstructed there. It was rebuilt instone in the 9th century and thereis still evidence of that structure atthe cathedral. Both Gwynllyw andGwladys were subsequentlycanonised and they remain one ofthe few married couples to behonoured in this way. Althoughboth are patron saints ofNewport, St Gwynllyw alsorepresents soldiers. And pirates!
Various miracles have beencredited to St Gwynllyw over theyears. A fountain, which appearedafter he prayed for water, wasbelieved to heal those who drankfrom it. Angels were said to havebeen seen near his tomb and thedefeats of King Harold (of 1066fame) and a marauding Vikingparty were attributed to him afterthey ransacked his church. So thenext time you find yourself by thecathedral, make sure you behaveor suffer the consequences. Youhave been warned...

Ever wondered how we came tokiss underneath the mistletoe, deck the halls withtinsel and wearpaper crownsaround the dinnertable? CRACKERS In 1847, theconfectioners TomSmith startedwrapping sweets ina twist of paper.Over the years, headded newelements, firstinserting a lovemotto into thewrapper, and then –inspired by a crackling fire – a‘crack’ when the wrapping wasbroken. Tom then replaced thesweets with trinkets and wrappedpaper around a cardboard tube. When his sons took over thebusiness, they introduced crowns.
CHRISTMAS CARDS Sending Christmas cards can betime-consuming, but they wereactually invented to save time! In
1843 Sir Henry Colecommissioned an artist tocreate a festive illustrationalongside a Christmas
greeting. He thenprinted 1,000 ofthese cards to sendto friends, thensold the rest tocharity. Today, around 900millionChristmas
cards are sent inBritain every year. In 2001,one of Cole’s 12 survivingoriginal Christmas cards soldat auction for £22,500.
TINSELTinsel wasdesigned to
replicate icicles, and was initiallymade from strips of real silver! However, this became tarnished bysmoke from candles, so lead foilwas used instead. In the 1960s,worries about lead poisoning saw aswitch to plastic materials, whichare still used today.
MISTLETOEPagans believed mistletoe had amystical life force of fertility.Kissing under the mistletoebecame a popular Victorianparlour game: each white berry
represented a kiss, and for eachkiss given a berry was removed,
until none were left and thekissing had to stop.
Christmas Traditions
James Pierpont's 1857 song
Jingle Bells was first called One
Horse Open Sleigh and was
written for Thanksgiving.
We Wish You A Merry
Christmas is one of the oldest
secular Christmas songs,
originating in 16th century
England.
White Christmas by Bing Crosby
is the best selling single of all
time. It’s sold over 50 million
copies.
In Britain, the best-selling festive
single is Band Aid's 1984 track,
Do They Know It's Christmas?,
which sold 3.5million copies.
Wham is next in the same year
with Last Christmas, selling
1.4million.
The Beatles hold the record for
most Christmas number 1
singles, topping the charts in
1963, 65 and 67.
Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen
is the only record to get the UK
Christmas Singles Chart Number
One twice, once in 1975 and
again in 1991. Do They Know It’s
Christmas was number 1 three
times (1984, 1989 and 2004),
but technically it was by different
groups, so doesn’t count.

Whether you choose or need early retirement, having a plan can give your money the bestchance of lasting the distance. Whether lifestylepreferences or circumstances beyond yourcontrol are behind your decision to retire early, you’ll need to make a plan to help yourretirement savings last, while still enjoying yourfavourite comforts in life. But with increasing numbers now working pasttraditional retirement ages, stopping work can seema long way off, especially for younger people. Butthe good news is that the early retirement dreamlives on, according to new research.
ESCAPE THE DAILY GRIND EARLYNearly two thirds (60%) of those stopping work thisyear are doing so before their expected StatePension age or company pension retirement date. The study also found that the average expectedretirement income, inclusive of savings and StatePension, for those retiring early is £18,567,compared to £21,961 for those not retiring early. It appears that those planning to escape the dailygrind early feel the most comfortable when it comesto their financial situation in retirement, with over half(56%) saying they feel financially well prepared, compared with 49% of those working towards theirexpected retirement date. That’s reflected in thenumbers taking professional financial advice – 68%
of early retirees are seeking professional advice, compared with 60% of those working until theirprojected retirement age.
MAKE THE MOST OF FREE TIMEThe average age of those retiring early is 57, andearly retirees will be making the most of their freetime – over a third (37%) plan to take up a newhobby or sport, 27% will start voluntary or charitywork, and nearly a fifth (17%) are planning a long-term holiday or gap year. It’s encouraging to seethat so many of this year’s retirees are in acomfortable enough financial position to enablethem to retire early. People stopping work early arenot planning to put their feet up – they want to keepbusy and active by taking up hobbies, sports andcharity work, and some are even planning a post-work gap year.
IDENTIFY THE BEST COURSE OF ACTIONThese are nice ways to spend your retirement butcan be expensive, and with everyone living longerthan ever before, it is vital to ensure you can fundyour entire retirement. Seeking professional financialadvice can help you identify the best course ofaction to achieve your specific financial retirementgoals at any stage in your working life. The East Midlands is the early retirement capital ofthe UK, with 72% of its retirees retiring early, closelyfollowed by Wales (69%) and Yorkshire and theHumber (67%).
TIME TO UNLOCK AN EARLY RETIREMENT?If you’re thinking about early retirement, it’simportant to understand what this means to youand to have a plan to make it happen. Your planningdoesn’t stop once you commence your earlyretirement – you need to be flexible and be preparedto adjust as you move through your life.

Twmbarlwm devastated – but hey! – every cloud…Twmbarlwm devastated – but hey! – every cloud…
Archaeological Trust to perform the investigation. Lead archaeologist, Richard Hankinson, from CPAT was shown around the site by CTS members for an initial assessment and designed a schedule for the project’s
Preliminary work started early October, so much of it will be complete by the time this article hits the
including magnetometry geo-physics, auger and borehole sampling.
Using the data supplied by those surveys a series of trenches were dug to help uncover
some clues to the origins and nature of some of the features this fascinating area. Results of the surveys and trench work are
all available in the public domain and can be accessed through the Twmbarlwm website.
CTS gathered a list of volunteers who were invited
– nearly 30 people turned up for the meeting at Risca Museum and many more applied via email.
Without volunteers and the support of the community an operation like this would be unviable, we are therefore very grateful to all those who help out.
The end of the dig is not the end of the project, our research into the history of Twmbarlwm goes on and there will be other opportunities to get involved – so please keep visiting our website for news.
At the end of the excavation period there will be an open day on the mountain to show people the work done, there will eventually be a printed report published
Terry C. Evans, Chairman CTS
CTS meet at the car park below Twmbarlwm’s summit for a litter pick and volunteer workday on the last Sunday
of every month to which everyone is invited, it’s not all
around up there. We organise walks and other events up the mountain and at Crosskeys RFC throughout the year
so watch our website and Facebook page for details. www.twmbarlwm.co.uk
Officers from Cadw and the Caerphilly CBC ecologist examine the devastation on Twmbarlwm.Photo: Terry C. Evans
You probably do not need reminding of the terrible
Cymdeithas Twmbarlwm Society, like everyone else, were very concerned about the devastation and
from Cadw around the site.Together with the ecologist from Caerphilly
CBC they were shocked to see the extent of the damage. Although it was a very sad sight, we were able to see that without the cover of the undergrowth, there appeared to be some archaeological features that we and Cadw were not previously aware of.
Not being slow on the uptake CTS saw an opportunity developing. We had already had dealings
permission to stick a spade in a scheduled monument without their say-so.
After all, Twmbarlwm and its supposed hill-fort has had very little serious research done on it and certainly
possible origins, so wouldn’t it be a great idea to try to get some answers.
As it turned out, our friends from Cadw were way ahead of us, and were thinking of ways they could persuade their bosses that a serious archaeological investigation of Twmbarlwm was long overdue and this
good to miss.So a team from CTS worked with Cadw to
explore the possibility of an archaeological dig and after many months of planning and negotiations the Society managed to get the go ahead for an in-depth archaeological investigation of the ancient monument at the summit of Twmbarlwm.
Cadw provided the funding with which CTS engaged the professional services of Clwyd-Powys

It Might Be the End of the Summer but NOW Is A Good Time to Sell Your HouseAs the nights grow longer and the days colder, many homeowners think that they should delay getting their house on the market until next spring. Other owners with properties not yet sold withdraw their house from the market. But are they right? Are they perhaps missing out on the opportunity for their property to shine (and sell) at a time when there is less competition?
To justify the decision for delaying putting our house
on the market, we tell ourselves that we do not want
to be disturbed right now, purchasers might be put off
looking in bad weather and Christmas is coming so
their focus turns to buying presents not houses!
But let’s take a look at a few reasons why sellers should get their house on the market now:
1 Less competition: your house is more visible
to buyers now – beat your competition to the
market!
2 Motivated buyers: buyers looking for property
at this time of year are usually motivated. Maybe
they need to fi nd a new house by January? If so,
they will have a sense of urgency.
3 Bad weather: really? Well, yes. If somebody likes
your house in bad weather, they know that they
will absolutely love it in good weather, so decisions
can be made more swiftly.
4 Strengthen your buying position: sell now and
you will be a much stronger position negotiating
the purchase of another house.
5 A jolly mess: this is the only time of year that
you can get away with a little jolly mess when
selling your house. Buying a home is emotional.
Christmas decorations, a roaring fi re, the smell
of mince pies and festive cheer conjure up happy
memories. Th is can help you to sell.
Allt-Yr-Yn remains very popularWe have buyers waiting for properties here and the
surrounding areas. Do you own a house with three or
more bedrooms? Are you looking to sell? Th ese types
of property are in great demand and selling very quickly

Soon various groups will eachenter a team in our Winter Quiz, when there will be much banterand taunting whilst trying to win

SWAN RESCUE
Never can we remembertransgressing the print deadlinedate as badly as this, but asthis article unfolds it maybecome apparent how it hashappened this way! In terms ofsubject matter, we were spoiledfor choice; it might have beento do with the problems weencounter caused by cats toswathes of our wildlife, horrendous injuries to smallbirds and bats, that’s on theperiphery of our self imposedremit – swans, or, not for thefirst time the problems whichresult from some irresponsibledog owners who refuse toaccept their animals must beon a lead when they aresufficiently close to swans thatan attack is possible. We havehad to deal with examples ofboth of these within the lastmonth, in addition to a veritablespate of cygnets getting intotrouble as they start todisperse. A start point is difficult to define,so for convenience, let’s beginwith a call from Gwent Police at7.47am on 25th September abouta cygnet grounded on thewestbound Heads of the Valleysroad between Ebbw Vale andTredegar, not a good time of dayto be crossing the county at highspeed! Clearly this was the first ofeight cygnets leaving Bryn BachCountry Park. In the event thepolice did pick up the swan andtransport it to Tredegar PoliceStation in their van from where werecovered it. Within the hour, there was a further call fromPorthcawl about a cygnet whichhad landed on the roof of a semi-detached house, had slid off, andhad landed in the garden, mercifully uninjured. Later thesame day, Gary, our man in PortTalbot recovered another one in
roughly the same area. At8.53pm that same evening, afurther call from Gwent Policeadvised us of another cygnet‘down’ in Tredegar towncentre; this was collectedeventually following a hiatusresulting from having been giventhe wrong post code! Don’t knowhow we would manage thesedays, especially in the dark, without satnav, provided ofcourse we are given the correctpost code.
The next day started in much thesame way; a call from the ownerof a property barely half a milefrom Bryn Bach with a cygnet‘down’ in the back garden; sortedin the customary way, relocated. To return a cygnet to its ‘home’ atthis time of year is pointless.Inevitably, either the same thingwill happen again, or it will comeunder attack particularly from theadult male, with, ultimately farmore serious consequences.
In the following days wecontinued to deal with more ofthe same; again three furthervisits to Tredegar, an actual attackby the adults on a cygnet atDuffryn, in Newport and an
exampleof a young bird with a wing defectat Llanrhidian in Gower. In thecase of the last bird, transportation to The SwanSanctuary at Shepperton wasnecessary. We do not expect thisto be the end of ‘dispersion’ forthis year, we know of lots morecygnets still at home! However anunderlying theme every year isthe effect of lost or carelesslydiscarded fishing tackle onwaterfowl. An example of thistook us to Clehonger, a village tothe south west of Hereford, mentioned in the DoomsdayBook. Here we had one of threecygnets with a wodge of line andweights around its tongue andlower beak impeding its ability tofeed freely. Caught, freed andreleased; all in yet another dayswork. Business as usual.

I always knew that the W.I.ladies had it right. For those ofyou wondering what I amwittering about, I am witteringabout Jerusalem, thatwonderfully inspiring hymn thatthe W.I. have always called theirown but now the country hasvoted the best loved hymn. It issung regularly at many W.I.meetings although not at ours,we render a version only at ourAGM and other memorabledates such as our birthday.I couldpossibly haveignored theother ‘epithet’accorded tothe W.I. buttoday it suitsmy purpose tomention jam;not, I might add, probably to myshame, that Ihave ever madeany. However, Iknow plenty ofladies who doand excellent jamit is too. Just namethe flavour!
Why have I thoughtto mention this whenoften it is a source ofamusement to thosewho are somewhatignorant of thekaleidoscope oflearningopportunities that groups offer,it is because this comingSaturday the Gwent Federationof W.I.s is holding its biennialshow. This allows membersfrom the whole of Gwent theopportunity to show theirtalents. There are sections onflowers and plants, cookeryitems, craft sections, photography, preserves, floralart scarecrow making and a co-
operative itemwhich has toinclude fiveitems from theabove list. Thescope of artistryis amazing, what a wealthof talent thatmust bemultipliedacross the
nation.
At Rogerstone Roses our newprogramme is as diverse andinteresting as usual, we beganSeptember with an informalevening talking about holidayexperiences, this was a verypleasant couple of hourscatching up with members afterthe summer break. Thefollowing meeting was apractical session by St John’s
Ambulance, it included a CPRdemonstration and helpful tipson first response do’s anddon’ts.
October begins with a talk onAnti-Slavery, which is verytopical at the moment and ofcourse there have been severallocal incidents of slavery, so thisis not something we candismiss as ‘not in my backyard’. The Great British BakeOff with Jon Jenkins will roundoff October. Just looking atthese few weeks hopefully willshow how diverse a W.I.programme can be, there aresocial events, physical events, informative talks on topicalissues alongside clubs that arerun such as bridge, Mah Jong, choir and craft. Add in theatreand cinema trips, excursionsand dining experiences and ourW.I. rightly claims to be avibrant lively group.
If any of these activities interestyou do come along to one ofour meetings, which are held onthe second and fourth Tuesdayof every month at St Anne’sChurch Hall, High Cross. Themeetings start at 7.30pm butladies arrive from about 7.00pmto enjoy a cup of tea or coffeeand a chat.
