11. Power SourcesThis product should be operated only from the type ofpower source indicated on the marking label. If you arenot sure of the type of power supply to your home, con-sult your product dealer or local power company. For prod-ucts intended to operate from battery power, or othersources, refer to the operating instructions.

12. Power-Cord PolarizationThis product is equipped with a polarized alternating-cur-rent line plug (a plug having one blade wider than theother). This plug will fit into the power outlet only oneway. This is a safety feature. If you are unable to insertthe plug fully into the outlet, try reversing the plug. Ifthe plug should still fail to fit, contact your electrician toreplace your obsolete outlet. Do not defeat the safety pur-pose of the polarized plug.

13. Power-Cord ProtectionPower-supply cords should be routed so that they are notlikely to be walked on or pinched by items placed upon oragainst them, paying particular attention to cords atplugs, convenience receptacles, and the point where theyexit from the product.

14. Outdoor Antenna GroundingIf an outside antenna or cable system is connected to theproduct, be sure the antenna or cable system is groundedto provide protection against voltage surges and built-upstatic charges. Article 810 of the National Electrical Code(U.S.A.), ANSI/ NFPA 70 provides information with regardto proper grounding of the mast and supporting structure,grounding of the lead-in wire to an antenna dischargeunit, size of grounding conductors, location of antenna-discharge unit, connection to grounding electrodes, andrequirements for the grounding electrode.

15. LightningFor added protection for this product (receiver) during alightning storm, or when it is left unattended and unusedfor long periods of time, unplug it from the wall outlet anddisconnect the antenna or cable system. This will preventdamage to the product due to lightning and power-linesurges.

16. Power LinesAn outside antenna system should not be located in thevicinity of overhead power lines or other electric light orpower circuits, or where it can fall into such power lines orcircuits. When installing an outside antenna system,extreme care should be taken to keep from touching suchpower lines or circuits as contact with them might befatal.

17. OverloadingDo not overload wall outlets and extension cords as thiscan result in a risk of fire or electric shock.

18. Object and Liquid EntryNever push objects of any kind into this product through

openings as they may touch dangerous voltage points orshort-out parts that could result in a fire or electric shock.Never spill liquid of any kind on the product.

19. ServicingDo not attempt to service this product yourself as openingor removing covers may expose you to dangerous voltageor other hazards. Refer all servicing to qualified servicepersonnel.

20. Damage Requiring ServiceUnplug this product from the wall outlet and refer servic-ing to qualified service personnel under the following con-ditions:

a. If the power-supply cord or plug is damaged.

b. If liquid has been spilled, or objects have fallen intothe product.

c. If the product has been exposed to rain or water.

d. If the product does not operate normally by followingthe operating instructions. Adjust only those controls thatare covered by the operating instructions as an improperadjustment of other controls may result in damage and willoften require extensive work by a qualified technician torestore the product to its normal operation.

e. If the product has been dropped or the cabinet hasbeen damaged.

f. If the product exhibits a distinct change in perfor-mance.

21. Replacement PartsWhen replacement parts are required, be sure the servicetechnician has used replacement parts specified by themanufacturer or have the same characteristics as the origi-nal part. Unauthorized substitutions may result in fire,electric shock, or other hazards.

22. Safety CheckUpon completion of any service or repairs to this product,ask the service technician to perform safety checks todetermine that the product is in proper operating condi-tion.

There are four jacks on the left front sidebehind the screen on your projection TVthat make connecting Audio/Video deviceslike video games and camcorders very sim-ple.

The jacks are like those found on the backjack connection panel. This means thatmost equipment that connects to thosetypes of jacks on the rear jackpack, may beconnected to the front connection panel.

To use the front jacks as the signal source,select them using Main Source menu asdescribed on page 22. They will be named“Front Video” in the Main Source menu.

Left/Right AudioUsed for stereo soundfrom various types ofequipment.

Video Connects the videosignals from anypiece of equipment.

S-VideoA connection avail-able on some very high-end equipmentthat provides betterpicture quality thanvideo input.

When you select Front Video orFront S-Video, the Front audioinputs are automatically selectedas well.

If you’re connecting a video gamedevice, make sure to change the picture settings with the EZ Videooption in the Video menu (seepage 29).

Mini glossary

A/V CABLES Audio/Video cables. Three cable connector—Right audio (red), Left audio (white), and Video (yellow). A/V cables are used for stereoplayback of videocassettes and for higher quality picture and sound from other A/V devices.

A/V DEVICE Any device that produces video or sound (VCR, DVD, cable box, or television).

For best signal reception, it is recommended to have your Antenna professionally adjusted.

If you receive your RF signalthrough an antenna that is severalyears old and connects with twosmall prongs, you will need to pur-chase a 300 to 75 ohm adapter. Itshould be available from your local electronics dealer.

It recommends using a 75 ohmcable for your antenna connectionsin order to prevent interference.

Locate the output jack on the back ofyour cable box. Connect this to theAntenna jack on the back of your TV.

Or find the composite video and audiojacks on the back of your cable box, andconnect them following the instructionsprovided with your equipment. This can be combined with any otherequipment you may want to hook up.

VCR Connections

Locate the Antenna jack on theback of your TV. Connect this toout jack on the back of your VCR.

Or find the composite video andaudio jacks on the back of yourVCR, and connect them followingthe instructions provided withyour equipment.

You may connect either the com-posite video or the S-Video cablesto your TV. (Do not connect BOTHthe composite and the S- Videocables. In the event that you con-nect both composite and the S-Video cables, only the S-Video willwork.)

To hear stereo sound from cable or your VCR,you will need to connect A/V cables as well asthe wire that runs from the VCR to your TV.

If you want to receive your signals on Channel3 or 4, locate the Out to TV jack on your VCR.Connect a cable from the Out to TV jack to theAntenna In jack on the back of your TV.

After connecting external equipment to the TV,don’t display a still picture for a long time onthe screen. Doing so may damage the TVscreen.

Select RGB-DTV Source and press ENTER. Use UP/DOWN arrows toselect the desired options (V-position/H-position/PHASE) and thenuse LEFT/RIGHT arrows to make appropriate adjustments.

This is just a general room design. Any number of setups are possible,and some changes may be neededto maximize your sound. However, aDolby Digital Receiver is required tohear 5.1 channel audio.

A left and right speaker on either side of the set enhances separation.The TV “center mode in,” makes thedialog sound as though it’s comingdirectly from the TV. The rear sur-round sound speakers provide the majority of other sounds, likethose from special effects in movies.Your sub-woofer generates ultra-low frequency sound, for rumbling low-end audio.

Sound is affected by speaker placement, so make sure nothing is infront of the speakers, andthat they are aimed inappropriate directions.

You have the option of turning the internal speakerson or off.

Monitor Out Setup

Your TV has a special signal output capa-bility which allows you to hook up a sec-ond TV or monitor.

Channel Add / Del / Surf Setup

Create two different types of channel lists in memory: “Custom list” and “Surflist”. A custom list can be created by toggling each channel on or off with (Enter).Once a channel is highlighted, you will be able to see whether the channel iscurrently added or deleted by referring to the small window at the top-left cor-ner of the screen. You can create your own Surf list with up to 16 channels. It appears at the bot-tom-left corner of the screen.Press the Surf button on the remote control when a channel is highlighted toadd or delete the channel in the Surf list.



Use the UP/DOWN arrows to selectChannel Add/Del/Surf and then pressENTER or right arrow.

• Front Surround: Increases the front surround sound to create more open and expanded sound. • Internal Speaker: Allows you to toggle the TV internal speakers Stereo, Center or off. If you want to use

• 16:9 - Choose when you want to adjust thepicture horizontally, in a linear proportion tofill the entire screen. (Useful for viewing 4:3formatted DVDs.)

• Horizon - Choose when you want to adjustthe picture in a non-linear proportion, thatis, more enlarged at both sides, to create aspectacular view.

• Zoom1 - Choose when you want to view thepicture without any alteration. However, thetop and bottom portions of the picture willbe cropped.

• Zoom2 - Choose when you want the pictureto be altered, both horizontally extended andvertically cropped. The picture taking ahalfway trade off between alteration andscreen coverage.

Press EXIT to save and return to TV viewing orpress the ENTER button to save and return tothe previous menu.

With RGB-PC, you can select either 4:3 or 16:9aspect ratios.With RGB-DTV (720p, 1080i) and Component 1-2(720p, 1080i), you can select either 4:3, 16:9and Zoom1-2 aspect ratios.

Aspect ratio is changed to 16:9 automaticallywhen receiving 720p and 1080i to componentinput1/2, RGB, and DVI jack.

After connecting external equipment to the TV,don’t display a still picture for a long time onthe screen. Doing so may damage the TV screen.

• Lock On/Off: Activates or disables theblocking scheme you set up previously.

• Set Password: Changes the password byinputting a new password twice.

• Movie (MPPA): Blocks movies accordingto the movie ratings limit, so childrencannot view certain movies. You can setthe ratings limit by blocking out all themovies with the ratings above a specifiedlevel. Keep in mind that the movie ratingslimit only applies to movie shown on TV,not TV programs, such as soap operas.

• TV-PG (Children): Keeps children fromwatching certain TV programs among onlythe programs intended for children,according to the ratings limit. This ratingdoes not apply to other TV programs.Unless you block certain TV programsintended for mature audiences in the TVRating - General menu, your children mayview those programs.

• TV-PG (General): Blocks certain TV pro-grams that you and your family do not want to view, based on the ratings.

• Block Channel: Blocks any channels that you do not want to view or that you do not want your children to watch.

• Aux. Block: Enables you to select a source for blocking among the sourcedevices you have hooked up.

Programming the Remote

Test your remote control.To find out whether your remote control canoperate the component without program-ming, turn on the component such as theVCR and press the corresponding mode but-ton (VCR) on the remote control whilepointing at the component. Test the POWERand CH +/- buttons to see if the componentresponds properly. If not, the remoterequires programming to operate the device.

Turn on the component to be programmed.Then press the corresponding mode buttonon the remote control.

Press the POWER button and the MUTE but-ton simultaneously. Then the remote controlis ready to program the code for the corre-sponding component.

There are two ways to find the right code forthe component.

A. If you press the CH +/- buttons repeat-edly, the code will change one at a time.Press the POWER button after each codechange. If the right code is found, thedevice will turn off.

B. Enter a code number using the numberbuttons on the remote. The right code num-bers for the corresponding component canbe found on the following pages.Again, if the code is correct, the device willturn off.

Press the EXIT button to store the program.

Test the remote control functions to see ifthe component responds properly. If not,repeat from step 2.

Maintenance

1. Here’s a great way to keep the dust off your screen for a while. Wet a soft cloth in a mixture oflukewarm water and a little fabric softener or dish washing detergent. Wring the cloth until it’salmost dry, and then use it to wipe the screen.

2. Make sure the excess water is off the screen, and then let it air-dry before you turn on your TV.

1. Use a soft cloth with a mild soap solution to wipe the cabinet.

2. Rinse the cloth and wipe the cabinet again.

3. Let the cabinet air-dry before turning the TV on.

Use a quality wood cleaner and polish. This will protect the TV from dirt and dust, as well as keepthe cabinet looking new.

If you leave your TV dormant for a long time (such as a vacation), it’s a good idea to unplug thepower cord to protect against possible damage from lightning or power surges. If you use an off-airantenna, you may also want to disconnect it from the back of your TV before leaving.

Early malfunctions can be prevented. Careful and regular cleaning can extend the amount of time you will have your new TV. Be sure to turn the power off and pull out the power cord before you begin any cleaning.

Maintenance continued

Even though you may be getting cable, the signal may be weak, which means the quality of your picture may suffer due to other factors. If there are problems with the image on your TV,consult the Troubleshooting guide on the following pages. You may also want to contact your cableservice provider to determine if the problem is from the cable service.

If you use your TV to play video games or for other uses that have single, fixed images, such as a photo-CD player, you should avoid setting the Brightness level too high. If static images, like network identification patterns, are left on the screen for too long, they canleave a permanent impression on the TV screen. You can reduce the chance of this happening bylimiting the amount of time you use the fixed-image display, and by reducing the contrast andbrightness levels.
