THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE CLUSTERS

CARDIOLOGYThe research in this cluster is driven by the expertise of car-diologists who strive daily for better care for heart patients, both in the hospital and in the home situation.

GYNAECOLOGY/FERTILITYFor years gynaecologists per-form expert functions in the region. Research in this cluster is aimed at the development of better care for (high-risk) pregnant women and people with fertility issues.

INFECTIOUS DISEASESIn this cluster, we focus on im-proving the care for patients with infectious diseases, both with regard to the needs of specific patient populations and from an immunological and genetic approach.

ONCOLOGYIn this cluster we invest in pa-tient-oriented cancer research in which the research questi-ons start from the day-to-day needs of cancer patients and specialists.

ANAESTHESIA/NEUROLOGYThis research starts from the expertise of the clinicians in the field of anaesthesia, neurology, intensive care and emergency medicine.

IN ADDITION THERE ARE A NUMBER OF NEW PROGRAMS IN DEVELOPMENT

A STIMULATING RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT

The LCRP therefore invests in 3 technology and service platforms that support the researchers optimally: the University Biobank Limburg (UBiLim), the Mobile Health Unit (MHU) and RELAB.

UNIVERSITY BIOBANK LIMBURG (UBILIM)The LCRP partners set up the University Bio-bank Limburg (UBiLim) in 2009 to support the translational research carried out by all part-ners. However, UBiLim is also open to resear-chers from other hospitals or research institu-tions.

The goal of UBiLim is to collect, process and store high-quality body material and associa-ted data; and to make the stored body material available for a wide group of clinically relevant studies. For this UBiLim applies the highest standards with regard to biobanks. In addition,

UBiLim also provides advice on sample collec-tion, processing, storage and other tips for ob-taining optimal scientific results.

UBiLim is also a member of various (inter)na-tional biobank organizations such as BBMRI.be (Biobanking and Biomolecular Recourses Rese-arch Infrastructure of Belgium), ISBER (Interna-tional Society for Biological and Environmental Repositories) and ESBB (European, Middle Eas-tern and African Society for Biobanking).

MOBILE HEALTH UNIT (MHU)The Mobile Health Unit (HMU) is a centre of ex-cellence for mobile health applications that was established in 2012 as part of the LCRP. The focus is on multidisciplinary academic research on the use of innovative digital technology in healthcare. For this, the MHU combines forces of clinical, academic and industrial partners, bringing together the relevant mHeath experti-se (medicine, ICT, technology, mobility, econo-my, ...) in one strong platform.

Together with the partner hospitals ZOL and Jessa, the MHU supports industrial players and start-ups in the development of high-tech por-table sensors and mobile applications through, among other things, testing and validation in a clinical testing ground. New research insights are brought to the patient by participating in the clinical implementation of innovation services. A good example is the FibriCheck application for the detection of cardiac arrhythmias, the first spin-off of the MHU.

Strong efforts are being made to bring together various parties involved in ‘mobile health’ (com-munity formation) such as healthcare professi-onals, patient associations, industrial partners, research institutes, government institutions and health insurers, for the exchange of experience, knowledge and ideas.

RELABA lot of complex pain- or functioning problems are caused by - less visible - underlying pro-blems of the musculoskeletal or neurological system. When you can explain the underlying problems, you can develop a treatment that is more targeted and effective. Researchers and medical doctors from the platform on rehabili-tation and assistive technology (Relab) measu-re and analyse these complex movement pro-blems in an advanced way.

With their scientific expertise, Relab already supports medical doctors at both partner hos-pitals today, but the platform is also accessible to patients and other healthcare providers. In addition, Relab also offers personalized advice and further training to companies that develop innovative rehabilitation and assistive techno-logy. Relab offers scientific insights in the va-lorisation of products. Furthermore, Relab can also conduct clinical studies for companies that want to test their developments on patients.

LET’S COLLABORATE!

Knowledge multiplies when shared and united forces can do more. We are absolutely convinced of this strategy at the LCRP.

Are you conducting research with complementary expertise? Are you a company that invests in new medical developments or an organization that would like to work with us to create better healthcare? Contact us and discover the opportunities of a partnership.

Five good reasons to work with us:

1. RESEARCH EXPERTISEIn recent years, the LCRP has developed a solid research expertise around the medical clusters: anaesthesia / neuro-logy, cardiology, gynaecology / fertility, infectious diseases / immunity and oncology. We also have a strong reputation in the field of mobile health and assistive technology and rehabilitation.

Our medical doctors - pro-fessors offer strong clinical expertise. The academic re-searchers from different dis-ciplines have a rich biomedical knowledge and technological know-how.

2. A TEST GARDENMedical innovations are ac-companied by clinical test programs. Do you need help setting up such a program? Or are you still looking for test subjects for your research? The LCRP offers you access to a large testing ground for patients.

3. CO-CREATION AND VALIDATION OF MHEALTH

APPLICATIONSDo you want to develop an innovative mHealth product or service? Then the Mobi-le Health Unit is the perfect sparring partner. They co-cre-ate, validate and support you, among other things, in the complex process of CE and FDA approvals.
