Create your own home on the range

DOWN on the prairie, something is stirring.A new style is comingour way faster thanyou can say “Yee-ha!”

Banish that celluloid vision oftumbleweed, bunk beds and bareboard ranch houses – traditionalhome to the tough Wild West cowboy. This is a liveable look for today thatembraces the softer side of rustic, with bleached wood and colour inwoven blankets, Navajo rugs andreclaimed treasures.

“It’s a style that says ‘home’wherever you are,” says author FifiO’Neill, who celebrates it in her ownhouse with folksy charm and analmost tangible welcomingatmosphere.

All the rooms in her converted1920s barn, with its open rafters andraw wood walls, are decorated in asubtle dove grey and chalk whitepalette.

Loosely woven linen curtains hangat the windows, filtering the brightsunlight, and it’s the reclaimedfurniture and intriguing personaltouches collected over the years thatare allowed to star.

There’s no hall, and the spacesflow seamlessly into one another.Everywhere, there are examples ofher creativity, from a fake plank floor– plywood given a distressed paintfinish – to a carved mantel as a focalpoint with a grate filled with artfullyarranged foliage and branches.

It’s a winning decor effect forthose who are on a budget (and thesedays, who isn’t!) and attracted so

many fans that O’Neill has distilledthe essence into a new book,Romantic Prairie Style.

Although French-born, 20 yearsago she fell in love with the vastplains and sweeping grasslands ofCanada and America, where manyEuropean immigrants originallycreated humble dwellings which, depending on their location, tookon a variety of designs fromranches and cabins to cottages andfarmhouses.

“Those homes all share commoncharacteristics, among them a loveand respect for traditions andhonest materials, a need fortranquility and simplicity and aspontaneity of design, be it rustic, refined or understated chic,” shesays.

“What’s so liberating and

appealing is that prairie-styledecorating doesn’t answer to a set ofrules but spells freedom andcreativity – the only essentials areconjuring a personal sense ofcomfort and beauty.

“What could be easier?”Settler-style resourcefulness and

necessity work hand-in-hand inO’Neill’s world.

She said: “My own taste leanstoward a refined rusticity, a lookeasily accomplished with pre-lovedpieces, whisper-soft colours, romantic accents, eloquent objectsand a ‘do it yourself ’ attitude.”

Quaint shutters are made fromthe doors of an old armoire, pillowcases are hand-made from vintagefabrics and outdoor metal furnitureis given a gleaming finish withmetal paint, making it elegant

enough for a bedroom: “Peaceful, uncomplicated and comforting, thisbarn is my prairie escape, mysimpler life,” says O’Neill.

“I’m surrounded by treasures I’verescued from markets andsecond-hand shops.

“If you surround yourself with thethings you love, you can’t help buthave a home in which you feelcontent.”

With O’Neill’s help, it’s easy tocreate your own little house on theprairie.

RUSTIC PRAIRIEThis is a down-on-the-farm look, adaptable and versatile, which makesan easy marriage with an existingrustic scheme.

“You don’t have to opt for a barelook,” says O’Neill. “Just don’t

over-clutter, andkeep the palettesubdued. I like toplay with texturesand then addcolour inaccessories.”

Emulate a chicpairing of vintageand industrial byfeaturing stoutwooden furniture, hessian and linenfabrics that allowgrain and texture tostar and utilityaccessories such asfarming tools orcraftsmen’simplements.

“Of course, objects must be prac-tical and functional, but a crystalchandelier suits the glamour puss in

me. My friends always laugh at thefact that even when I build, paint ordrill I always do it in high heels!”

White-painted wrought ironbedsteads, dressers and antiquechandeliers can be combined to givea more flirty, feminine feel, but keepthe look simple and grounded withstripped floors, and textured, plastered walls or homely wood-panelled ones and fabrics such asdenim and gingham.
