Course Description: 1 Credit Hour. Required of all second-year cadets, this course focuses on

The Citadel core values of honor, duty, and respect as those values constitute principled leadership.

The course also assists cadets in the process of transitioning from the freshman year to the sophomore year and enables them to reflect upon their experiences of The Citadel’s fourth-class system as they learn more about effective, ethical leadership. In addition, the course includes a

focus on service as a component of principled leadership through a service learning experience. This course is a graded, one-hour course. A student must have permission of the Associate Provost

to withdraw from LDRS 201.

Primary Course Objective - by completing this course students will:

Develop an understanding of how The Citadel core values of honor, duty, and respect constitute principled leadership.

Additional objectives are to:

1. Develop an understanding of the issues involved in transitioning from a freshman to a

sophomore at The Citadel.

2. Evaluate first-year experiences using the basics of principled leadership and The Citadel

core values. 3. Reflect on the various leadership styles they have observed.

4. Develop an understanding of the role of service in principled leadership. 5. Develop an understanding of the role of core values in leader effectiveness.

Grading:

Graded Assignment Descriptions:

Daily Work (40%): For each class meeting from lesson 2 through 10, each student will write a brief response to a question that the instructor has posed. The instructor will keep a record of each student’s responses to these questions. At the end of the semester, the

instructor will record a grade for each student’s daily work. Students who have produced at least eight satisfactory responses will receive an A for this assignment. At least six

satisfactory responses will earn a B; five satisfactory responses will be a C; four will be a

D, and fewer than four will be an F.

Mid-Term Essay (30%): Students will write and submit a 3-5 page essay in response to

the assigned prompt on p. 52 of the 2015 LDRS 201 booklet. The essays will be scored on Taskstream according to the rubric given on p. 53 of the 201 booklet. Papers that earn at least 14 points on the rubric will receive an A; those earning at least 11 points will receive

a B; those earning at least 8 points will receive a C; those earning at least 5 points will receive a D; and those earning fewer than 5 points will receive an F.

Final Essay (30%): Students will write and submit a 3-5 page essay in response to the assigned prompt on p. 77 of the 2015 LDRS 201 booklet. The essays will be scored on

Taskstream according to the rubric printed on p. 78 of the booklet. There will be two other rubric items scored beyond those recorded on Taskstream. (Your instructor will supply

you with these items in advance of the due date for this assignment.) The four rubric items provide a total of 16 possible points. Papers that earn at least 14 points will receive an A;

In order to be able to receive a passing grade in this class, the student must submit both essays to his

or her eLeadership portfolio. No essay will be graded unless it has first been submitted to turnitin.com and received a green

originality report. At the end of the Fall Semester all students will receive a grade for LDRS 201. LDRS 211, The Service Learning Lab is graded independently of LDRS 201.

Course Methods, Requirements & Policies:

Instructional Methods: This course depends upon the frequent input and interaction of all students, as well as the instructor as they engage in the learning process predominantly guided by

seminar discussion. Students will also engage in exercises and view video clips applicable to principled leadership and the core values of honor, duty, and respect.

LDRS 211 Service Lab: Completion of a service learning commitment in the community with a grade of “pass” is required in conjunction with LDRS 201 in order to receive full graduation credit

for the Sophomore Seminar in Leadership. The objective of the Service Lab is to provide you with an enriching and provocative experience by giving you a taste of life and service outside of The Citadel gates. Your Service Lab for this component will be selected from a variety of options

developed especially for LDRS 211. In LDRS 201 you will receive an orientation to the Service Lab options and the steps required to select, enroll in, train for, complete, and evaluate your service

learning experience.

Academic Integrity: Unless otherwise specified, all coursework must be accomplished on an

individual basis without assistance from any other person except the student’s assigned instructor. The Honor System and Code apply to all course activities. Moreover, students will submit their

midterm and final essays to turnitin.com prior to submitting them to their eLeadership portfolios. Only essays that have received a green originality report on turnitin may be submitted on Taskstream.

Attendance: Regular attendance is required of all cadets. In case of absences due to illness or

other circumstances beyond their control, students should notify the instructor as soon as possible. A student who has missed more than 20% of the scheduled meetings may, at the discretion of the instructor, be awarded a grade of “F” for excessive absences, unless there are extenuating

circumstances. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain the information pertaining to any lesson(s) that he or she may have missed.
