Parents: Alter Goldman and RuthAmbrunn were both Jewish and hademigrated from their native Polandto France in the 1930s. They metworking for the French Resistanceand became naturalized Frenchcitizens after the war. The couplemarried in 1949 and Jean-Jacqueswas the third of four children.

Jean-Jacques’parents made suretheir son learned toplay the violin andthen the piano at anearly age. But it wasanother genre ofmusic which wouldinfluence Jean-Jacques early on,when he discoveredAretha Franklin’s soulhit, “Think.” The songwas a veritablerevelation and in 1968he abandonedclassical music andtook up the guitar.

Parents: John Merick Joneswas a soldier in the Allied Armyin Normandy. Wounded, hewas harbored by a family inCaen, and fell in love with thedaughter, Simone Lalleman,who he took to back to hishome in Wales. Michael spentsummer vacations with hisgrandparents in Caen. Onesummer he joined a joinedTravers & Cie, a rhythm bluesmusic group.

For six years he toured with “Travers &Cie.” One day he saw an ad in thenewspaper, a very popular group, TaïPong was looking for a singer/guitarist togo on tour. Michael was among 200 toaudition for the position…and was chosen.Michael replace the lead singer who didnot want to abandon his family to go ontour with the band. The singer Michaelreplaced was Jean-Jacques Goldman.
Carole FREDERICKSAfrican American
Parents: Jazz composer & arranger, HarryFredericks from St. Kitts met a gospel singingschool teacher, Mildred Shields ofBennettsville, SC in Harlem, NY in early 1939.Both shared a love of jazz standards, the bigband sound and the blues. The couple marriedin late 1940. Following the birth of their firstchild in 1941 they moved to Springfield, MA.The Fredericks family thrived in Western Mass.The household was filled with music, potentconversation and people from around the world.Mildred earned a Masters Degree in Educationand became the first Black teacher to integratethe West Springfield School System. Tragedystruck in 1954 when Harry, a constructionworker, was killed in a work-related accident.Carole was just 2 years old and the youngest of5 children.

Singer, background vocalistExposed to a wealth of musical genres as achild, Carole appreciated a wide range ofmusic and singing styles. At age 5, her familydiscovered she possessed a big, rich voice.At first, Carole was uncomfortable with hervoice. When asked to sing in front of her 3rd
grade class, Carole turned her back to theaudience and sang facing the blackboard. Agreat change took place by the time shereached high school in the 1960s. Carolewillingly took to the stage dazzling parents,teachers and students with songs by BessieSmith, Mahalia Jackson, Ella Fitzgerald, SamCooke, Carole King, Aretha Franklin,America, Donovan, The Beatles and more.Finally she had embraced her gift. Carole haddiscovered the power of music to transcenddifferences and make friends.
